1. I've got a black SB600 - great bass, had it for 30years! It's done me well over the years but for me it has two weaknesses, 1) it's passive pup is a bit limited in terms of tones - it's big mind you! And 2) it's bloody heavy!
2. https://youtu.be/8qu_vCKJMuM I'm sure everyone's seen this, but hey... https://youtu.be/80dsyo2Ox-0 And a couple of Jaco for good measure... He managed to play lots of notes and/or few notes and keep the groove *and* make it sound right! https://youtu.be/Xn9IqOTIkD4 https://youtu.be/pgwkvbzd9x4
3. Arthur Conley's "Sweet Soul Music" name checks Sam and Dave, Lou Rawls, Otis Reading, James Brown and Wilson Pickett! Kid Rock's " All Summer Long" is a shameless rip off of Sweet Home Alabama and mentions the original in the Chorus. Madness "The Prince" is about Prince Buster U2 "Angel of Harlem" is a tribute to Billie Holiday The Who's "The Seeker" has the line... "I asked Bobby Dylan, I asked The Beatles"
4. Two comments... JJ was massive for me as a teenager picking up the Bass and "Standing in the Shadows" is one of the few books I bought back then that still has a place on my shelves - I loved that it was pro players who did the work and took you through the pieces on the audio. On the notation/tab debate... I'm not a sight reader by any means so Tab is my main method, but I do find Tab tends to box me in. Ie. I learn the patterns and the placements but not the reasons why it works. Secondly, I like to find my own way of interpreting a line - fingering, frets etc. that allows me to put a bit of myself into the track. So, even using Tab I find myself rewriting and adapting it.
5. Love the Smiths too... Mind you I think many of the greatest bands split listeners! Personally I love bands that are creative, quirky and actually say something - I tend to like bands that push the envelope a bit, even if it means it's not perfect. As has been said before, thank goodness we have different tastes, otherwise life would be very boring... We might not have Metal music though, which would be a plus! ;-)
6. Joanne Shaw Taylor in Shrewsbury - great gig in a small venue. That lady can really play the Blues!
7.
http://www.northwestguitars.co.uk/tele/
Cheers. But, I've got a Tele one its one for my P Bass deluxe special I want. I'll see of they can do one.
8. Quite simply one of the best bands of all time! In recent years I've been listening to Strummers post Clash work, his Mescaleros era song writing was as good as it ever was IMHO!
9.
Took everybody's advice and gone for Tim Allen's scratch it, turns out he owns (or used to own) one of these basses and so he has a template ready despite it not being offered on the website. I messaged last night and already have a reply, so think I will go for him, seems all good. Link: http://www.originalscratchplates.com/
Sadly he doesn't do multi-ply guards and I was thinking of a BWB to match my blacked out Tele.
10.
Oooh, some nasty hateful jazz rock fusion shredding stuff http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NZopolc88U
Good for RSI and that's about it! ;-)
11. Got the same bass, and have been pondering getting her a new look too so thanks for the links. roconnell, who is the company you found that makes them?
12. My first P (I had a Jazz in the '80s which I regret getting rid of - but it had issues and I was a teenager!). Mexican P Deluxe Special...
13. Not a Bass story, but a friend of mine used to play Keyboard do a major Christian event/conference. One evening the Worship leader started talking to the 4000+ congregation, my friend was expected to play quietly underneath this. After about 20 mins the leader turned round and gave my friend a very stern look... Having just noticed that those deep and meaningful chords were actually slowed down and rearranged theme tunes from Soap operas!
14. It still seems to be up at that price. http://www.dv247.com/guitars/ibanez-btb1605-5-string-bass-guitar-natural-flat--216521
15.
Hi Mark I'm originally from Telford. Are you currently in a band?
Hi Mojo, No not at the moment, my music at the moment is mainly teaching at a Rock Project. Work has me traveling away a lot so gigging is tricky.
