1.
Nick I suspect there are very few people in the country with more than 50 basses.
Sting probably does. I'm on 4 myself...two Squier P-Basses, one Squier Jazz, and one Spector Legend-4. I only ever use...the Spector. I could probably lose the others, but they all have sentimental meanings...my black P-bass was my first bass, my white P-bass was my Frankenstein-project-that-never-was, my Jazz was a gift, etc...I can't justify four basses really, but f*** it.
2. I think the kind I bought was called Duck Tape too, but I always just assumed it was a knock-off from some other brand called 'duct tape'. Hence why I never used Gaffa Tape in my post.
3.
it didn't win over the Metal crowd.
Don't worry, nothing does.
4. I've read that if your fingers get cut during live playing, throw in some salt. It'll probably hurt like a bastard for a few minutes but it helps to cauterize the cuts enough for your digits to survive the show. (I think I read that one in a Hugh Cornwell book.) I try to avoid drinking before I go on. I've broken this one once or twice and it usually results in mistakes, sloppy playing, spilled beer on equipment, flooded leads, broken glasses on the floor, etc...your band won't be happy with you. Unless they are drunk too, in which case you can bask together in your mutual musical failure. Grolsch bottle stoppers (the red things!) make great last-minute strap-locks. You can never bring enough duct-tape. Avoid the 'monitor pose'. http://www.musicplayers.com/images/john_petrucci.jpg It ain't smart, it ain't cool, and imitating this pose gives John Petrucci the legal right to sue your bollocks off. Can't think of any others right now, thankfully.
5. I find the OC-2 very effective for playing individual notes at -1 octave, particularly combined with a nice overdrive tone. Problem is, I play a lot of bass chords too, and if you're unfortunate enough to have the OC-2 turned on while strumming a chord, you're treated to a sound vaguely resembling two people farting into empty Pringles cans. Don't ask how I arrived at that analogy. Otherwise the OC-2 is great!
6. I was expecting at least one of The Bobs to be named Bob. http://www.bobs.com/about.html And none of the Bobs play instruments! Not even bass! I don't know these guys' game is, but it smells kinda fishy.
7. Hey guys! My name's Bob. I'm from Aberdeen, and I have been playing bass for about 8 years in various bands. I'm currently band-less but occasionally fill in on the bass for some bands. I play a few basses: my baby is my Spector Legend-4, but she is backed up by a couple of sturdy Squier P-basses and J-basses. I've not ventured into 5-or-6 string territory yet but I'm toying with the idea. I like all kinds of music, but my favourites are rock, metal and industrial rock. My bass heroes include guys like Justin Chancellor, Rex Brown, Billy Sheehan, JJ Burnel, John Paul Jones and Victor Wooten. It's great to be on basschat, talking bass with some like-minded guys and gals. Thank you!
8.
I like being the strange bassist. But I dont need a bass to be strange
Amen!
9.
Chancellor generally plays what seem like guitar parts on his bass
Some of his basslines definitely sound guitar-influenced but I think he uses those effects/pitch shifters/delays/chords/melodic weirdness to fill in the sonic gaps in Tool's 'four piece'.
10. The heat is a bastard. So is the sweat...everything just goes to hell, you miss notes with the slippery neck, your shirt is constantly stuck to your back, it gets in your eyes...I think at one point Jason Newsted had to start having his basses waterproofed because his profuse sweating kept destroying the electronics. Maybe he should have bought a floor fan.
11. I had a gig last weekend in aid of Cancer Research UK at this out-of-the-way, country restaurant. We had between 10:30pm-1am to rock the joint, which was great fun as everyone was on form and the sound was good in the dance floor area. The sh*t part was that, naturally, only about 40 people showed up (mostly our friends and regular hillbilly punters), not including 2 bouncers - who were there to prevent under-agers from acquiring booze - who each received roughly 80 pounds for their several hours of standing around, doing f***-all. Considering the event only raised about 200 pounds, from which the bouncers were paid, we were a bit pissed off.
12. I bought a Spector Legend-4 ( http://img3.musiciansfriend.com/dbase/pics.../9/6/396496.jpg ) last year after 7 years of playing various Fender/Squier P- and J-basses, and it became an overnight favourite of mine. I play a blend of rock and metal (Alice in Chains, Pantera, Tool, etc.) and it adapted wonderfully to those styles, with great tonal control. A few too many pots for me, but there's no doubt that they could produce a tone for any style in the right hands, with some tweaking. Not to mention, it's dead sexy, has good weight balance, comes in several finishes, and feels great in the hands. A great package for only 300 quid. Hope this helps!
13.
Rex Harris. A criminally under-rated bassist in my opinion.
I meant Rex Brown, from Pantera...my mind drifts at this time of the working day.
14. Oh - forgot to add Nate Mendel (Foo Fighters) to that list. His lines are relatively simple, but he is as solid as a rock. And he never messes up! Never! Anyone else notice that?
