  1. I guess we're all different in that regard. Read once that Marcus Miller would change strings a few days ahead of a recording session to get that new, crisp sound, but just broken in a little bit to take out the initial 'zing' that completely new strings can sometimes give you. He also said in that interview that Anthony Jackson was known to change his strings almost every day. Personally, I have to admit that I often leave the strings on for too long, compensating for the loss of top end on the amp or a pedal. That mosty applies to my J basses, though. On the P basses, I dig a more dull and old-school tone and in some cases the strings remain the same for years. :-)
  2. Hello all. Just a quick update on the amp shootout. I have added the Eich T-1000 as it is voiced differently from the other 'T' amps from Eich. The center frequency for the bass is 70 Hz rather than 30 Hz, and the treble center frequency is centered at 5 kHz rather than 8 kHz. And to my ears at least, this does make a difference. The reason why the center frequencies are different, I guess, is that the T-1000 also has Lo-Boost and Hi-Boost push knobs that will add a bump at 30 Hz and 10 kHz respectively. These knobs are not engaged in the shootout, though.   3. My amp path has been as follows: Hartke HA3500 -> Gallien Krueger 2000RB -> Aguilar DB750 -> Aguilar AG500 -> Markbass F500 -> TC RH750 -> Eich T-1000. So from medium weight to about a decade of heavyweight (GK + Aguilar), but even though the sound of the DB750 was amazing, the weight just started to become an issue. From then on it has been class D lightweight amps all the way. Sure, the big amps has something special on offer as well, but I haven't really been looking back since I moved on to the light stuff.

  6. Since I now have access to a lot of different bass amps (and at the same time), I figured a bass comparison test might be fun.   10. I have kind of an ambivalent feeling about Sadowsky. Having owned 3 (1 NYC, 1 Metro and 1 Tokyo) and played several others (not just in stores, but also at gigs), I was never truly happy with the sound I got. They are great playing basses, though, and I must admit that the P/J4 Metro I had sounded pretty damn good. I needed a 5 though, so I bought one from a local store (a Metro P/J 5 rosewood), and it sounded very nice, but not as good as the 4-string I used to have. Now, I have no preference towards active/passive, ash/alder, maple/rosewood, 34"/35". I used to at some point, but having owned a lot of basses, I have found that there is no pattern to be found in the ones that I have decided to keep and play. But as for the 'on stroids' thing. The Celinder Update I used to own was beating any sadowsky I have ever played by far. But hey.. all of the above is just IMO, of course. Many love Sadowsky and they ae great basses - they are just not for me. Cheers!
  11. I know this is very conservative, but I just love my 79 P to death...! One thing though, mine has an A-neck and that makes all the difference when you grew up playing a Jazz bass :-)

  13. Go for it! It's a fair pice, and JV's are brilliant instruments. I have owned 6 different JV/SQ instruments and I'd say that you' d have to get a 70's MIA Fender to get a better instrument - and many of those were dogs, so you might even have to go through a handful to find one that really outplays a JV... IMO, no 80's, 90's or 00's MIA will outperform a JV. You may find one of similar quality, sound and feel (if you're lucky), but not a better one. Again, IMO.

OK, not all of them may be related to specific sales, but there can be absolutely no doubt that many, many people have bought/sold gear (including basses) on this site! I have bought/sold around 5 basses over the last year or so...
