I use a Markbass Blackline Little Mark 250 made in Indonesia and it is superb. Its equally as good as the Italian-made version I had a few years ago and at £250 is great value I think. I make my own 112 cabs and the difference between the first one I made of B&Q exterior ply (lighter than birch) and the second one I made of lightweight poplar ply is 2.5 kgs. Tonally the poplar one is slightly more "open/airy". They're identical in every other respect. Good for Marco for coming on this forum.

Does anyone know a good amp tech near to Shaftesbury in Dorset?

Is anyone certain it was the [i]wadding[/i] that "blew" or indeed exactly what the material was/is? This whole thread strikes me as being unfair on the manufacturer until the facts are known - its all hearsay up to this point.

+1 for the Laney RB8. Its a solid, reliable combo that sounds good.

I used to have one of these and my impression was that it is 2 x 50 watts into one speaker and splits it 50w/50w into two speakers . . . if you see what I mean. I built an 8ohm extension cab for mine and when using both speakers it was "fuller" but not much louder. Nice amp but heavy for what it is and I eventually went down the route of "separates". There's quite a few threads about it on TalkBass btw.

About 180 watts as it stands @ 8 ohm and 300 watts @ 4 ohm with ext speaker - never needed the gain or volume past halfway . . . ever . . . Its never let me down - I've had it 3 years and it comes with a 5 year warranty. Its a great sounding and very versatile combo that I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who enjoys plug and play reliability from a UK based company. A head and speaker setup should be well within your budget if you shop around.

[/quote] Yacht varnish will not dry hard enough IMO - it remains flexible which is its purpose - you'll have a frustrating time sanding it off too - Rustin's Plastic Coating on the other hand dries (cures in fact) like glass and is virtually indestructible.
