Jings its been so long since i've seen that VID and forgot just how good it was.
Brilliant.
Afraid i can't really help with the question tho as i've never really queried it. It just sounded too difficult to copy i didn't even bother.

This one of many great songs that when you know what gear was used on the original you're still no closer to sounding like that yourself.

99% of that bass line is Bakithi Kumalo and the years of playing in too many crappy South African dives.

I doubt he's played that Washburn since his first Paul Simon pay check. I did read that he gave it to his daughter when she expressed an interest in bass.

When you see him play it on the clip it doesn't look as difficult as first thought but he has a really nice technique.
That technique might be harder to copy than the notes.

Yes if you can pull-off the timing and feel you're there :)

This is all great, and thank you all for engaging, but I feel we’re rambling away from the question.

I’m not interested in how to play You Can Call Me Al, great though it is. What I’m asking is what set-up I can use to create that bass sound.

What equipment and what effects and what settings will make that sound?

I think you'd need to be him, it's how he plays.
