1. Hi guys. I'm coming over to Edinburgh to live permanently from the 03/07/2015 onwards and I'll be looking preferably for a covers band to join (will consider originals). I'm already in Europe but will be settled from the 3rd of July onwards. I'm 31 and have my own gear. I have played in covers bands from age 17. Here is a quick demo of my playing: https://myspace.com/mojonewcastle Please feel free to ask me any questions. Thanks!
2. Hi. Thanks for the info! I'll send them an email. Cheers.
3. Hi guys. I'll be moving over to the UK for about year on the 15th of May. I'll be doing a bit of travelling before settling down, but I was just wondering if there is anywhere where I can try out a Wal bass? I've got to try out every brand of bass I've wanted to try except Wal, as they are extremely rare in Australia. My only experiences with them, is hearing them on Tool, Rush and Porcupine Tree albums and I've always loved the sound. Is there anywhere that usually stocks them or can you actually go to Wal directly and play one? Cheers, Luke.
4. Wow, thanks for the info everyone!
Yeah there's plenty of work if you're happy to play pub standards (60s,70s,80s pop and rock). Sounds like you're looking at Berkshire. Slough, Reading, Maidenhead etc all have lots of pubs that have live music. Slightly further afield there's Luton, St. Albans, West London, Woking, Guildford etc all within an hours drive and busy! There'll be as much work as you want. If you want to work with two or three bands and you're happy to travel then you can work two or three nights a week. Pubs pay on average £200-£300 in the South East. Wedding bands sound great and pay well but hard to get off the ground in every respect. Best of luck
Pub standards are exactly what I'm looking to do, so that sounds great. Thanks for the info.
Quite... this is why people move to Aus from the UK not the other way round...
Haha. Good point! From what I've seen so far, rent in Sydney seems quite comparable to London. Both are reasonable expensive places to live.
5. Hi. I'm currently located about an hour north of Sydney on the Central Coast, NSW.
6. Thanks for the info! There's actually no place set in stone to move to at the moment, as both me and my girlfriend, who I'm coming over with, both have UK passports, so we just want to move to somewhere where there is a decent amount of work around and not too insane rent wise. I'm still researching, but at the moment I'm looking at towns that are a short train ride to London, places like Amersham and Beaconsfield, because I've never been a huge fan of living right in the city. But if someone told me a certain area was great for live music I would try and move closer to there.
7. Hi. I'm currently living in Australia but I'm relocating over to the UK for an extended period of time in May of this year. I was just curious as to what the covers band scene is like there? I've played in covers bands for over ten years and would like to continue doing so once I'm over there, so my main question is, is there much work for covers bands there? In Australia, the covers band scene has changed drastically over the last 10-15 years. Most of the venues that used to put on bands now only put on DJ's, so there's not as many venues anymore for live bands unfortunately.
8. Hey. Thanks for that. I'll post a new thread in there. I'm from the Central Coast, NSW, about an hour north of Sydney.
9. Hi. My name is Luke, I'm currently living in Australia and I've been playing for about 15 years (currently 30 years old). My Dad was born in the UK and I've just gotten my British passport. From May onwards this year, I'll be coming over to the UK for an extended period of time. I've played in a few originals bands over the years, but I've mainly played in covers bands. Here is an old recording from my favourite covers band that I played in from about 7 years ago: https://myspace.com/mojonewcastle I joined this forum to search for gear while I'm over there and to also find out more about the current climate in terms of live covers shows. In Australia, it's hard for covers bands as it's so spread out over here so you are pretty limited in terms of how many shows you can book. Is there many opportunities at the moment in terms of covers bands in the UK? Any areas I should check out or should I try to base myself around London? I intend on getting a 'normal' job as well, but would like to gig as much as possible as well. Thanks in advance to anyone that can give me some advice. Cheers, Luke.
