  1. I’ve put my CIJ Mustang up for sale here if anyone is interested. Just don’t think Mustangs are my thing, despite it being a quality instrument.
  2. *SOLD* Fender CIJ Mustang 2004/5. Fiesta Red. Sale only, absolutely no trade offers please. Asking same price I paid which seems to be the going rate for these, with £23 of new strings thrown in. Short scale 30” right handed. Think the finish has faded slightly and is really special in person, more of an orangey red than a pinky red. Freshly strung with D’Addario EXL160M medium scale 50-105 nickel rounds, but I will also include the worn in flats that came on it (thought to be La Bella 760F-MUS 43-104. Strap buttons installed, original strap pins included. Weight is 3.5Kg / 7.8lbs (digital luggage scales), and I didn’t notice any neck dive. 1.5” / 38mm Jazz width nut & 7.25” fretboard radius. For those of you who appreciate these things, the neck thickness front to back, as measured with digital calipers, is 0.835” at the 1st fret and 1.005” at the 12th fret. Certainly not chunky & easy to navigate due to the shorter scale & narrow nut. Excellent condition for a near 20 year old instrument, just a couple of small bumps (nothing I’d consider a ding / chunk, and no paint removed), and a small, very shallow indent on back of neck under 4th fret which I didn’t even notice when playing. I’ve tried to show all these on the pics. There are no nibbles on the headstock. This is a very well cared for bass. Lovely fast non sticky gloss finish to back of neck, and a nice dark rosewood fingerboard, lemon oiled in the last week before restring. It looks beautiful with the white pearloid plate against the gorgeous body as you can see from the pics. It was a bit of an impulse buy but I’ve decided to stick with my P bass & so need to return money into my GAS fund in case something comes up that I can’t resist. Due to lack of packing materials, I am listing this as collection only for now. I live in Southport and work near St Helens so collection in one of those, or meet up in the North West within reason is possible, around my work shifts. I will include a basic gig bag for protection on collection or meet up. This is a top quality bass as anyone who has played a MIJ Mustang can vouch for. It has been owned by at least 2 Basschatters that I’m aware of, and they’ve clearly looked after it, as such it deserves a good home.

Bought a lovely Fender Mustang from Cam. Great to deal with & helpful with meet up. Deal with confidence. Thanks
  4. Nice! I put the JMJ I tried up for sale the same day it arrived. I can sort of see why people like them, and I like the idea of a Mustang with P nut, but I found the neck really chunky front to back, even with the reduced scale I knew it was so thick that I wouldn’t find it easy on the fretting hand. I’m not sure even if I lucked out with a lighter one that it would have worked for me, but at 3.8Kg / 8.4lbs, it was barely any lighter than my P bass, so I moved it on quickly. I think that bass has changed hands a few times before and since, the JMJ seems popular but clearly it’s not for everyone. The MIJ Mustang neck has really surprised me with how easy it is to navigate. I’m a ‘dyed in the wool’ P player though, so I still need to see if I can adjust to SS. Come to think of it, I haven’t even plugged mine in yet! I’m guessing that Mustangs have better string tension than top loading SS basses? Overall it feels better to me than the SBMM SS Stingray I briefly tried, that had a lovely neck and contours, but the body looked very small on me and the reach to the first fret felt even shorter, it did feel like a glorified kids toy in that regard.
  5. Thanks. I've put a new set of D'Addario EXL160M 50-105 nickel rounds on my MIJ Mustang. Already the tension feels better with the clacky flats off, especially on the E. The necks on these are ridiculous, so fast & easy, especially when combined with the reduced finger stretch of SS & Jazz nut. I like it a lot but the acid test will come when I stand and actually play it properly, and discover if I can deal with the lack of body & arm contours. Just a few mins standing at home with it strapped on, and I really miss the P bass arm contour particularly. I've never really even thought about the fact that it exists on a P body, until I play a bass without one. It's whether I can adjust hand positioning comfortably enough and get used to it, as playing with the slab body digging into my right wrist isn't much fun the way I'm used to playing. The neck is fantastic but time will tell if I can deal with the slab body. Am I right in thinking that the only Mustangs with a body contour are the 70s competition ones, and the current Vintera II 70s comp reissue ones? I can clearly see they have a body contour but can't make out from the pics if they also have an arm contour. Do they? I guess some people like the go-faster stripe, but I have to say I'm not one of them. Does a Mustang with body & arm contours and no stripe exist? @Lozz196 I guess you've adjusted ok to the lack of contours on the JMJ?
  6. Absolutely beautiful bass, and I share your pain in realising that a 9lb bass, however much I love it otherwise, is not good for my back / neck / shoulders. GLWTS
  7. Thanks, I mentioned that I think that’s what’s on them anyway. I suspect I’ll prefer D’Addario medium scale rounds anyway. Just deciding between regular light 45-100 or regular 50-105. I’ve seen that if the E is too thin, it’s floppy & boingy like a rubber band, or if it’s too thick it ends up sounding muddy. Interested in thoughts on best gauge for Mustangs, particularly with rounds. Thanks
  8. Thanks, I recall you liking those before. They are coated right? Medium or long scale? I’d just moved onto GHS Pressurewounds on the P bass, really nice smooth rounds with reduced finger noise, like slightly worn in rounds right out of the packet. Doesn’t look like they do them in medium scale, which is a shame. Do people use long scale strings on Mustangs? If so I do have a set of ML7200 Pressurewounds I could try. I already know not to use short scale on Mustangs, I learned that the hard way last time.
  9. Just picked up this absolute beauty. 2004/5 CIJ Mustang (thanks @wayne58) My first ever Japanese Fender bass, heard so much about them. The colour is lovely, I’ve always thought Fiesta Red looked quite pink and was never that keen on it. Does this colour fade over time or something? It looks more orange than red to me, which is great as I’ve always had a thing for orange basses after lusting after the early 2000s Sunset Orange Transparent P bass for a long time. I’m having another go at short scale more out of necessity than anything. Struggling with the weight and finger stretches of a P bass. I love a Precision but it seems to take more effort to play as time goes on, and it really takes its toll on my back, shoulders & neck. This weighs in at a more manageable 3.5Kg / 7.8lbs. I hope I can adjust to playing SS, I’m not sure I gave the only previous Mustang I’ve had (Squier Vintage Modified) enough time in all fairness. Anyway, I’ve raised the action a little (it was very low) and it’s a huge amount of fun to play sat down / lying down, I’m not that used to a Jazz width nut but I really like it. The neck is fantastic and so easy to play. I’ve never liked glossy finish necks much, but this is so fast! May take some adjustment to playing standing but the bass just feels so effortless, it’s almost like cheating! It has what I believe to be LaBella 760F-MUS flats on it. So smooth, but flats aren’t really my thing, even if people rave about these strings. I know this is kind of a Mustang thing, but I’m not sure I can deal with the clacky, dull thud thing. I suspect I’ll try D’Addario EXL170M regular light rounds (45-100), EXL160M medium rounds (50-105) or ECB81M Chromes (45-100) if I want to try brighter flats. I’d like a little more tension, I won’t be needing to bend strings, slap or anything like that. Just pick & fingers. Open to any suggestions!
  10. They could well be GHS Pressurewounds. I use them. They are rounds but are slightly flattened during the process, they call it 'Alloy 52'. They feel smoother than a normal nickel round and give off less finger squeak, they play & sound like slightly worn in nickel rounds without that top end zing you get with brand new rounds for a while. They have black silks, and match your description of them feeling smooth. If you like em, keep em, they're not cheap to buy new. I believe they last well, mine haven't been on long enough to comment on that yet.
