1.
Are you at UK or Christchurch (I teach occasionally at both, not DB unfortunately however). Christchurch has an extremely good music department so you might find someone there. Re the orchestra, I would just go for it, it might be a better learning curve than lessons anyway?
I'm at UKC. Yeah when I asked for information on it, the people were rude to me :/ Maybe they just had a bad day or something!
 2.
I was promised a call back from a tutor down here about a year ago and it never came! A few of the guys on here have offered to travel down if there is enough interest, but that's likely to be more ad-hoc than regular, and to my mind, teaching needs to be regular. If you're Grade 6/7, you could probably teach me a thing or two though
Haha! Yeah I was beginning to wonder if I might have more luck in London.. Only 51 minutes away by highspeed train! But it's quite a distance. Who was the person you tried? I found a number on "musicteachers.co.uk" but usually those sites are really out-of-date. I haven't played in quite a while! Not properly anyway. I miss being in an orchestra a lot... There is an orchestra at my university but I wouldn't dare go near it until I'd had some lessons again!
 3.
Welcome to Canterbury, and let me know if you find a decent tutor down here, I haven't managed it yet
Oh, really? I didn't think that Canterbury would be the sort of place to be hoarding bass teachers to be honest, although I haven't really looked much. Such a shame really.
 4. Hi, I used to play double bass a couple a year ago at about grade 6/7 standard. Would really like to take up lessons again in September of this year when I can bring my double bass to university. If anyone knows anyone in the area, drop me a line? Thank you
 5. How did I miss that. So sorry :/
 6. I used this site a good few years ago now, met some really lovely people and bought a German bow from someone... And then I moved to university and couldn't bring my double bass with me. Two years on, I really regret that decision. In September, I move into a bigger student house and I really want to get back into practice. I used to be grade 6/7 standard but I have no idea where I would be now. I played a little bit the other day, but I think I really need lessons. Forgive me if teacher-searching threads aren't allowed, or if this is in the wrong place, I really worry about getting things wrong on forums :/ I'm in the Canterbury area and I don't even know the first place to start looking for anyone. I'm more interested in classical music than in jazz. So! There's my cry for help. I hope it's not too late for me! Thank you
 7. It's nice to know we aren't alone in the World.
 8. Haha! We're all very suspicious of the avatar anyway o_O Me! I are woman too. ^-^
 9. I've never seen the trolleys that convert into stools o_O They look awesome. I have tiny wheels on the bottom of my case and am becoming very aware they are going to disappear soon.
 10. I think the difference between that, then, would be that learning Bach note for note is generally not as predictable as figuring out bass lines? I guess it also depends on the complexity of the bassline.. But following chords and such, i guess once you've figured out what sounds good and tends to work in most songs, you'll be okay. There will be exceptions obviously.. That's what i think you're saying, Wil. If not feel free to correct me. I'm still learning my scales. And the fretboard. I seem to be a bit of a failure when it comes to theory etc. Hopefully i'll learn.
 11. You're in Southampton! That's where I live! This looks slightly possible.. I'm guessing there is somewhere in this city we can get books on how to play 5 string?.. If not.. I could probably work it out. Is this still available? Please reply!
 12.
How do you play when you don't know what notes you're playing.
I am also wondering that.. And i need to learn the notes on the fretboard also, so thankyou for this thread
 13.
Hi all. I've been following this thread a while, as I have been wondering the same things as the original poster; however I have had more in the way of time constraints to consider. My answer was not to study in the UK at all, but to go to the Players School Of Music in Florida and study with Jeff Berlin. For a fuller review, search my threads. I posted a really long one after I finished up a 1-month course there last year. I'm intending to go back either Oct or Jan next year for 3 months. Cost including flights/accom/tuiton/car hire/etc for 1 month was about £1700. I lived real tight for a while. Cost for 3 months is going to be around £3000. I think it's great value for money though. 6 months later I'm still improving and practicising daily. Pete
That sounds truely amazing. I'm looking at universities at the moment.. It's all horribly confusing. I hope to take my Grade 8 next year, so i don't think that'll be to much of a problem. I just need to concentrate really hard on achieving my music A level..
 14. Steve Bailey and Victor Wooten playing "A Chick From Corea." I absolutely adore this piece. It's the second theme that i love, that Steve plays on his fretless (starts at 46 seconds in). I think it's truely magical. Chick From Corea Also, the beginning of "Better Get Hit In Yo' Soul" by Charlie Mingus. I like all Mingus stuff though! Better Get Hit In Yo' Soul It's one of my fave pieces to play with my Jazz Band! (I'm no where near as good as the guy in the video though..) Herbie Hancock's "Tell Everybody." LOVE the bassline to this, but i can't do slap bass, i have no idea where to start, no money to get a teacher, and my double bass teacher teaches purely classical. I'll try work it out one day.. Tell Everybody And Geoff Gascoyne deserves a mention. Because i think he is amazing. Geoff (And Jamie Cullum) Sorry i'm so jazz orientated.. I'm really badly educated in music.. Still i think these have to be some of my favourites that i have come across so far!
 15.
First off - how do I know if I've adjusted the bow to the correct amount of tension?
I tighten it so that when i push the hair towards the wood of the bow, it doesn't take much for it to touch.. If i have to apply a lot of pressure, then it's too tight. If that makes sense.
Should I loosen the bow off after use?
Yes. I always do - And although Dougal says so it's not flapping around in the breeze, i'm very protective of my bow, so always slacken it off a lot. But that's just because i'm picky like that.
How often should I apply rosin to the bow, and how much?
I apply rosin when my bow starts slipping on the strings, which is probably bad practise because it can vary everytime you play something including lots of movement on the strings.
I'm getting a build up of rosin on the strings, should I clean it off and if so, with what?
A duster like Dougal said..
Any other tips would be appreciated dudes!
Just a random one - I didn't know how to transport my bow for ages, 'cos i have to carry it to and from college almost every day, and couldn't find a proper bow case. The solution - One of those big long plastic tubes that artists use to store their paintings in by rolling them up! It's perfect, and i added in some foam so that the bow doesn't bounce around too much. It's also extendable, so if i get a longer bow at any point it wouldn't be a problem And i think it cost about £5! Sorry if none of that was helpful..
