  1. For sale is my Aria SWB-Lite. This electric upright bass has a scale length the same as your typical 3/4 double bass. This is the BIS model so comes with a BIS magnetic pickup to get a nice sound like a fretless bass, and a Fishman Piezo pickup for your more traditional double bass sound. Controls are volume, pickup blend, active treble & bass boost/cut. It also comes with gig bag. This isn't in mint condition, but overall I'd say it is pretty good. I bought this new in 2013, so it is around 10 years old. This means there are a few dings around the sides which I have tried to capture in the photos. The electrics could use a little work if you wanted to use this for gigging, as the pots crackle a bit and the treble tends to hiss, but for a practice bass this is nothing major and has never really bothered me. Also the cover for the battery pack has snapped off, this doesn't affect functionality and can only be seen from the back. I'm only listing this for a short time as there is another double bass I have been keeping an eye out for which has come on sale. If that one goes before I sell this, I'll remove this listing and keep my trusty Aria! I'm also not 100% sure how much this is worth as it is difficult to find previous examples which have been sold in the UK, so I am open to offers and/or advice on an appropriate asking price.
  2. Wishing Well - Free. It used to be on our setlist and we dropped it a while back, but we realised it was a good soundcheck song as it uses clean & driven tones for guitar and bass, and has a good range of high and low notes for both so we can check the full frequency range is cutting through. I also have a few little keyboard parts here and there so I check my keyboard balance in the bridge since the bass drops out anyway.
  3. It's a Seymour Duncan, I don't remember the exact model as I've had it a little while, but it's one of their Musicman ones.
  4. Thanks Matt! I didn't think to check the guitar humbuckers on the Seymour Duncan site! This might be a silly question, but can I assume the wires for the guitar humbucker will be the same as the wires for the Musicman pickup? They both seem to have red, black, white, green, and bare wire on the diagrams, so can I assume these are the same thing on both?
  5. Could anyone point me in the direction for a wiring diagram for a volume/blend/tone with a coil split switch for a P/MM set up please? Or at least advise how I can modify a similar wiring diagram to do this? Thanks
  6. Has anyone been able to get through to BassDirect recently? I ordered a pre-amp and pickups at the start of January. They pretty quickly sent the preamp but not the pickups. After several messages following up with them they finally told me at the end of Jan the pickups wouldn't be ready until March. I asked if it would be ok to cancel the order and return the preamp. They said yes (although tried to talk me out of it as March is only "a few weeks" away, ignoring the fact it was 1-2 months depending on when in March and I'd already been waiting a full month), but since then they have been ignoring all of my emails asking for an address to return the preamp and when I can expect my refund. I'm worried I'm going to receive the pickups in March and be stuck with them. Is it worth trying to refund the order through PayPal, or wait to hear from BassDirect?
  7. It's a great bass, my main gigging bass at the moment. The sound is spot on and it really cuts through the mix. I'm really pleased with it. My only issue with it is I don't love the boost only preamp - I'm tempted to swap the OBP-1 preamp for an OBP-2 to have the option of boost/cut (or maybe even OBP-3 if I'm swapping it anyway), but this isn't a big issue or something I'm in any rush to do right away. I'd also consider swapping the volume pot for a push/pull active/passive pot, as I always worry about battery going during a gig.
  8. Yep, I know because I'm looking to slim the collection a little. 5 basses 1 EUB 2 electric guitars (+1 if including partners) 1 acoustic guitar 1 classical guitar (+1 for partner)
  9. Good idea - if I were to go down the stacked treble/bass route then this would make sense as it would give me even more options. Is the rotary switch suggested because the mini-toggle wouldn't fit the same size hole as the pot, or would a 3 way mini-toggle switch also work?
  10. It might help to show you what I want to use the switch for - I would like the coil tap as shown in the 1st figure of the last page in this pickup wiring diagram. If there are any other creative solutions that just keep the 5 knobs on the preamp wiring diagram from my first post please do let me know! Does anyone know from these diagrams whether it would be possible to set it so the volume active/passive push/pull is also a coil tap, such that it is active humbuckers and passive single coils? This would limit my range of tones but realistically I'm going to want the single coils for a more vintage jazz-bassy tone so will probably want passive most of the time and humbuckers for a more modern sound so will probably want active most of the time. If that is possible then it could be a short term solution just to check I'm happy with the preamp and decide if I think it is worth drilling a mini-toggle at a later stage.
