It's all about the Chromes right, have some on my '71 Precision and they're brilliant.
Beautiful '64 though! I almost bought a '59 once and bottled it........wish I'd bought it :)

Chromes just do something on a P that's difficult to put your finger on. TI's seemed a bit, well, meh really. La Bella's were ok, but still not quite there.. Chromes just really brought out the sound of a P for me.

YMMV of course ;)

Proper tort is just so SWEET. None of the modern stuff has that deep 3D celluloid loveliness.
Very nice bass, I can just imagine what it smells like.

It smells just like you imagine it would ;)

The case smells like old vinyl and G Plan furniture..

Unless it was Spitfire tort I doubt it would be much like 60s tort. Sorry, I have a bit of a thing about it.

My incoming Spitfire tort Precision pickguard has just touched down at Heathrow, UPS should be delivering any day!
Can't wait, the photos look beautiful.

Oh, that's ok - I like a nice bit of tort too! (Can't you tell!)
You asked for it!
These are the photos Mark from Spitfires taken of it, im hoping it will be delivered to me early next week, it's going to go on my Fiesta red 64 Precision to give me a bit of an alternative the the original mint, I shall keep swapping them over when I get bored! I shall start my own thread when it arrives and stop hijacking this one!

Ohh... my God, that is fantastic, even by Mark's standards. It looks exactly like a genuine 60s tort guard. It's even got the thin black pinstripe layer!! I could lose myself in that all day long! Nice work! :gas:

Oh no... what would that look like on my fiesta red Road Worn P?? by which I mean, oh no, Spitfire GAS!! Bad!!

You're right, we need another thread for all this! Nice big hi-res pics of it on your bass when poss, please!

Thread hijack alert.... can someone please tell me why some of the early Fender basses get checking on the finish whereas others don't?
Just before anyone else does answer - this one does have checking on it - you can't see it in the photos but it does. It's so fine that it's really hard to get the camera to pick it up.

But it's there tho..

Cheers, reason I ask is my dad has a '73 Precision bought from new & its finish is checked to an inch of its life & the paint is also worn off big style! Yours looks like a new bass in comparison. Great looking bass by the way.
I've got a 74 P as well and there's nary a check on it. It's Olympic White - maybe it's something to do with the colour?

The 64 is a one owner, and has been mollycoddled (despite the dings) so I suspect it's just had a relatively easy life..?

The pre 68 Fenders have a nitro lacquer top coat whereas the post 68 ones are poly. Nitro is prone to crack, sometimes just lightly but the poly ones often really crack when they do, which is rarer. With both, the differences between instruments is mostly dependent on the environmental conditions that it's lived and been played in.

Best one I ever saw for being uniquely mashed up belonged to a guy who played in a beach band in Hawaii, the band left their equipment on the beach by the stage when they weren’t playing, including his pre CBS bass, looked amazing and wind/sand swept.

I'm pretty certain a lot of nitro checking happens with the environment it is kept in. If you take an instrument out of a very hot house into a cold venue and do this repeatedly without letting the instrument warm up a little, chances are it will start to check.

I have a few nitro instruments and now I understand nitro, I am less worried (although I would still be a little gutted if it were proper damage) if the paint reacts a little. It's almost like 'oh well, it's nitro.....it'll react at some point.'
