Hands down the best voice I've ever heard.

This woman's voice is just so powerful and she has so much control. I thought Gladys Knight and Donny Hathaway had a great voice and i love them, but Jennifer Holliday is just incredible.

Jennifer and Whitney must have bigger lungs than the rest of us. Whitney is so gospel. her power and control in her voice is just amazing.!!!! Makes me smile when i hear voices like this.

For me it's between Otis Redding and Curtis Mayfield.

Although last year I had the very great pleasure of seeing Patrice Quinn sing with Kamasi Washington and she has to be right up there with the very best, from any era.

This takes a while to get going but once the vocal starts properly it's well worth the wait.

Billie Holiday for me. She had a very narrow vocal range but her delivery and feel can make me cry. I am sorry but Whitney Huston's yodeling just makes me cringe. I can admire the skill involved but you are not required to put every vocal chop you know into every song. Less really is more, sometimes one note at the end of a word will do. Apologies but I had to get that off my chest.

I dom't mind a bit of Whitney, but between her and Aretha they definitely inspired the over singing vocal acrobatics thing which ruins a lot of otherwise decent modern songs.

+1 on winey Housedown, awful and very annoying to me. I used to like Kate Bush but she must have been sniffing the Ajax of late as she has completely lost the plot in so many ways. Tracey Chapman takes some beating.........

Mind duly blown.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone do that before.

i agree some the warbling can get a bit too much, i want music to have purpose, we all look at that aspect of music in different ways. . Ok these woman's voices do it in a more roundabout fashion than others. he he. Lalla Hathaway at her best.

Whitney Houston is way too shouty for me. Just belting it out and no subtlety at all. And why is Chaka Khan always screaming?

The best voice IMO belongs to Aaron Neville.

Mike Patton for me. The one trick ponies might be effective but don't score high on my list (from the guy that loves death and thrash metal, hah)
Mike Patton is awesome. No doubt. i love Mr Bungle
I like his music Chris, but i find his voice is as exciting as a wet bag of chips. There is no definition to what he's singing. all our ears are different.

Give Eva Cassidy a listen, and If you have never heard her before be prepared to think "Why is she not a massive name in the music biz?" Its what I thought when my wife first played the Songbird album to me years ago. Sadly she had died before her work was really promoted. RIP.

Hmmm, Eva Cassidy, leaves me cold personally. Just singing a song slowly never improves it to me. If you want goosebumps it would be something like Johnny Cash Hurt for me, an awesome track when NiN did it but taken to another level by Cash.

Bonnie Raitt for me :)

Live, yup, can't disagree.

Next best for me - live - is Peter Cox. I've been seeing Go West live for best part of 30 years and I swear his voice gets better.

My favourite track of theirs, not HD but his voice comes across well.

Of course there are a shed load of singers that I have never seen live but, for me, it is live music that earns the respect so I judge accordingly.