  11. The bass is rear-routed and doesn't have a pickguard so it would mean drilling through the body. If I ever wanted to sell the bass or even if I decided I didn't like the new preamp then this means I wouldn't be able to put the old preamp back in and return it to the original layout. Obviously this isn't the end of the world and if it has to be mini toggle then that's fine, but I'd like to leave the option there if it is possible. I'm open to alternative options too, for example would replacing the bass pot with a stacked treble/bass and replacing the treble with a mini-toggle work? Or are the holes for mini-toggle/pot different sizes? Good point, didn't think about whether it would fit in the cavity! It does seem like the simplest solution would be to try and find the same pot Bartolini have used for their mid control and use it for either bass/treble - it might be worth me contacting them as you suggested. Thanks for the help! If anyone knows where I can find such a pot please let me know! Cheers
  12. Hi all, I've just ordered a pre-amp, with wiring diagram shown at this link. Ideally I also want an additional switch (DPDT on/on), but don't want to do any drilling if it can be avoided. So I was thinking of making one of the pots push/pull instead. The most sensible would be the blend pot for my purpose, but I'm happy with other pots if for whatever reason that makes the most sense (except volume and mid which are already push/pull). I wasn't sure really how to go about finding the correct pot for this? Obviously I need to make sure it has the correct resistance, but is there anything else to look out for? How do I know if a knob has a centre notch? Thanks for the help!
  13. I actually played my first amp free gig last night. My old set up was a TC Electronics amp with built in compressor and distortion, which would mostly standalone but occasionally go through PA for bigger gigs (with my amp acting as a stage monitor). The band recently bought in-ear monitors and have moved towards going through the PA for all gigs, so I was finding my amp was essentially functioning just as a pre-amp/compressor/distortion. The guitarist already stopped bringing his amp and just went straight through a pedalboard and into the PA. I decided to follow suit and just went through an Electroharmonix Battalion pedal straight into the PA. It sounded great, and definitely something I'm going to do moving forward. As this was my first gig doing it I actually brought my amp as a backup but it stayed in the car. In the future it'll make life much easier not having to bring the amp at all. My plan is not to go 100% amp free as I'll still be using my amp for rehearsals and perhaps smaller gigs, but the majority of gigs moving forward I'll probably not bring my amp from now on. The Battalion is a great pedal by the way, if you're like me and never really use pedals/effects then I would definitely recommend that as an amp replacement. Wrap it in bubble wrap and it fits in the front pocket of a gig bag too. Edit to add: Also on the topic of amp-free, for practicing at home there are some great headphone "amps" out there. I use a Fender Mustang Micro which does the job nicely for both guitar and bass, with Bluetooth to play along to backing tracks and USB for recording. I pretty much never play through a real amp at home.
  14. I'm a little late to the party but I'll play (I'm posting now before watching the answer video, and will watch the answers straight after). It's definitely easier for me to guess what isn't a P-bass than what is. #1 I'd say gets closest to the classic sound I think of as a P-bass tone. #2 My guess would be something with a single coil. Original single coil P-bass or J-bass with neck pickup soloed maybe. This was me least favourite sounding bass. #3 is a maybe, I could definitely believe P-bass but I could also believe it was something else doing a good P-bass impression. #4 I'm not sure about, it could have been a P-bass but I suspect it has a humbucker (as in two coils below each string, I know technically a P-pickup is also a humbucker) of some sort due to having a bit more of a growl. That said I wouldn't be surprised if it was a P-bass with some more modern pickups or with the EQ settings changed around. This was my favourite sound of the lot though. #5 was most obviously not a P-bass in my opinion. I can't put my finger on what it was, my guess would be Stingray but you said the pickup is in the P-position. Nice sound, but not a P-bass. Edit: not bad guess work! I was way off with #2 though, I'm quite surprised by that!
  15. This just arrived in the post! It was a bit of an impulse buy, so I haven't decided exactly what I'm going to do with it yet! I need to decide on a finish first (I'll almost definitely just go for a clear coat, although I might stain the mahogany back and the really unrealistic part of me wants to try something like this but I know I'll mess it up and regret it!) I also need to decide on hardware (I'm thinking something black would go nice with the spalted maple), pickups, and electronics (I'd like an active/passive switch for sure). First thing I guess is a bridge so I can drill the holes! Any suggestions?
