1. I had this problem with the .73 jim dunlop picks I prefer to use so I just got a stapler, put 2 staples through the pick in a cross shape, pressed down the raised edges and haven't had a pick slip since. Doesn't cut into your finger and doesn't feel uncomfortable either. Works a treat. Did on a whole pack of .73's after that. Here's one I did (went with four on this one though 'cos I was being arty haha)
 2. Personally, I prefer maple boards on my basses both on aesthetic and sound. I've found there is a little bit of a difference sound wise as it gives a bit more of a brighter sound where as rosewood gives more a mid pronounced sound. Tested this by swapping the necks over on a Precision Bass I had a couple of years back and did straight recordings with it. On a last note, nothing can beat a black bound maple fingerboard with black block inlays and a nice amber tint. Phwoar!
 3. Right, i'm clearing this up once and for all. I don't really care what Adam comes back and says as it is all lies as far as I am concerned. Here is my proof on the matter...
the bass stevie sent me is totally f'ed- wont intonate, string spacing rubbish, huge nut, bridge one cm to low,
I'd like to refer people to these photos of the bass. Please take note of the "string spacing" and the "huge nut"... Just so you all know, the nut is the standard nut that came fitted to the neck and the bridge is a standard 4 brass saddle offset wilkinson bridge from AxesRUs. Pre slotted. How or why would the string spacing be out on a Wilkinson bridge? (http://www.axesrus.c...idge-p/wbbc.htm) Headstock: Now, he says the bridge is 1cm too far down the body. if it was, then the strings wouldn't actually sit a long the neck as they do, again, photos below. As you can see, even space either side of the neck. Also, you can see where the back of bridge lines up on the body. The holes the bridge is screwed in to were the ones pre-drilled in to the body. I've also posted a picture of a standard Fender P Bass to show how far back the bridge sits on one of those. Body: Real Fender P Bass: As you see, no difference. Also, if it was, the bridge cover wouldn't of fit on the body properly as shown below
30 holes in the body where he obviously couldnt fit a scratchplate properly, scratchplate looks like pick up holes were cut with a chain saw
Come on mate, bit of an over-exaggeration, there are at most 2 sets of pickguard holes which equals 20 including the pick up cover and thumb rest through the pick guard. Original bridge fitted to the body had 5 back screws and 2 front ones (like this: http://www.jivesound.../bassBridge.jpg) None of which can be seen when the pickguard is on or when the current bridge is on. Also the reason I stated the condition as being "6.5 out of 10" on the listing (http://basschat.co.u...-gone-this-time). Who can honestly say they've fitted a new pickguard to a bass and had the holes line up on every single hole each time because I sure as hell haven't. Also noted that I had to widen the bit the ears of the pick up go down in to. I used a soldering iron (all described to Mr Nowicki on the phone although he's naturally going to deny it) to form it back a bit. (note, He said it wouldn't be a problem as he would be keeping the pick up cover over it). That's the only bit i had to work. Doesn't look like a chainsaw has been at it at all. OTT...
pickups squire pickups and not japanese fenders
I made a genuine mistake on my listing and didn't notice, I accidentally put 2003 instead of 1993 for the pick up year. I can't tell you why I did that as I don't even know myself. I assume tiredness. He reasons for thinking it's a Squier one is because "it has a blue wire which my luthier of 25 years has advised me about" but as I've proven, Fender Japan used blue wires on the pickups during the early 90's. Plus, I was sold the pick up under the pre-tense it was a Fender Japan pick up. Bought it off ebay, paid £30 for it, it sounded good enough so I just took it as that. Sounded different to my usual Seymour Duncan p-ups but that was to be expected. Wouldn't upgrade my basses to the SDs otherwise.
thanks for not returning my calls all messages too ...
You call me when I'm at work, not going to pick up the phone then am I... I would also just like to add that I tried to set up a claim with CityLink and Parcel2Go about sorting out some problems that happened during transit (looks like the bass was dropped and re-wrapped at the depot as there was the original city link postage label underneath another layer of packaging which wasn't applied by me). Obviously, you have to post photos up to the claim. I asked Adam umptine times for photos of the bass as it was when it arrived. What did I get? 3 photos of the body and neck with all the hardware removed. I asked adam for more photos but he refused and kept telling me to use the ones he sent to which I did. Needless to say, the claim has been rejected as he's completely taken it apart.
He has ignored a dozen text messages, phone calls and facebook messages asking for any information regarding the bass an has actually hung up whilst i have actually rang him.
Just because I didn't reply to a couple of the 24 texts and 32 phone calls you sent one after the other in one day, some being blank messages or just one blip calls (literally first buzz on the phone and he hangs up) doesn't mean I was ignoring, I was at work. Busy. Try it some time. Also, never ever EVER did I hang up on Adam when I was on the phone to him. You're dreaming that one up. Again... I'm going to put it out there now that I will not be offering Adam a refund and never will I speak to him again. I would warn anyone else against trading with him too. I removed my feedback from his feedback page but here is what happened over the original payment... Adam had my bank details for 12 days. I sent him the payment details on here and then he copied them on to his phone . I had promise upon promise of "I'll pay you tonight" or "i'll pay you tomorrow morning" or even 3 days without saying a thing to me. Only after I asked John to ask him what was going on did i get a "i'll pay in the morning" message from Adam. This payment didn't materialise for a further 2 days after that. Very VERY dodgy indeed. I only went through with the sale because I needed the money at the time. All in all, i'm not having liar ruin my name on here. I've done too many deals on here to note and only twice encountered a problem which was either resolved by me or the seller/buyer. I'm not going to name names as I don't want them to get involved in this but I've actually had messages from a couple of members on here showing support to my side saying that Mr Nowicki seems like a dodgy character. He is. Steer clear. I shall be posting this to HIS feedback page as well for all to see. Thanks for your time fellow BC'ers.

