I dedicated a lot more time to playing fingerstyle because I believe the technique of slap bass has become redundant in modern day music, and fingerstyle will always be the more prominent style of playing bass with the kind of music I regularly record and perform. Equal importance should be placed on pick playing as well nowadays, as I think for many bass players who work hard on getting their technique down, pick playing is often an afterthought, and it shouldn't be because it accounts for a lot of what goes down on modern recordings. Just my 2p!

Hi Leemarc, welcome to the forum! 2. Which bass amp/cab would you go for and why?
3. So fellow bass players....... Do you think bass players should take lead roles in a band like lead guitarists or should a bass playing stay very much as the support/foundation in a band?
4. Ahh!! See I was okay then....Back to FULL LIFE SIZE IMAGE then....I'm only joking
5. LOL!!!!! Well guys I am VERY proud of my achievements here. Only us bass players can get so caught up on a subject matter like this!! I still get first prize for fanciest signature...! I clearly upset someone though giving me a minus on my reputation! LOL! thank goodness my bass performances arent judged so quickly!
6. 7. From my own personal experience slapping out of context can you you fired off a gig. I have played for bands that want that slap/thump and bass solos but have also played for bands that require just the simplest of bass lines are either one better than the other? No I dont think so really - If I want to continue getting paid its my job to be flexible and play what the music director wants I've been to many gigs where young kids are making a whole load of noise on the bass slapping thing and just show boating....no musicality at all and quite frankly its embarrassing. I appreciate all types of bass playing because I know to play the bass well isnt easy at all. I appreciate what paul mccartney does right through to the likes of victor wooten. I posed the question because it does raise very interesting answers - love reading what others have to say. Didnt think my signature would have been a part of it though LOOOL
8. Whoops!! No disrespect guys....I joined the forum a few days ago signature has been readjusted. I personally think both techniques have their place but I don't understand how some think one is greater than the other
9. It does make me wonder how some bass players think if Im honest. I have had this same chat with other players. Some say you have the John Pattitucci or Jaco style of fingering that would blown anyone away but then others have said people like Victor Wooten, Miller, Larry Graham, Stu Hamm their style are forces to be reckoned with.
10. Thats very funny!!!! Well if your playing thru some kind of 1000 watt amp....I dont "her" would be that quiet...! thanks that made me chuckle!
11. Just a question I thought I throw out there to see what my fellow bass players think "Slapping or Fingering technique" Which style of play do you think requires more discipline?

13. Frustration plus motivation is definitely the key keep to on wanting to practice and learn. If you don't feel frustrated its probably too easy
14. Guys don't you find just going thru scales really boring. Its great for knowledge and note placement but for me having sat as a kid going thru scales and notation I found I learnt a whole lot more from just playing in bands and being forced to learn songs that were out of my comfort zone. I look at scales like watching a school teacher writing on a black board. Its all necessary but is it practical in the real world? Just my personal thoughts
15. Granted sitting at home just practicing scales and modes can be boring but you have to find ways to keep challenging yourself, when I was younger I would buy so much music of all genres and just try and play along to what I could hear, go to loads of gigs and festivals just to watch other people play and get inspired by what they were doing. Now a days its so much easier with the internet. There is literally tons of stuff available to you that can keep you challenged every single day for hours (if you have that kind of time) Don't give up though the bass is an amazing instrument
