HH V-S Amp Query

This might be a bit of a daft question, but I was curious.....
I was at a party at the weekend, where there was a live band, the bass player was using a HH V-S BassAmp, along with a HH 2x10" and 1x15" (I think!)
It sounded great!
What I was wondering was that he had the V-S head, and also a HH Power Amp connected up.....is this a requirement for the head....having a power amp stage.....or did it boost power......or.......!?!

Cheers

The HH V-S ( 'valve sound') amps were 100 watt models. People often used to use a power amp
to boost this - HH did a matching power amp for this purpose, making 200 watts in total.
Back in the 70's / early 80's this was considered overkill!

Back in 1971 H-H also sold a great 2x15 bass cab with a clip-on front panel to protect the speakers.
Best rig I had in the early 70's was a H-H VS 100 Bass amp and TWO S100 slave amps driving a Marshall 1x18 sound bouncer and TWO Hiwatt 4x12 cabs fitted with Goodmans 50 watt 12 ins speakers. Sounded great doing Deep Purple & Sabbeth covers.
I've grown up now and use two Barefaced super Compacts and Mesa Subway D800.

Mate of mine had the 2x15 you mention, great cab although stupid heavy. He used it
with the HH VS bass amp, sounded good and surprisingly loud too.
When I first started playing in bands, HH and Carlsbro were the brands that we
could afford , and easy to get hold of. We had an HH PA system which we thought
was super cool, purchased from the original Music Ground shop in Dunscroft just
outside Doncaster. Bought it on credit, paid the loan back weekly with earnings
from the Northern club circuit. Happy days.

HH apps were very loud although they are fully solid-state beautifully built. Our rated at 100 W into four ohms 80 W into 8 ohms. They will easily outperform many apps rated higher.

Mark Bolan "played" a Vamp 100w valve stack on TV and photos as they looked cool but an HH solid state on stage.
I have a VS Bass Amo and Bassamp 100.

The designs are solid, only constrained by the technology of the time.
