1. Thanks for the post so far. Has anybody tried using a Gotoh bridge? Also, do shallers use stock holes?
2.
You never see a custom bass builder fitting a Badass?
No, I haven't. The bridge being a direct replacement isn't an issue, as I am getting the body built to what ever specs I want, I can get them to drill for any type of bridge.
3. I am getting a Warmoth P-Bass, and I was pretty decided on the Badass II bridge based on a couple reviews, but in all honestly I have check out the competition too much/at all. So, I would like to get a couple opinions on what the best bridge is.
4. So after talking to a guy at a guitar shop, I have decided to go with Epoxy instead of filling with wood. He claims it will work just about as well and take a lot less time. So far it has been a bit messy, but I think it is still okay. I have done 6 frets and I am going to let it sit for a while, then I'll sand it down and see how it worked. If it went well I will continue. Here is a pic showing my messy work and my tools (epoxy and a razor)
5. This bass definitely is not worth the trouble I am putting into it, but I am using it as a way to get myself into learning how the instrument works and how to do repairs and such, of which I have no knowledge at all. I think having a cheap-o bass is the perfect thing to get started on. I don't think the cost will be very much - a new nut ($5) a new bridge ($25) and some pickup wire ($35), and some wood to fill the frets ($5-10) is about all I need, so I wont be out that much cash and I think I will learn a lot from the experience. And for the shocks - it isn't the mic, because this doesn't happen with my other bass or any guitar I have used, so it must be the bass isn't properly grounded. How do I do that?
6. Here is my board - it isn't all set up properly, so I will explain the chain below. The only thing you don't see is my BBE Sonic Stomp, which is behind my amp in my effects loop, always on. My chain goes like this Bass > Boss Metal Zone > Boss CE-3 > Diamond Compressor > Diamond Fireburst > Diamond J-Drive > Boss TR-2 > Electro-Harmonix Small Stone > Electro-Harmonix Q-Tron > Diamond Memory Lane > Amp The Metal Zone is almost un-usable with my bass - I use it like crazy with my guitar and I simply left it in my chain because I was too lazy to bend over and take it out for the picture. Then into the chorus, which I am not too terribly impressed with, but until I get something else it will have to do. After that it goes into my Diamond Compressor, which is just awesome. Does exactly what I want it to. The Fireburst is the perfect distortion sound to go with my bass. I bought it for my guitar, and was never too happy with it - it is good, but not really the sound I was after. I just plugged it into my bass a couple weeks ago and was stunned to find that after trying a handful of "bass distortions" that left me unimpressed, this one was exactly what I was looking for. A very nice Jeordie White type sound. I hardly ever use the J-Drive with my bass either. The drive isn't what I am looking for on it, but it also has a button that gives it a volume boost, which I use every now and again. Then it goes through my tremolo and phaser which are both self explanatory. Next up is the Q-Tron. I just bought this a couple weeks ago and have been focusing its attention to my guitar, and it was only recently that I have tried it with my bass. I have heard some great clips online of its use with bass where it sounds outstanding, but I haven't been able to re-create these sounds yet. I think it has to do with my bass having a fairly high output, but we will see. Last for the board, it goes into the Diamond Memory Lane, which is the nicest sounding delay I have ever heard. I highly recommend getting this pedal if you can - at least go to the website and hear some clips. Finally it goes into my MarkBass LMII amp and all is well.
7. So I have this really old Beatle style bass of unknown brand from way back in the day - my aunt used it when she was young - and I just got the okay from her to do with it as I please. She says the bass was never very good, but I hope at one time it was at least a little bit better! It hums like crazy, the electronics were shot, the tuners are busted, the bridge is busted, it gives me shocks if I touch the microphone as I'm playing, and the frets were very poorly done. So, I have taken it upon myself to use this as a project bass. I have 0 experience with this kind of stuff, so it will be an interesting ride. I'm stupid and forgot to take pictures before, but not that I have totally ripped out the wiring and the pickups and completed my first step (ripping out the frets) I decided to take a few so, here are a couple pics. Hopefully in the next couple of days I will finish the neck, then in a month or so I will order some pickup wire and rewind the pickups, find a bridge and set it all up.
8. Thanks for the clips - that helps a lot. I was thinking about putting it into my upcoming bass (a Warmoth built single coil p-bass) but after thought, I have changed my mind. My current bass is an Ibanez SR405, and when I get my new bass I am defretting the Ibanez, and I think I will get this preamp and put it in there.
9. I had a bit of the same problem running my rig (Ibanez SR405 into LittleMark II into their back ported 4x10 cab), then I bought a BBE Sonic Stomp, through it into the effects loop and it instantly fixed the problem. Try to get your hands on one to try it out, as it would probably be the cheapest fix.
10. Rocco Prestia of Tower of Power. Man that guy is funky. Now, Victor Wooten is not underrated because anybody who hears him can't deny how awesome he is, but the name is virtually unknown unless you are a musician.
11.
That looks to be a list of some of the worst looking Gibsons ever made. The reverse V is indeed ugly, but bloody funny!
I agree, with a couple exceptions. Week 16 and week 20s Les Pauls look great (IMHO) and they are very, very nice playing. However, I don't really like the looks of the basses.

Hey
Warmoth? As in the neck/body makers? Lindy Fralin? No, we've never heard of those Welcome aboard BTW.
As I will be posting around here you guys will probably have to forgive my ignorance, as I don't know what makes it over to you guys and what doesn't.
What strings will you be using?
I am not sure yet...I work at a guitar shop (just a small one) so I have a order of D'Addario half wounds coming in with our next string shipment, but I am not sure how I will like them. I have never tried half wounds before, and I have never used D'Addario bass strings, so we will see how it goes. I usually string my Ibanez with a 4 set of GHS Boomers, then use an Elixir for the 5th string.

Hey

Hey guys I signed up the other day after reading a review about the ACG preamp, as I had a question to post, but after reading around a bit I found this is a pretty cool place, I'll probably stick around a while. My name is Micah - I live over in Canada. I have been playing for about 5 years. My bass is an Ibanez SR405 - not the greatest bass, but it has done me well. I am going to start playing in a bar band coming up soon, so I need a new bass, which will be a Warmoth swamp ash P-Bass body (with their 72 style pickguard) with a jazz bass neck (probably ebony on maple, but possible bloodwood on canary wood) and a custom Fralin single coil P-Bass pickup in it. The colour will be spectra blue with a white pickguard, for those interested. I may put in the ACG preamp but I am not sure yet. The rest of my rig is a Markbass LittleMark II amp into their back ported 4x10 cab. I don't use much in the way of effects - just a BBE Sonic Stomp that is always on, then a Diamond Fireburst distortion and a Diamond Memory Lane delay. All the links in this post go to the products, as most of them mentioned are either American or Canadian companies, and I do not expect you all to know of Warmoth or Fralin pickups.
14. Good review, but is there any chance of you making a recording simply holding a note and twiddling with each knob so I could hear exactly what it does? I am getting a bass made for me that will have one single coil P-Bass pickup in it, and I was going to go passive until I heard about this preamp, but for the $400 Canadian I will pay for it, I would like to hear it before I decide. -Micah
