  1. Is this still available?
  2. Trying to be clever. Having read all of the other explanations I feel like a bit of a pseud now!
  3. My band went in a similar direction to the one MoJoke suggests. Having got thoroughly fed up of lugging around the flightcased mixer/power amps (yep, 2 of the buggers) behometh we went for a pair of Mackie Thump 12 powered full-range speakers. http://mackie.com/products/thump We only use PA for vocals, so this option may not of course work if you're using the PA to support bass and/or kick. We've ditched the power amps altogether; we've got powered monitors as well

  5. I'm lined up to do something very similar to the OP, a wedding gig in November covering for a bassist who's retired ( I wasn't aware that this was an actual thing!) since the booking was made. The tentative set list as agreed with the singer/guitarist is as follows: - Summer of 69 My Sharona Walking on Sunshine Johnny B. Goode Caroline So Lonely 2-4-6-8 Motorway London Calling Get It On Girls Talk All Right Now 'You want that with extra cheese sir?' Abso-flippin'-lutely!!
  6. Puts me to mind of a bass shape that's being distorted as a consequence of travelling very fast - The Javelin??
  7. Sorry to say but there really are some people that just don't have natural rhythm. Our singer is a bit like the one the OP describes. He does however recognise the issue and gets around it mostly by learning the songs verbatim (we play exclusively covers). Every once in a while he takes my breath away by coming in on the wrong beat, and staying on the wrong beat until the rest of us fall about laughing. This is fine in rehearsal, but once in a while it happens when we perform. It certainly keeps you on your toes! We put up with it as otherwise he's a very good front man.

  9. My singing voice is quite good, I can hold a tune etc., but I always used to shy away from singing backing vocals whilst playing bass for all the reasons mentioned above - countermelodies, insufficient brain power, whatever. I've mostly got around this by trying to learn new songs for my covers band all at once, learning to sing the backing vocal at the same time as getting to grips with the bass pattern. Sometimes this doesn't work, especially if the bass pattern is particularly busy, but the approach certainly got me started singing bv.
  10. The Specials - The Specials The Jam - All Mod Cons Aged about 14, playing along to these over and over again in my bedroom. Must've driven the rest of my family mad!
  11. Might be worth a visit to Musicbox anyway. If nothing else there's a notice board in the foyer where people advertise gigs, gear for sale, bands looking for musicians (and vice versa). You could put a poster up 'bassist seeking band'. It might even be worth asking the guys that run the place whether they know of any opportunities to play, either open mic or band openings. They're a friendly bunch
