Pocket-size MP3 recorder?

I've been asked to do some quick and easy recording of various singer's vocals. It doesn't have to be studio quality, just a good level, and I think it would be easiest taking the signal straight off the mixing desk. I'm thinking of something like a Roland Edirol R-09 as it's quick, easy and pocket-size portable.

Any thought's / experience?

I use the Edirol R-09. The built-in stereo mic is great for recording a band in a room for example. However, it can be a bit 'hissy' if you're recording say just a single voice, for example spoken word. I'd recommend plugging in a mic for that kind of thing. I think it's great for informal recordings though and highly portable/pocketable and very light.

The Zoom H4 has a few more pro features, like XLR inputs, but i here the pre-amps aren't that great. It's also a bit bigger. There's a review here http://digitalmedia.oreilly.com/pub/a/orei...der.html?page=1

Just followed that link to the H4 review, and it appears there's going to be a smaller, simpler (and cheaper) version coming out - the H2. Interesting!

The new zoom h2 is on my shopping list.

Like a smaller verison H4 but lacking the xlr sockets for using your own mics, and with 3 internal mics.

and a lot cheaper - we've got a H4 at work and it's very nice but the H2 will suit me perfectly - I'll be buying one (and give a review) as soon as they hit the shops - any day now.

Cheers
John

Hey - I'll just add this as I got one in New York when I was there and bought an iPod (my first) as I'd seen someone using a mic on one before and asked if there was anything that was compatible - and there is from Belkin - the TuneTalk™ Stereo Mic for iPod- http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage...oduct_Id=277661 - obviously if you don't have an iPod then this is pointless, but I have one of the 30GB video ones and it works a treat, just stick it in the slot at the bottom and hit record.

The quality is really good - you can transfer the recordings straight into iTunes and the edit them as AIF or MP3 files - and as far as fitting in your pocket, this vertainly does.

Amazon sell them:

Just a thought

Thanks for the replies all. I'm going to have a look at that H2 if it comes out soon. Boss Micro also looks the business. I'm off down Denmark street / Tottenham court road on Friday to see if I can play with them all.
