Struggling with sound engineering guitarist
lemmywinks replied to mrtcat's topic in General Discussion
We used to have a guy do our sound at big gigs, had his own PA hire and sound engineering company. He was a drummer and every mix was drum heavy, not by any extreme measure but noticeable and it got on my nerves. Our guitarist at the time used to do a few jobs for him when he was unavailable and some of those bands would request him instead as they preferred his stage and FoH mix which was always really well balanced (to my ears anyway). A bit like there always being one punter who will tell you something is too loud and another who will tell you the same thing is too quiet. -

Not at all, as a band we're all happy. I think the point you're possibly overlooking is that nothing in this is about an identifiable and quantifiable 'best/ideal/optimal sound', it's about how expectations differ among people, and how those expectations affect perception and emotion. It sounds like the rest of your band might have agreed with you in principle, but don't share your expectations that it shouldn't happen, so they aren't worried when it does happen again. Re my bunch, we don't have any problem with our guitarist simply because we don't expect him to turn down, it's him (and there are plenty of singers, key's players, drummers, and bassists who are just the same who nonetheless get on with their bands without friction), and apart from a few of the type of musos who like to scratch their chins at a gig and then come straight up to you at the break and offer some well intentioned feedback, neither does anyone else. So there's no tearing out of hair needed. Is it ideal? No. Is it good enough? Yes. -
Contribution to the tonewood debate - a unique take (Bacci)

Always makes me wonder, when it says 'designed in collaboration with' - when it comes to a FSO, surely the input is 'this pickup, these knobs, that colour, make the pickguard extra ugly'. Hardly 'design', is it? -

I’d like to reserve judgement until playing one, but given the price it’s highly unlikely. Anyway, it’s lunchtime and for some reason I fancy a bit of Edam cheese…….. -
Sounds like you need to have a grown up conversation with your guitarist 🤣

Who will the guy listen to? Not the rest of the band apparently, not the punters (what would they know about mixing?), so can you get an expert in to ‘work on your live sound’? If it’s a matter of making the gigs bearable for you, then being able to set your own IEM mix could be a win. -
You know, when I got mine a couple of years ago, I thought about getting a (non-aged) pearl pickguard done, but never got round to it. So... I might join this bandwagon. What's the best way of contacting Brian these days - still through Ebay?

Agreed, which I think is why it's best to simply tolerate it. I think our guitarist is way too loud, but he's a great guy and a great player so I tolerate it. At gigs musicians tend to say 'He's too loud' while punters tend to say 'He's a great guitarist'. Everyone has a different perspective/expectation, as bass players we're often just as bad as most other band members. Note the most....... -

There have been many times in my life, including now, when the bass I’m carrying is worth more than the car it is in…having said that, can I charge more for dings, which are asynchronous unintended organic tone divots? -

Sterling StingRay Shortscale A great little short scale bass for the money, plays and sounds fantastic - really captures that StingRay growl using a passive pickup. It is all original except the machine-heads which I replaced with Hipshots. The reason being I found it a wee bit headstock heavy. The eagle eyed will spot that one is a USA version and this is because the Hipshot licensed tuners I had in my spares box are none reversible. The bass weighs an astonishing 3.1kgs so great for those with bad backs or shoulders. I don’t think there were many imported in this black and maple finish and it certainly has that classic StingRay look. I had a single ply black scratchplate on it for a time however it is supplied with the original faux tortoiseshell. Nice low action, fresh D’Addario 45-100 nicklewound strings. No gigbag but I have a Sterling box should you require it posting. Selling because I have been buying far too much! Postage UK only at buyer’s cost. I can knock off a few ££ if you want me to put the original tuners back on.

Will Basschat survive the Online Safety Act?

Tort anything ought to be considered a war crime so if I'm ever appointed as the head of the ICC that will get a lot of people in a lot of trouble. 10 years in the dilithium mines at least! -
I was tempted to go back and edit the post so that @King Tut, @Geek99 and @Franticsmurf all have "most excellent" 5 string basses, but that would confuse future generations reading this thread.
