1. Its a 1992 MIJ Fender Jazz Bass. It now has two new Fender SCN pickups which i think are just letting me hear the problem more clearly rather than being faulty themsleves. I have recently lined the control and pickup cavities with conductive tape which definitely helps a bit but I think the pots are on the way out and the wiring looks very iffy. I downloaded a wiring diagram from EMG for the jazz bass and it looks nothing like whats inside mine. If I push the neck vol pot at right angles the noise gets really bad ('don't do it then' I hear you say...) while a Fonz-like rap to the scratchplate quietens it down again. Basically I am going to get it rewired and the pots changed whilst saving for something new with good quality electrics. Jazzzzbob
2. I'm going to try an Urge II and any other P/J basses around and then get back to Jon Shuker and (thanks bass ferret!) i am going to pop round to Bernies at GB to see if he would be interested in pricing it up too, better go earn some money... Jazzbob
3. A trip to London is certainly in the offing and thanks for the advice on places to try things out. On the side, I am drawn to the Shuker basses, I notice he has a P/J option for some of the custom basses (listed under the P-basses I think). Anyone have experience of that mix? That 'potential' (unless it just looks good) is what draws me to the Fender Urge II as well as its classic looks. If I could get that bass custom made with copper-canned electronics that might be more than enough for me to handle. Jazzbob
4. Erm... quite a lot to go on there, thanks everyone. Could take me some time to work through these suggestions, I got half way through the list but I had to go out and get my hair cut and my nails trimmed back (curling over into my palms) also I hadn't eaten for 36 hours, just staring at one fantastic bass after another. Really, I think I am going to have to write a list and then go and hunt them out and get my mitts on them. I am in the south east (bit of a problem re: Shuker basses but they look so good I would probably make the trek). Can anyone give me a steer on where to sample some of the beauties mentioned in the south east, Brighton and Eastbourne area especially (or places to avoid...) also where the custom shops are close to me, I know GB basses already but other than that I am guessing there are plenty around? 5. Nordy looks good, especially that black number! What do you know about their innards though, there are lots of p/up options that I don't quite understand, I'm after silent with no dodgy earthing problems at all, ever... Jazzbob
6. Just after I posted this I went to Jon's site, I think custom is the way to go, I'll check out ACG too, Thanks, Jazzbob
7. I have a 92 ('75 reissue) Fender MIJ Jazz Bass which is fine but really noisy electronically (if you can call the flimsy bits of old radio shack wiring in the back 'electronics') its less of a guitar and more of an aerial for picking up background radiation and amplifying it. I am going to line the pickup cavities etc but basically I want a bass I can just play and not have to faff about with. I also have relatively small hands and so I like the width of a jazz neck. I have been looking at the Stu Hamm Urge II as I have about £1500 tops for a new bass but it has the occasional duff review for the same thing, that horrible electronic buzz. Having said that I love the shape of a Fender Jazz and that particular guitar looks mighty fine especially in black. So before I get hypnotised by the Urge's looks (if not the slightly dodgy name) what else would you recommend for a good all rounder for under £1500? Do you have to spend a lot more for 'real quality' or can you get a rock solid, electronically quiet, good looking, narrow neck, no hassle bass for that price. And, if I am trying to get away from iffy wiring and noisy electtrics is there any sense in getting another mortgage and trying to pick up a classic original Jazz? Jazzbob
8. I know, but I have seen someone earthing a Marcus Miller bass and he did encase the pickups in copper, it was like some sort of open heart surgery, take a look at Part three: http://www.talkbass.com/wiki/index.php/Sil..._Signature_Bass I just tried my bass through someone else's amp (I have a Fender Bassman 250/210) and its acceptably noisy, nothing like my set up, so i am going to ask someone to look at the bass and amp at the same time. 9. Thanks, Licking a shiny bit does help (makes my fillings light up too) but I haven't mastered that whilst playing yet, i'll keep stretching and see how far I get. In the meantime I am sure there is an earth problem somewhere so I will ask the guy who fitted the Fender SCN's to take another look and maybe see if it is possible to entomb the pickup casing in copper too. I have tested it on two amps now and its the same 'zzzz', really loud if you play an open string and break contact. Also the neck pickup makes a lot of noise if you go anywhere near it and one or two of the pole pieces make a real din if you touch them with or even get within a few mm, I think its a duff pickup the bridge pickup actually makes less noise if you touch it. Needless to say, unless this is just a 'Friday afternoon' example I am not that convinced by the 'Noiseless' name tag and will see if I can get some other pickups in there, anyone recommend some? EMG look good but I have not used them before... Jazzzzzzzbob
10. I've read the sticky on humming and buzzing and think I have tracked down the buzzing I get on my Fender Jazz bass but I don't know what to do next, short of taking it back to the repair shop. It has a set of Noiseless SCN pickups on but if I use any treble at all I get what sounds like a constant 'transformer' noise, like being up close to a flourescent light. It stops as soon as I touch the strings, control plate or bridge but it gets weirdly worse if I put my hand/body against the back of the bass opposite the pickups. Of course, its the same when I am playing because the back of the pickups are up against my hip. Its as if the pickups are sending a field out through the back of the bass and they really don't like it when you get close. I thought of checking the packing behind the pickups and putting something in as a shield (lead or plutonium maybe...) has anybody got any recommendations or ideas about how to cut that 'field' effect down and, by the way, what should be behind the pickups, if anything? Also I wonder if the bass is earthed properly, is there a simple way to check (with a multimeter or a canary and a naked flame or something) that does not involve too much dismantling as it is nicely set up at the moment... Thanks, Jazzbob
11. Hi, I just had some new SCN 'noiseless' pickups put in a Fender Jazz Bass. They sound great but they have not shifted the earthing/static noise I get as soon as I am not touching the strings, bridge or control plate - then it pretty much goes completely. How do i go about testing if there is some dodgy earth connection that didnt show up even when the pickups were replaced? I should add that when I played the guitar through an EBS amp at the shop after getting the pickups installed no noise! When I plugged into my nearly new Fender Bassman 250, full static attack... Should I move house and get away from the powerstation up the road? Jazzbob
12. Good point, I was thinking of something I could waste a tenner on...
13. Have just bought some Fender flatwounds which are great for the first half hour or so but then, instead of being able to glide, I start to stick to them. Does anyone use a string cleaner or 'treatment' that keeps the glide going? If so what do people recommend? Thanks, Jazzbob
