Hi, Fairly new here (be kind) - spam me with links if this is an oft asked question (I have searched) or if I'm asking in the wrong bit of the forum. I have been playing bass now a while and have a lesson every month of so as I don't have the confidence to join a band (yet), because of work I won't have a lesson for a while and I'd like to put together a few tracks that really push my playing and show my teacher I have been listening to the theory drummed into me! I play a lot of REM, RHCP, 90's rock, Rush, Beatles - I like funky bass lines and strange time signatures! I have a 4 string Cort & a 5 string Ibenez, I love my Cort and always reach for it but could really do with playing my 5 string more. Thanks in advance (not Dreamtheatre btw - I don't have enough strings!)

Thanks for the welcome - I'm certainly settled in for the ride. Opted to have lessons for now and those are giving a reasonable amount of structure but I do need to bite the bullet and get out more to play with others. Will check out your links. Seeing as how I am still very much at the [i]'learning'[/i] to play bass I've done it two ways as I've learnt twice. First time bought a bass, found tracks I liked and downloaded rudimentary tab and took some lessons off a guitarist who also taught bass. The style of lesson being to work out some riffs, drink a lot of tea and mostly talk about the guitarists gigs. I played a few sessions with other musicians with an idea of forming a band. Various reasons I put bass away for a decade. Second time around I found a teacher who is a bassist, and who doesn't just teach how to play a track but the theory behind it. I put in a decent amount of practice, find my own tracks to learn and work on the tracks I'm given and the theory practice. I'm making slow but steady progress - and bad habits are stopped but nuances encouraged. Can't learn from books, just beginning to be able to learn from YouTube videos, that and always staring at the bass player at gigs (earnt me a few dirty looks that has)

2nd forum post. be nice. Picked up my bass again after almost 10 years absolutely determined to gig - 9 months from picking up my bass again I'm pretty keen to get gigging but current commitments mean its difficult to find and fit in a band. That said I'm a fairly tenacious creature and so I will gig - even if to start with the music isn't 100% my cup of tea. Somewhere deep inside is an exhibitionist just waiting to get on stage.

Hey - hi. So its too cold to play well and I refuse to turn the heating on yet so turning to some forum research. Bought first bass (Cort) over a decade ago but life got in the way and it was put to one side. Now life has changed direction I have picked up my 4 string Cort (inexpensive but am assured sounds nice and I love it - it will never go!), added a 5 string Ibenez SR305 to the family and am hovering over the purchase of an acoustic 4 string on sale locally. I don't play confidently yet but getting there, hunting for a gig setup and people to play with. Its easier to say what I don't play than what I do in terms of music, have a strong fondness for prog and heavier rock but also like folk and with sufficient alcohol will listen to anything except jazz. Enjoy playing blues and indie as well. Definitely know not enough about kit - hence why I'm researching - and also know very few other musicians. Please be kind!
