  1. Okey dokey! Didn't realise that it had been this long... So, I left it where the smell was dying down a little, with no word back from GK. Maybe the email didnt send properly or something cos there's no sign of it in my outbox...I blame Windows 8... All was well and good, getting better at least, then the HF horn decided to go on me. I was well happy... So back to the shop it went (Sounds Live in Newcastle), they're a friendly bunch, and they said it would take at least a couple weeks to be sent out and come back. That was the second week in January. I waited a while and checked on any progress. 'They're waiting for a replacement part' was the answer, and I was also informed that GK don't do shipping parts by air, no, it was literally being shipped. On a boat. From China. I was well happy... Then I get a phone call saying the part was in the country, not at the service centre, in the country. So close! But no cigar exactly. Turns out they were still waiting for the part that never came so they've decided to cut their losses and supply me with a shiny brand spanking new amp instead. Here's hoping the other one was just a bit of a dud and the new fella is a touch more realiable/less smelly/not broken in a few months! Cheers!
  2. I've had the MB210-II now for 5 months now, and I love it. I play in a trio doing the usual (and unusual, downright stupid) covers and have never had volume issues...it's rated at 350w standalone, 500w with extension, not to mention the option of the powered external cabs too. Currently I dont NEED extra cabs, although I may WANT them! I usually set the 'Boost' dial to about 1 o'clock and it's plenty growly for me! Big plus for me is the 16/17ish kg weight...my back loves me for it!
  3. Ok, so, no reply as of yet from GK...it's been just over a month, not the greatest service in the world... But...I can confirm that the fan does spin up during use, not just straight away. And best of all, the smell has nearly gone! It's very, very subtle now, and still no loss of power/volume... So, happy days! Thanks again for all of your input fellas, cheers!
  4. Cheers for the info guys, you always come up with the goods! Will blast off an email to GK, just to make doubly sure about the fan, and the smell! Will post what they say when I get a reply!
  5. Doesn't spin upon powering on, not sure if it should tho...are some temperature controlled?
  6. Hey guys, I'm having an issue with my amp, which is the 350w GKMB210-ii combo. I bought it at the end of June, gigged it maybe 9 times now. It's producing a weird smell, almost like an odd TCP-ish (to my nose anyway!) kinda thing... On Sunday night we were in a multi band line-up and the sound guy told our guitarist he could smell an overheating kinda smell that was only there when we played. This made me think back to our previous gigs and I realised I had in fact thought there was an odd smell about but it just didn't click until then! I'll be the first to say I don't know what overheating really smells like, hence the vague description...but it's definitely my amp! I don't think I'm driving the amp exeptionally hard, nothing's past the 12 o'clock position, but here's a pic of my settings I've been using live: I've got the -10dB in the 'out' position, and both Limiter and Horn 'in' with the Contour 'out' as well. I play a passive Corvette $$ if that makes any difference... It's never lost volume or sound quality either which I would've thought would happen with overheating issues... So, should I be worried? I've looked up the issue online but the info and advice varies. Some say return it, others say that GK's sometime smell funny for a while when new! Any advice would be massively appreciated! Thanks in advance!! Screeny.
  7. Not keeping the Ashdown, the GK's a nice lightweight 2x10 combo (16kg), 350w standalone, 500w with an extension so got plenty power I reckon. Not sure whether I'd have better success selling the Ashdown as a head or sticking it back in the combo with a busted speaker...hmm...guess I can give any buyers the option I suppose...
  8. Update! Provisionally sold the Trace cab, just waiting for the guy's payday at end of month, still need rid of the Ashdown head, but, it's ok cos it's NEW AMP DAY!! Bit the bullet (and the other half's credit card) and I'm now the proud owner of a shiny new GK MB210-II. Pretty much ticked all the boxes, one handed lift, more power than before etc... Thanks for all the input guys!
  9. Ok guys, option number 3... Originally, the Ashdown head was part of a MAG 300 2x10 combo (one of the first ones, bought it in 2003). Last year one of the speakers went 'bye-bye' so I bought the Trace 4x10 cab off a mate for £70, made a box for the head to sit in and used them as a head/cab setup. Now, I still have the Ashdown combo (w/no head) upstairs in the cupboard. Would replacing the speakers be a viable option? The whole combo probably weighs half of the Trace cab, and I had no problems carting it about before... If this idea's worth following up, any recommendations? I'm not looking to spend a massive amount, so somewhere between £100 and £150 for a pair?
  10. Cheers for the heads up with those two, the Markbass went by the time I looked and the Eden is a bit too far for me really, I'm based in County Durham! I'll keep a lookout for something similar tho, haven't got too many gigs booked in for the near future so I won't be breaking my back that regularly!
  11. Thanks guys, all replies are much appreciated. It's a bit like I'm feeling round in the dark with where to go next amp-wise to be fair! There's a few factors going on at the mo: I'm in a gigging band, although not exactly out every weekend (more like once a month at present), budget is a bit of a concern - £350-£400 max, my current setup can't continue for too much longer (work related back injury and resultant physio sessions) and I've been out of the loop for a while with what's going on in the amp world of late! I haven't even thought about the second hand market...any ideas there?
  12. The TC looks interesting too thanks! I definitely want to move away from head+cab, and to be honest the Ashdown's not in the greatest condition...
  13. So, currently I'm using an Ashdown MAG 300 head through a Trace Elliot 4x10 cab. This setup literally weighs a ton! Car sharing with a drummer is interesting too... Now, I'm looking to buy something new, smaller, lighter etc for a more pleasant gigging experience! I've seen a couple options in my price range, one of which being a Gallien Krueger MB112-II combo. This one really appeals at the mo, either this or the MB115... So what I'd like advice on, is how they'd compare volume-wise to the Ashdown. Both are rated at 200watt and the Ashdown at 300watt, and I realise that watt ratings aren't a clear volume indicator but with there being 100watt difference I'd like to get some opinions from people more in the know than me! Any advice on either of these, or, any other similar combos you'd recommend would be more than welcome! Thanks in advance!
  14. Cheers guys, it is quite the back-breaker! Ideally I'd like to keep hold of it, it sounds awesome but unfortunately I've had a few back problems of late so I should look into getting something a little lighter! Thanks again for the input!
  15. Hey guys, last year I bought a Trace Elliot 4x10 cab off a mate for £70 when the speakers in my Ashdown 2x10 combo died. I was planning to use two of the speakers from the cab to get the combo up and running again, but when I checked I found them to be unsuitable. After looking up some info on the Trace speakers it's left me a little curious as to what I have... When I bought it, my mate said it was a 'proper' Trace Elliot, from the 90's he reckoned, but couldn't tell me any more... Ive found that it's got four Celestion C10T-80 32ohm speakers, and when I looked them up some people referred to them as 'vintage' units and quite rare nowadays. Is this right? From the pics below, you can see the model number and serial info is pretty much worn off now as they were obviously hand written. So basically, I want to know if anyone could tell me a bit more about the cab I have, ie age range, current value etc.. Thanks for looking, hope you can help!
