We saw this on Bassworld I think, it does look imressive in the video but we wondered how level the fret work would be when it is activated, the cost of a refret and issues with action - surely you would have to compromise the fretless action to overcome rattle on the fretted mode?

Certainly a cool idea!

Yep, it was mentioned on BW, the major downside I think was that you could buy a matched fretted and fretless pair for the same cost as one of those.

These are the makers: http://www.mikeyguitar.com/bass.asp

An alternative that looks quite good was to have fret furrows or grooves so you have the accuracy of a fretted instrument, but could slide or trill like a fretless.

Edit: these are the fret grooves:

I'm surprised nobody's brought back the swappable magnetic fingerboard idea from a decade ago or so... that would have been perfect, as you could have different thicknesses of fingerboard for fretted and fretless, thus compensating for the setup change required. I reckon there'd definitely be a market for replacement necks with this feature.

This all reminds me of the "funny fingerboard" ideas that were rife back in the eighties the oddest of all was probably the Bond guitars with their stepped boards, I had the pleasure of setting up a few of those things a few years back and they were quite playable after a period of getting used to them.
