razze06 Posted October 3, 2014 Share Posted October 3, 2014 I also bought a new one recently, to use in my new acoustic/country side initiative My only problem is string buzz in certain positions, espcially first and second of the E and A strings. I tried raising the action raising the bridge, but the buzzing stops only when the action is so high that it becomes very hard to play it - and i'm not fussy. Do I have any alternative to raising the action further and learn to play in an uncomfortable setup? On bass guitar I could tweak the truss rod, but I don't know if that is even an option here. Different string with different tension? Any advice is welcome. Erik Posted October 3, 2014 Share Posted October 3, 2014 Oops, I kind of presumed you had the rosewood fb, my fault. The lacquered one can be planed too but you will end up with a bare wood colored fb. Which you can stain again obviously. Most of the time these buzzes are caused by the fb but on one of my Staggs the springs were not a 100% straight causing buzz too. Maybe that's the case? Erik Posted October 4, 2014 Share Posted October 4, 2014 (edited) Both my old and new model Stagg had a thrussrod. And on both basses this did little more than rattle in it's slot... The neck is just so thick... But it might be different on your bass.By the way, the neck does not have to be removed to see if there is a thrussrod, this can be adjusted by an Allen key in the "peg box". The E string is particularly long, the green bits goes all the way to where I would fret for F... I think it still plays ok, but is there anything I should do about it? [/quote] Staggs really need strings for a 4/4 size DB because the distance from string anchor to bridge is much longer than a 3/4 bass. The only thing you could try is have a custom tail anchor made up to reduce this distance so that you can safely buy 3/4 strings in the future. This is really something that Stagg should change on their design so that it makes it easier for owners to swap strings around... they need telling that we like to play around sometimes Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Erik Posted October 23, 2014 Share Posted October 23, 2014 It does depend on the maker if the string. I have had Presto balance and Evah Pirazzi string on my modified Stagg. This has a higher bridge and an larger neck angle. So the strings even need to be longer on this bass. Both sets of strings were 3/4 size and both cleared the nut (if only just). But the afterlength is pretty long so it is something to watch out for. You could trim the winding off and glue the ends with a drop of superglue to prevent it from coming loose further. [/quote] I did the same £145 on a set of strings, messed the silks up trying them, I was very very grumpy! Took the anchor block off, drilled the holes out deeper leaving about 10mm of wood left from the string ball, unwound a tiny bit of silk from the E string peg end then used a clear nail varnish to tidy up the silks beyond the nut. My model has the push-on metal rests. The bigger one, which rests against the players torso, has a habit of pinging out of its holes. I've seen someone at a BC bass bash who had superior screw-in fittings for the rests. Maybe his was a later model. Has anyone else had a similar problem and found a solution? Erik Posted October 28, 2014 Share Posted October 28, 2014 The new version has the screw in rests. A large improvement in my opinion. On my old Stagg the support constantly came loose too. See picture of my bass. In the past I have asked my local dealer for some replacement parts for my older Stagg EUB and those were easily obtainable and not too expensive. My guess would be that the supports will be available but the screw in sleeves that sit in the body probably not... But might be worth to ask.
