Recommend me some good P/J Pickups

Recommended Posts

Im going to be swapping out the pickups on a cheap no name P/J Bass and will be replacing bridge etc as well. Her is my dilemma , I am after a set of P/J Pickups but dont know where to start , I am after something powerful sounding but with balanced frequency response , balanced is the key word , I am not after anything scooped sounding, I need something that is balanced across the frequencies. Any suggestions

First off +1 for Andy at Wizard. However...

If it's a cheapy bass you may want to consider what you are throwing your dosh at! You'll probably get people contradicting each other with regard to tonal qualities but I think that EMG's will give you a good balance but you need to weigh up how much something like that is going to cost (+bridge) and consider selling your present bass for something with better hardware and electrics. Upgrading is great fun and can be relatively cheap but if you are wanting quality and clarity etc it 'may' be money wasted (unless you keep the bits and put it back to stock when you move on to another bass).

I'm not trying to put you off and I have no idea what your present bass is (you may love the feel and playability etc which can be a huge keepie factor) but remember you can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear.

[quote name='Dodge' post='71555' date='Oct 9 2007, 01:50 PM']For passive pickups, try www.wizardpickups.co.uk - fantastic quality for peanuts. If you fancy going active, sent a pm to gareth here on the boards, he might still have his active Duncan APJ-1 set for sale.

Im thinking of going with Wizard Pickups, Not sure whether to go for the thumpers and 84's or the trad pickups and 64's
