Not a direct answer to your question, but I also have the SLB 200 coming from playing double bass for a long time. I was initially disappointed with the sound, but have found excellent improvement by changing the strings (to Thomastik Spirocore light gauge), and by EQ fiddling (at present am essentially turning the treble to 0 on the instrument, and similarly on my Phil Jones Bighead) resulted in a more acoustic-like sound, and sticking with the on-board pickup.

[s]£875[/s] Price drop to £700 'Mystic red' body - red sparkly , rosewood fingerboard. All the nice stuff that comes on the recent Fender P basses: Custom shop 60's pickups, string through body option etc. Bought new February 2015 from Thomann, (can provide email receipts etc since has a 3 year guarantee). In brand new condition, not a mark on it I've put on some medium gauge LaBella flatwound strings, and also a gold annodised http://www.tone-guard.com/ pickguard. Original strings and original white pickguard will be included. Complete with all original hard flightcase, and contents (manuals, allen keys, Fender strap etc). Selling so I can try out a 5-string bass! Based in South London, preference for collection in person or happy to meet somewhere in central London. What style of music is she interested in? Although a black double bass looks really cool, I think could be a huge problem for playing in orchestras, where people are generally quite traditional! (though maybe youth orchestras are more forgiving now??) Also from experience, keep some money aside to get the bass set up by someone who knows what they are doing. It's reasonably likely that the bass will arrive in an unplayable (or pretty unpleasant to play) state - this will make a huge difference to her perseverance and enjoyment. This is extra extra important if buying on the internet. Also check out the quality of strings on the bass. Buying cheaper bass with awful strings you'll end up replacing anyway could be a false economy (might be more than £150 for a nice set). A decent set of strings make a huge difference to sound and how nice it is to play. Finally other costs: does she need a bow? (these can be extraordinarily expensive)

will a SLB-200 when packed away fit in my tiny house?
toastieman replied to toastieman's topic in EUB and Double Bass
I tried the SLB-200 out for the first time yesterday at the London Yamaha shop (which by the way is brilliant) - the sound was great, and extremely close to an acoustic double bass in playability and tone. Also, I had expected that it would be best for pizz only, but lovely arco also! Only downside is the lack of body makes holding it a bit difficult while sitting, but looks like there is an optional knee support to help with this. Very impressive though! -
Squier Classic Vibe 60's P bass, in fantastic (and no-longer available) Sonic Blue. Really amazing sounding bass. In excellent condition. Tiny dent in headstock (photographed), otherwise looks new. Few small upgrades: * Tone control replaced with - Stellartone ToneStyler 10 (worth £80): this is fantastic and allows lots of control over tone, many sounds from a P bass, including classic P bass tones. (see Ed Friedland's review here http://jazztimes.com...tonestyler-bass) * La Bella Deep Talkin' Bass flatwounds (medium gauge) * Original E string tuner replaced with a matching Hipshot HB-1 Original pickups (they're great; for why not to swap see here https://tidywords.wo...c-vibe-pickups/) Larger photos: https://www.dropbox....6y/IMG_2404.jpg https://www.dropbox.com/s/7da94qfw292pi9z/IMG_2402.jpg https://www.dropbox....6t/IMG_2403.jpg https://www.dropbox....de/IMG_2406.jpg https://www.dropbox....hx/IMG_2401.jpg Think James Jamerson sounds in Sonic Blue. Slightly reluctant sale to make way for electric upright in tiny house. Prefer for bass to be picked up, based in Tooting, could meet buyer somewhere near here or Central London.
The case is 57"x12"x7" and is easy to fit in vehicles and small houses like mine.I've had my SLB200 for about 6 weeks and will play it on our next gig.Great sound after some adjustments to the bridge and with the right use of the controls on the instrument and amp it can sound a lot like an amplified DB.Expensive but excellent instrument.I use it for jazz standards in a quartet and the band loves the sound-a lot better than the Stagg EDB34 and Yamaha bass guitar I have been using. Both of those are good instruments and have their place but the SLB200 works best for our music.Go for it! Bob in Canada
thanks Bob! I think I will! -
It's relatively small and compact and can easily be kept, for example, behind a sofa (where mine used to live). Really good instrument C
Thanks! How did you find it compared with acoustic DB sound? -
hello all, I've been looking at the Yamaha SLB-200 online, and seems very interesting! But not many places have in stock, so would have to order unseen on the internet most likely. I'm wondering - how big is the thing when packed away in it's case? Is anyone with one able to help please? The specs online only have (I think) the unfolded dimensions - it's not very clear anyway! many thanks!
