Need help DIYers. I'm building a Poodle Pedal Parts Rat for my friends birthday. Soldered all the parts in today [not switch/led/dc power] but connected it up as in the instructions to check the pcb was working as it should. There is effected sound coming through, but there's major hum - louder than the actual sound. Anything obvious I should be checking tomorrow? I'm thinking it'll be something to do with grounding perhaps? Cheers all

Have you tried it in its metal enclosure? That always makes a surprising amount of difference, especially with dirt effects. Also, are you trying it with a battery or power supply?

Behold, the Ulti-muff!*:

I got sick of using and building muffs that weren't quite right for me, so I set about designing the ultimate muff for my needs, then after checking some schematics realized I was designing a supercollider, so this is basically a tweaked supercollider with an oscillation mode and a noise gate. It's sublime, I will never need another muff. Using 4001's for clipping in the second stage makes a surprisingly big difference. Excuse the messy wiring job, I embrace the ethos of function over form.

*The Ulti-muff name is subject to change on account of it being terrible.

I haven't actually, might try that first. Using a battery. Built a few pedals before and never had issues so hoping this might sort it :D

Well yes, but neater wiring usually means shorter wires, which often means a quieter pedal.
In any case, looks great, sound clips please :D

I've always rated 4001s as clippers. Good work sir.

Aah, but longer wires means it's less frustrating to wire everything to the board and access the component side, to swap out socketed components on the fly, which means there's more happiness and positivity in the world, I'd say it's a fair trade. Sound clips can happen, probably tommorrow though, I'm still fiddling with the clipping caps.

Does anyone here use Fuzzdog/pedalparts.co.uk for stuff? I'm thinking about buying a trem, possibly reverb kit to build into an amp.

I've never built a kit but I've heard good things, I'd have no qualms about buying a kit.

Hi DIYers, I need your help again.

Rat circuit is working all fine, but the LED isn't coming on when pedal engaged. LED works [tested on a multimeter], orientated the right way, resistor is soldered fine and connections at board and switch are working. Legs are touching so nothing shorting out...no idea where to go next! Any ideas? Cheer all

How are you switching in the LED? Are all your grounds connected? Check the switch is working with the multimeter. Also what value resistor are you using? I've put a 470k in by accident before...

Thanks Bob...

It's wired up exactly like the link says... http://pedalparts.co.uk/docs/Rodent-v2.pdf

I've attached a few pics too.

How would I check the switch is working with the meter? It's brand new so I'd hope it isn't faulty

Resistor is a 2.2k. Grounds all look good to me. I could imagine it if the pedal didn't work and the LED didn't, but everything fine except that

Thanks so much for your help :)

Yeah, if you use the LED pad on the board, then the resistor needs to be in the CLR space, otherwise that omission means the led is getting no power (due to the path being broken). You could bridge the CLR with a piece of wire and that's be fine to leave the resistor where it is. Neater to put it on the board though.

You can not use the CLR & LED pad at all, but means you have to connect the long leg of the resistor to your power source another way (with resistor in line obviously), usually straight from the power socket. Short leg obviously always goes to the switch.

Ok. Resistor moved to the board. Turned on and...LED doesn't light up. But!!! It comes on when I touch the LED. maybe a grounding issue?

This build is killing me! It was meant to be an afternoon building it for a friend and it's turning into every weekend being a new disappointment

Looking at that picture, it doesn't looks like you've connected your power and jacks grounds to the board ground. All the ground points need to be connected together. Connect a wire from any of the audio jacks to the centre lug of the switch or the ground pad on the board.

Hi all,

If of interest, just found this place on eBay that actually does some interesting enclosure finishes in the UK:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Aluminium-DieCast-POWDER-COATED-Hammond-STYLE-Enclosure-Stomp-Vape-Box-colours-/251946723905?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&var=&hash=item3aa931ea41

I have a pink 1590a on the way for a build for myself, and to check quality etc.

Enclosure has arrived and is great quality.
The standard 'orange skin' texture that you find on all powder coats, but it's even and without any imperfections. Will definitely be using these guys again!
Will post the finished pedal when built.

Oh it's only a Trooper Boost to put on a mini board for me. I figure pink enclosure, pink knob, pink wiring.
If it goes well, I'll do a little run in October for Breast Cancer awareness :)

That said, I hate working with 1590a, so we'll see how my patience work out haha. Could always up to a 1590B
