1.
Now I just need to find somewhere in the Midlands that has any of the pedals in stock so I can try before I buy.
Peterborough Music has some multi's in (not too far from Leicester either) - I tried them there but didn't like the Boss and went for a Bass POD xtl but like the look of the new Zoom. I also tried out a Korg AX3000B - miles better than the POD for fx and the synths are a lot of fun but I wasn't sure about how well some of the knobs would put up with abuse long-term.
I'd be interested to hear from anybody that has managed to compare 2 or more of these pedals, from both a sound quality and usability perspective bearing in mind I'm going to be using it live
I did a set of comparison vids earlier this year between the Korg and my POD - see this thread: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...hl=korg+AX3000B
2. Got a hideous old C60 of my first band jamming in a church hall in the mid-70's. Awful playing (ALL of us but especially me), awful acoustics and awful recording but it gives my kids hysterics! I'd been playing about 3 days and had absolutely no idea what I was supposed to be doing! Not much has changed then!
3.
I think what I really didn't like about the PodXT (live anyway, which is what I had) were the foot controls, too easy to hit the wrong button and you could only use one button at a time, with stomp boxes you can just stomp anywhere in the general location of the switch and hit it, with the PodXT you've got to be really precise, and screwing up hitting the wrong button can have dire consequences (especially with the iffy volume levels on the PodXT series).
The XTL is about building a patch, saving it and then calling it when you need it, not so much the 'Think I fancy a bit of Chorus now...' approach - but if you want the fx in there and available but not present to start with save the patch with them off and call them when you need them. It is a bit limited in what you can have in the chain though. Starting to GAS about other fx that I don't have - slow attack and pitch shifter in particular. The thing that I find hard about the xtl is when I build what I think is a great patch in my study - which is about 14' square, take it to the hall on Sunday and it sounds completely different! So I have to spend a bit of time playing with it there. Must admit I don't have a problem hitting the wrong footswitch. And personally I quite like the preset 'String Theory' patch (1.D I believe). I think ithe distortion sounds ok with my amp/bass but haven't tweaked it yet. But agree about the fuzz - haven't found one I really like yet. Haven't found a synth setting I even vaguely like on it either. (back in the 80's I built a fuzz circuit from a mag and then installed it into my bass under the scratchplate. Well I thought it sounded cool... at the time!)
4. I emailed Zoom yesterday asking if they were going to be doing a bass version of the G9.2TT - this is the reply I got this morning..... Dear Mr FJ Thank you for your inquiry. Yesterday, we have uploaded the product information of our new bass effects processor "B9.1ut". Please refer to the following web page. http://www.zoom.co.jp/english/news/news217/index.php Sincerely yours, ZOOM Corporation. Maybe a B9.2tt on it's way? But this one looks good.
5. I spoke to him live on the Radio 1 Friday Rock Show many many years ago - back in the 80's - he used (dunno if he still does) Gibson Thunderbird pickups on his main Rick.
6. Found these a couple of days ago - no idea how though. http://www.eastwoodguitars.com/ Not everyone's cuppa, but I like something a bit different and I love retro stuff. I want one of those Rocket basses... And the Airline Map... They have vids of the being played too. Edit: And speaking of Rocket, nostalja and retro - here's the original Rockets and the guys wot used them: http://www.hendrixguitars.com/Va166.htm
7. Mrs FJ would make a superb blues/soul singer but refuses to try out. Really nice mellow voice, tends to sing slightly high but that could be sorted. Hope you get sorted out though.
8.
Crikey, I'd be annoyed if someone stole my bass with a breadknife!
I was just thinking that!!
9. I adore BCRs - have drooled over them for many many years now, and missed getting a Mockingbird cheep a few years back. Sigh.....
10. Also been there. My eldest is 15 this year. 3 years ago it was a keyboard - now gathering dust in her bedroom. 2 years ago it was a guitar. Now gathering dust in the study. On both occasions we bought a reasonable instrument, and said that if she was really keen ands kept it up we'd buy her a better one. Now she says she's bored all ther time and we point out she has more 'stuff' than we ever had, and has 2 instruments to learn either of which would server her well in the future. And we also realised at that point we sounded just like OUR parents! We take the 'play it for fun, play for the sheer enjoyment of playing' route. She sees me picking up my bass all the time, 5 minutes here, 3 minutes there, 2 hours somewhere else simply cos I love it. I'm hoping it'll catch on!
11.
my mrs doesn't mind one, it's all the others that she has a problem with.
Hah! Mine too! If I buy another one I'd have to get rid of one - and I only have 2 (and a Yamaha Pacifica)! Been married 18 years this year - so she doesn't mind it that much really. Just getting fed up all with leads and 2 amps in the study. She used to play guitar years ago afore we met so decided since our eldest isn't using hers any more she'd have a go again. It's a classical and she couldn't get on with the neck - so I suggested she might like to try the Pacifica - and lo and behold she loves it! Looking forward to jammin' in the evenings when she's a bit more advanced!
12. Used them on and off for many years. They last about 10 minutes and break. Got a bent one sitting in front of me - 90p in the market here, same as the Maplins one. OBBM. I didn't theink the Rick-o-sound was the stereo thing though - isn't is an electronics pre-amp sort of jobby? Stereo is just stereo wiring - unless someone with an actual Ricky wot knows these things can put me right....
13.
I also wanna be there when tBBC asks the question!! :-D, am only just outside london with constant jaunts in. Maybe we should mount an 'intervention', all of us just turn up....."you know how you're perceived??" haha Si
Nuts! I was just going to suggest that!
14. I play in the worship band at church (only been at this one 2 years) alternating weekly with another bass player. We're starting to get some of the more modern and challenging (and rocky. And fun...) stuff through that I'm more used to, and we have a lot of fun doing it (lots last night) but I have this nagging in the back of my mind all the time that I'd LOVE to be back in a proper band and play the pub circuit round here. R'n'B for me, given the choice! Haven't been in a band since - oohhh - 1983 I think. But again - wife / kids /work etc... you know the story. I like this thread though, some good comments, like the 'Thirds' concept, and like a couple of others I've massively chilled as I've matured. Like a fine wine I think (my wife says more like a smelly cheese!). And since I won the drum machine in the Bass Bash raffle and played with some of the more unusual tracks my outlook has broadened yet again - and using the auto-wah on the POD XTL there's a very 70's disco sound there... and I HATE disco! (But ... it's so much fun to play!) and there's some other funky stuff developing along the way. My wife has a very mellow (sexy) singing voice and would make a fantastic blues/soul singer (both of which she likes). Now I just need a guitarist or 2 and a drummer and a sax an' a 'harp player... and... and ......
15. My GA140 combo is getting a bit too heavy and doing my back in, so I'm considering seperates. Similar rating - 140w - 200w range, but funding is an issue. I have a Bass POD XTL and can use that for sound shaping if needbe. I have no pre-concieved ideas as to combinations, having had the Ohm for ever. I like a good low bottom end (Ooohh, Matron!) and not a big fan of trebbly highs. Don't do slap (but going t try to learn). I use fingers/pick around 70%/30%. Currently have one 15" driver. Advice and suggestions welcomed. Not 100% sure what I want, and it won't be for several months anyway.
