1. I started out playing slap with my thumb down until someone told me I'd get a better sound and better accuracy if I played with my thumb parallel ot the strings. Having switched to playing this way I appreciate that it is a far better way to play. It won't only help for learning double thumb etc., you can move up and down the strings more fluidly this way and you get a more powerful slap. Don't worry if it feels strange at first, it took six months for me to become accomodated to playing that way but I'm glad I did it.
2. Bought a MM stingray of James, mint condition and a GREAT price. Very easy transaction with a very easy-going bloke. Highly recommend!
3.
Scott's reasons are purely medical. Apologies in advance if you're already aware of that.
I wasn't, whats his problem? Also does anyone ever get that problem when they've just came in from outside and your fingers keep sticking on strings completely killing the fluency of playing? I find the gloves overcome it, and they're only the cheap cotton ones from the corner shop.
4. Saw Scott Devine doing this so tried it today, I have to say it makes my fingerstyle a lot faster and more even, particularly when the hands are dry. Has anyone else tried this? I'm slightly wary of using them onstage at the risk of looking like a pretentious pleb.......
5.
3, this one probably isnt applicable to most people but i was just staring at my turtles and they paddle left, right, left right when swimming so i just copied them and made a swiiming tune for them and when they paddled left it was index and right i used middle. You dont need to buy turtles though they take a lot of looking after and grow big
Easily the best exercise I've heard of, EVER. I think this could also be used as a cure for depression in bass players lol.
6. I'd say keep practicing strict alternation up and down the strings. But when you're just jamming or having fun on the instrument go back to what you're comfortable with. When you play fast lines using two fingers WILL sound better and reduce the risk of tendonitis from using one finger too franticly.
7. Not the songs you mentioned, but my favourite run is a chromatic build for 'I feel good - James Brown' which goes from A-B-C-Csharp. Works really nice over the D9 (i think) chord in the chorus leading back to the verse. Simple, but works, one of the few times i've felt that my idea has improved on an original funk track.
8. Hi, looking for a decent keys player to play in a gigging funk/disco/pop cover band based in liverpool. Current line up is: female lead vox, guitar, bass and drums. PM for further details and setlist. Cheers, Adam
9.
I am a pro player, good grooves, good sense of humour.
Modest too....
