1. Listen to Chris Squire. Either listen to his (only) solo album called Fish Out Of Water, or listen to a Yes album. Listen to one of their 70s albums, especially Relayer. He's one of the most original and entertaining bassists I've ever heard. He'll definately show you something different. Yes had complex arrangements, yet Chris' playing was so free and inspired, like a breath of fresh air. Also, listen to Geddy Lee's basswork from the 80s. He did some really cool stuff there. They were the tightest band ever, with really complex peices, and you would be amazed with his composure and speed. And listen to a band called Starcastle. Wonderful melodies from a player who took a lot of inspiration from Chris Squire.
  2. Hey, all. I just created a blog and there's stuff on there about music, including some albums. I plan to put hard to find stuff on there, and some good bass stuff. As I said, the blog is new, so there's not much on there now. There's one album there, which has no bass! But bookmark/favourite the page and see what turns up later. I'll give descriptions as I put stuff up. I think I'll be putting a Nektar album up next, which will have excellent bass parts, so stay tuned. Here it is: <a href="http://musickians.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">http://musickians.blogspot.com/</a> Enjoy [edit] Just incase anyone is wondering about how I feel with regards to downloading and stuff, my first post in the blog is about that. And I've realised that this is in the wrong forum. It should be in the general talk forum. Anyone care to move it there?
  3. Haha, yeah... the hand gestures which they have when holding their basses are all really different. Perhaps it says something about their personalities. The first is almost afraid to touch his. The second loves to touch his. The third is not bothered about touching his. And the last is very dependant on his.

    ¡Hola!
Hello and Welcome to the website For a first bass you chose a cracker! and you're going to have to put in quite a few hours on the fretboard to get as good as Mr Lee Enjoy! Hamster
Yeah, it'll be a while before I can fly around like him.
welcome mate close to the edge has some wicked basslines on it doesn't it?
Yeah, Close To The Edge has some brilliant bass work. But so does all of those albums. Have you ever heard the album called Relayer? He goes nuts in that one. Also, I highly recommend Chris Squire's only solo album, Fish Out Of Water, from 1975. The bass guitar is basically the lead instrument throughout the album and there's only a little peice of 12 string guitar on one track.
Used to be a huge Yes fan. I froze on hearing Anderson's voice when my dad played me Relayer. Welcome to the forum onslo.
You froze when you heard Jon Anderson's voice? In a good way or bad way? But yeah, I love that man.

    ¡Hola!

Hello. I just signed up. I'm new to bass playing. I just got my first bass a few days ago, which is a Fender Geddy Lee Jazz Bass. It's beautiful and I'm really happy with it. I'm only playing it through an old little guitar amp at the moment, though, but I'm still getting some cool sounds out of it anyway, entirely due to the guitar, of course. I used to play some six string guitar a while back, so I have a little head start with getting around the fret board, but I'm an absolute beginner with plucking. Yet, I'm already improving. I used to be a drummer, so that should help with rythm and understanding how to play with a drummer... maybe. My inspirations are Geddy Lee from Rush, Chris Squire from Yes, Mark Egan, Pete Trewavas from Marillion, Mike Rutherford from Genesis, and many others. I love the unique playing of these guys, plus I like Goth Rock styles, Jazz, Rock, Reggae, and everything that's good, really. My real main inspiration for picking up the bass is probably Geddy Lee above all, with Chris Squire right behind him. But Yes being my favourite band of all time! I think that's everything you need to know right now ;) Hopefully I can pick up some good advice from you guys and some good random talk, too! Peace and love! ~Adam
