So after a 2 month wait this arrived from California on Monday...

And I am going to bore you with a little bit on how I acquired this bass before I show you the goods!

As probably a lot of you know Fender recently have released a new series of guitars "American Professional" and have been running 92 days of competitions, anyway one day I see the competition for one of the 5 string P basses and decided to leave a comment thinking "I won't win anyway" and "Do people even win these competitions?". Flash forward a couple of days to Friday and I get a notification from fender telling me that I have won the P Bass. And my year was truly made!

A grueling two month wait and my new bass has finally arrived.

On with the pictures before my initial impression

So hear goes with my quick initial review (Disclaimer: In my 12 years of bass playing I have never actually played a P Bass! and for the last 9 years I have been playing an active Yamaha RBX775 so a lot of my initial thoughts about the P will probably be a comparison)

The bass arrived in a nice solid hard case and out of the case the bass came fully set up, the strings were in perfect tuning, bearing in mind this bass has traveled from California to the North of Scotland via German, the string heights where setup prefect for me. The only adjustment I had to make was to raise the bass side of the pickup slightly.

In terms of build quality everything is top notch, the neck is great, frets are perfect, no roughness to the edges, neck joint is solid as well. A solid thumbs up from me.

I have taken the bass to 3 different band practices this week and have been impressed at how well this bass sits in the mix. However, I am still getting used to the smaller scale length of this bass compared to the RBX. And less frets as well.

I have a couple of pub gigs and weddings next month so I will follow up this initial review with a bit of a fuller one once I have had more time with her.

Thanks

  • 3 weeks later...

Thanks guys!

I have been playing this bass non stop since I got her. And what a perfect time for her to arrive as well as I have been busy with 3-4 gigs/shows these past 3 weeks and will be busy right up to the end of the month before having any other time off.

I said I would write up a more detailed review but that will have to wait.

All I can say is that I am very impressed with this bass. It plays perfectly and has a sound that just fits right in with my band. Think I have caught a serious case of the P bass bug as I am now looking at buying another one as a back up.
