1. I went to see FORQ recently in Manchester. Fantastic gig and met Kevin afterwards ... he’s a top guy as well as a great musician.
2. They’re still going ... we’ve done gigs with them 😁 There must be at least a dozen Oasis tributes out there though.
3.
What I do with a band that has a back catalogue like The Smiths is to start with their Singles/Best of Compilation and work from there.
+1... Then maybe try The Queen is Dead album ... it's probably the most accessible apart from the the 2nd half of the debut album. The same if you're want to get into Morrissey's solo stuff as well ... Go for the greatest hits then either the Vauxhall and I or Viva Hate albums.
4. I managed to get tickets to see Beck in Manchester in June. I've never seen him live before, so I'm really looking forward to it. 😀
5. I thought there was a bit of a resurgence of prog rock style music with people Steven Wilson doing quite well and bands like Porcupine Tree, Spock's Beard, Pineapple Thief selling out venues?
6. These Smiths are playing this Friday at the River Rooms, Stourbridge. As you can guess from the name we're a Smiths and Morrissey Tribute. Tickets £8 from http://www.theriverrooms.com/thesesmiths.html
7. First ever gig at Bristol Fleece last night. Great venue, even better crowd ... it was sold out which made the atmosphere amazing and we even had a very friendly stage invasion during the encore ... someone kept standing the guitards volume pedal so we ended up finishing the song on bass and drums because he couldn't get anywhere near his pedals! It's probably up there with one of the best nights I've had playing bass! It's a long drive back home to Manchester afterwards though! 😂
8. The tribute band I'm in, the singer put the band together but we've gigged with other bands where the band have auditioned loads of people before they found the right person.
Where does a tribute band get gigs? Considering there already seems to be plenty of them around?
... we got lucky and quickly got picked up by a really good agent and we're getting some great gigs but I don't think it's even easy for the agent sometimes with 2 other Smiths tributes doing gigs nationwide as well. I'd hate to be trying get gigs for ourselves.
9. IMO, unless it's a tribute act, then it's all down to artistic choices ... and as long as both the band and the audience enjoys it, isn't that what really matters? I used to play in an 80s covers band and we'd often spend weeks of rehearsals getting a song as close as we could to the original and the audience wouldn't really notice and then we'd play a punked up version of something like 'Walk Like an Egyptian' ... as far from the original as you could get (even had a male vocalist) and they'd be asking us to play it 2 or 3 times, they liked it that much.
10. I was there last night as well. Fantastic gig!
11. How Soon is Now - The Smiths Message in a Bottle - The Police Killing in the Name - RATM Paranoid Android - Radiohead Le Freak - Chic This Charming Man - The Smiths
12. Steven Wilson - Hand. Cannot. Erase. ... It was just about the only thing I listened to for the month after it was released.
