1. Sorry forgot to say that the brush on lacquer will lay on the fretboard in much thicker coats than spraying. If you use a car spray it will take ages to get a durable enough coating for playing without wearing it out when playing. The two pack is also extreemely hard after a couple of weeks and having a hardener mixing with the lacquer sets very quickly.
2. May I suggest a two pack soft sand woodfiller,Wurth uk do a good one. If you do decide to laquer it then rustins do a plastic finish which is brush on.(also sold in small amounts). Three or four coats then 1200 grit wet and dry then t cut ( car burnish paste), to get it smooth Use a cork block when sanding so the filler and the finish are flat when sanded. If your filler is too hard then you end up sanding the wood and not the filler, a single pack filler can be used but this will ''sink'' when drying so you will need to fill at least twice. Hope this helps.
3.
I just bought a Westone 1A Thunder and I'm waiting to arrive. I have a Jazz and I wanted to try the precision sound but also a bass with a wider nut. Do you know the nut size of the Westone?
This looks like a nice one, same as my 1a, the nut on my 1a and 1 (passive with ash body) is about 42mm wide but I think you will like the neck, very quick and easy to play. The solid colour westones like yours will have a maple body which is very resonant.Hope you enjoy it.
4. Does anyone else think that westone basses are just such an amazing amount of good bass for the money. I have a thunder 1a and the pick ups and tone variation are amazing for the price that they seem to sell for.
5. sound is fairly subjective in my opinion,I think mine is ok then I hear another player or play someones set up and realise there is always more to find out there. Same with tunes, styles and everything else, the fun is in the looking.
6. My first bass was a budget yamaha and from time to time I still check these out in shops.( amongst many others of course) I find them well set up out of the box so to speak and very playable for a starter bass.I guess it depends on the shop but most basses need some attention after travelling across the world and some of the budget basses are just not given enough to make them playable. You only really appreciate this as you get better as a player and of course thats one reason to want to buy a better bass. A good shop should put the effort into doing the best set up they can even on the cheaper basses so as a starter you have a better chance of getting a lot back from playing and hopefully enjoying yourself more.
7. Hi everyone, just joined the forum. I play double bass and fretless electric. On my string bass I use a headway edb-1 pre amp with a variety of pick ups and this works well for me. I have a couple of string basses both ply. i restored both of these from various states of disrepair, having to remove the top on one of them as it had been standing with the sound post down for a number of years and the tension left in the strings had pushed the top in. Went back together well however and plays fine. Lucky to be playing regularly and really enjoying myself doing so playing jazz and country blues locally. Looking forward to getting into discussions about this very enjoyable pass time. Happy new year everybody.
