Eq'ing a vocal on digital mixer (XR18)
Phil Starr replied to Steve Browning's topic in PA set up and use
It's one of the advantages of a digital mixer isn't it? You can save settings however complex and then refine them over time as you get the chance to listen to the band. It's been an intersting question for me to answer because I've kind of had to re-imagine what I did four years ago when I first got the mixer. I have to admit I probably never set up in as logical way as I pretend online, it's probably more suck it and see Most of the settings on the vocal tracks aren't really eq which I tend to leave more or less flat. I use fairly heavy HPF on all the mics except for the Kick drum (not used much as I've only worked with eDrums for the past few years) I roll off the highest frequencies above 10-15kHz depending upon the mic mainly to reduce the chance of feedback. Then most of what I do is set a noise gate, reverb and delay. I don't use compression for live work, limiting sometimes for more erratic vocalists. I think I eq more for the vocal mics rather than the singer but thats about it in advance. We mainly use Sennheiser E935's with my female vocalists who have all 'borrowed" mine and then bought their own. I have one singer who uses a Shure Beta58 and that's been the one I've eq'd. It's hard to remember as these have all been tweaks carried out over a couple of years of gigging. -
Yes, these threads are definitely bad for your bank account!

New single out now from all the usual downloaded and streaming sites There's also a poptastic remix by Matt Pop:

Very nice - thanks for the observations on the weight. Can't argue with just a bit oil!

No. Never. In the days when I couldn't afford much I bought a Burns Sonic Bass because I thought it looked way more interesting than the P and J copies.

After watching this thread, umming and ahhing and convincing myself I don’t need another bass (I really really don’t), I thought I was out of the woods when they sold out on andertons. but I thought I’d check eBay anyway. £149 and change later, an ‘out of box but unused’ black soloking will hopefully be on its way to me soon! I really need to stop reading these threads!

A singer with an exceptional voice and range who knows how to connect with the audience. No guitarist. Catchy songs and the ability to put on a great performance when we play live:

What separates your band from the other bands in the areas you work in? Not a lot. We're pretty decent, but not exceptional. What do you have that others don't? See above. If you were pitching your band to a prospect, what would be your bast selling point. We won't pinch anything, get drunk or start fights.

Late to report but I've been in Whitby for the April Goth Weekend. We played the Shadow Factory event at The Craft Cove on Friday night with bright new things Social Youth Cult and local stars Westenra. Sold out gig which wasn't that surprising given the line-up. The Crafty Cove is an interesting venue, being a shop during the day and a night club in the evening. When we arrived to load in they were still putting all the clothing racks away. Sound checks nearly over-ran mostly because Social Youth Cult had been told that backline would be provided and then discovered that what was in the venue wasn't very suitable and neither us or Westenra use any that they could have borrowed. Finally got everything sorted minutes before the doors opened. Despite the sound check hiccups Social Youth Cult were even better than when I saw them in October and their sound is veering towards Bauhaus rather than their previous Joy Division heavy influences. It could have been a hard act to follow but I think we managed it. There were some interesting glitches: I managed to hit my bass so hard during the breakdown in "Adore Me" that the wireless transmitter dropped out of the jack socket. Luckily I spotted it before someone trod on it and was able to plug it back in only missing the first bar of the next verse. Our singer forget all the lyrics to the first verse of "Tilting" and the foot switch for the backing was doing some weird things that required manual intervention at the computer. Despite all of that we went down really well and sold an unfeasible amount of T-shirts and CDs including loads of copies of our brand new single "Robert Smith's Eyes". Obligatory photos: Next gig is Carpe Noctum on 10th May at The Lending Room in Leeds supporting Faces Of Sarah.

Going off on a slight tangent, have you tried adjusting the stock pickup closer to the strings? There's a sweet spot for Jazz pickups, usually about 3-4mm from the bottom of the string to the pole pieces on the bridge pickup, and around 5-6mm on the neck pickup. That can make a huge amount of difference to your sound before you start any modifications.
