I'm really enjoying my near immaculate lakland Bob glaub (Indonesian) p5 bass . Running my Z3 a close second so for £600 it was a bargain..

This x2! Although if you don't want to stray too far from the classic Fender shapes I'd steer you in the direction of a Sandberg TM4 - they have an MM pickup in the bridge position for a bit of a change to your typical jazz sound. Can't fault German build quality either. You should be able to get a nice one for under a grand.