 5. Loving all of these builds and loving the football shirts on the first page with the P-Bird! I hope they all play/sound as good as they look 'cos they're all beautiful. MOT

 7. Hey guys I'm thinking of getting another Jazz Bass at some point but I'm going to modify the hell out of it. List of customisations I'm contemplating minus the pre amp are: * DiMarzio Model One in the neck position (mounted in to the pickguard and body) * Seymour Duncan STK-J2 or SJB-3 Quarter Pounder in the bridge position * Fender vintage reverse wind tuners * Hipshot BT-2 drop tuner * Leo Quan Badass II bridge * Schaller strap locks Lately though, I've been fitting EMG BQC pre amps to my 2 Tobias basses and since I've done it, I haven't looked back. The tonal variety and boost I get from them has just blown me away. I used my 4 string one for an audition last night and got the job on the spot. The guys kept complimenting me on my tone too! Naturally, I now want to add one of these pre amps to a Jazz bass. I've got 2 options though. Do I go for a BQC then use a stacked volume control (which I've spoken to EMG about and they'll happily supply me with the correct 25k stacked one. I want to make it so it still has the jack input on the control plate) or just go for the BTC which doesn't have the mid control and save some space. Has anyone ever fitted a BQC or BTC to a jazz bass? Stevie
 8. I regret ever selling my Legend 5. Amazing basses and such "bang for buck". Good luck with the sale
 9. I bought an Ashdown Envelope Filter pedal off Dan and he's a pleasure to deal with. Would definitely deal with him again Cheers dude
 10. Hey guys Recently bought this wicked Tobias 5 string bass off another forum member for £100 (absolute bargain) but the finish had been completely stripped and its a bit rough in places so I'm going to do a light sand to clean it up then give it a new finish. Originally, I was going to spray it white but the wood is too nice to cover up so I need your advice on what to use to bring out the nice grain then give it a protective coat. I believe it's a maple body but I'm not 100% sure, it does look a lot like the maple I've seen on the wings of other basses by Tobias. Anyway, the electronics are a mess so I'm swapping the pre amp out for an EMG BQC system. List of things I'm going to be adding to it: - EMG BQC 18v pre amp system (just installed it) - Leo Quan Badass V (black, on order from Owen) - Hipshot GB7 drop tuner on B string (black) - Schaller strap locks (black) - Tele style knurled flat top knobs (black) - Seymour Duncan SJB5-3 quarter pound bassline pick ups (not decided, if not then below) - EMG active jazz 5 pick ups Here's a picture of the bass as it is now: Cheers Stevie
 11. I bought a Tobias 5 string bass off Martyn and he's a real pleasure to deal with. Very smooth transaction and he shipped the bass in a very nice Warwick bass bag. Will be using that permanently! Honestly, I recommend doing business with him. Cheers for the awesome bass dude!
 12. Hey guys I recently bought a 5 string from another user on here for £100 and it's turned out to be an absolute bargain but the only thing I'm not liking is the 34" scale instead of the usual 35" i've played on 5 stringers like Spectors and BC Richs. Anyway, I stuck some new strings on it the other day, Kerly Kues 45-130 gauge then had it professionally set up/intonated with medium to low action (my usual set up) and I've gotta say... THEY SUCK! The G, D and A string sound quite decent and have poor to reasonable tension but the E string sounds a little bit dead. Then we get to the low B... Urgh. It sounds floppy, feels really loose, has no "tone" to it what so ever and just sounds like a sub bass drop when you play it. The main thing is the lack of tension in it, it feels like a really old string that's been tuned far too low (imagine tuning a 105 E string down to C/B... that's the sort of tension I'm talking about). What annoys me most is that these strings are £28! I normally use Rotosound RS66LE (50-110) Swing Bass strings or Rotosound BS66 (43-110) Billy Sheehan strings so I was even considering getting a Billy Sheehan set then buying a low B from Rotosound to go with them. Reason for this is with my endorsement discount, I get either 4 string sets for £12 each or 5 string sets for £15. Sets I've currently whittled down to are: Rotosound RS665LD 45-65-80-105-130 (stainless steel) Rotosound BS66 Billy Sheehan 43-65-80-110 + 130 B (stainless steel) SiT DE-5S Dave Ellefson 45-65-85-105-128 (nickel) Dunlop Rob Trujillo 45-63-80-102-130 (Stainless steel taper core E-G with a nickel plated steel non taper Any help would be appreciated. Please bare in mind that to me, Elixirs and DR strings are too expensive (and in my experience, DR strings are over-rated and I really didn't like them but it's just preference). Cheers Stevie
 13. I had EMG HZ soapbars and an EMG pre amp in a Spector Legend 5 I used to own and ever since have been trying to match that tone in my active basses. Decided to just buy an EMG BQC pre amp, stuck that in my main Tobias bass and loved it so much that I'm going to stick one in the other Tobias I just bought. Absolutely love EMG's products now. I still love Seymour Duncan pick ups for all my passive basses but EMG is the way to go for active stuff. Oh, I fully stand by what Mr Foxen said about running them at 18v or more too. They're not designed to give the best output or tone at 9v so stick another battery clip in there and really wait for it to growl. Currently using an EMG PA-2 pre amp booster with mine too to add some more drive from the bass it's self. LOVE LOVE LOOOOVE IT!
