i started a few years ago at 38 years young.
got lessons for a few months to get started.
Online lessons are awesome, but you need someone in the flesh every now and then to tell you what bad habits you are picking up.
defo +1 on joining a band, i did it last year and my learning sky rocketed.
i put an ad on joinmyband looking for other older newbies to get together with. We've got a rookie bassist, singer, guitarist and drummer so noone feels too foolish.

Thanks for the advice Ribbit, I've been thinking along the lines of getting a few lessons. Once I can actually hold a tune I'll look into the band thing also.
