  2. Snagged a BR6. It’s 20 years old. Plays like butter. Has the old 9v preamp. I just love it. It’s so articulate and has the sound I have been wanting. Super easy to punch through a mix with miss and not sizzle highs. Spent some time cleaning it, getting the neck and bridge tweaked and it’s singing now. Feeling pretty spoiled with a sadowsky 5 and a smith 6 but I’ve been playing most of my life and wanted these instruments since i started as a kid. was considering an F bass or fedora but I just prefer the smith tone at the end of the day.

  4. Count on going through a couple till you get it right. My first 5 was a disaster. But it showed me enough to go and find what wasn't. You're going to need to figure out what balances for you. What string spacing you need. And most of all... What B string works best for "you". Switching from 4 to 5 can cause confusion if you're not use to it. I've played nothing but 5 for the last 15 years. 4's feel funny. You have a need for a 5 you're looking at the woodshed. The end result is more than worth it. But your first 5 you should try before you buy. Especially if you are new to it.
  5. When I had to commute daily in the pre COVID times, there was a lady busker at Bond Street Underground station. She was absolutely terrible, which surprised me as you have to pass an audition to get a busking license on TfL property. I only had to endure a few minutes each day of her, but I shudder to think what her amplified caterwauling was doing to the station staff.
  6. so Fiasco Jam went well - shook the ring rust, did 15 songs…only 3 took a second run. I think that shows that all the work we’d done in 2024 was worth it. Hopefully album starts in the next month. did another “just bodies” tonight. New song called “Shadows” which was sent to me and drummer this morning was learned during the day - really awkward downstroke strumming pattern (not my comfort zone…) but we definitely got it near to “right” after 4 plays through, just listening back to it now.
  7. There's a variety of Ibanezes to be found at that sort of price, and a few Corts. Sub Ray5 HH on your list is also good, nice neck. Could you elaborate on "ergonomics" as judging by what you've said about the Ray5 you actually mean compact. If that's what you're after, have a look for an SGC Nanyo Bass Collection eg https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1865927017481227/ - small body and headstock, nice players.
  8. If you are desperate you can take the neck off and put the body in your hand luggage case and bubble wrap the neck and hold that like a souvenir. I did that with my fretless a couple of months ago and it worked a treat! I have used a box that is 126 x 42 x 15, so well above the allowed dimensions, and it was fine. I have also used Hiscox and other hard cases without an eyelid being batted. On various airlines. I don't think anyone wants to get the tape measure out, they are more worried about weight. I would risk it, smile and feign ignorance!
  9. This thing is killer
  10. For sale My Hartke Hydrive 410 in very good condition with a roqsolid cover. Lightweight Neo cab on removable casters so it's even easier to transport. A versatile cab in my opinion, it has coped admirably with several genre changes along the way. Horn attenuation on the rear panel to add or reduce sparkle. Collection much preferred but postage possible. Cheers.
  11. Yup, C1-6 begin to roll off the tone at about 16MHz 😉 C17 will isolate the input stage from the +v rail and any nasties thereon, eg 100Hz ripple or any DC variation as big currents into speaker drag it down.
  12. That's really nice. Congrats! Has it got the same Japanese split coil with the reverse thread height adjustment screws as the Mexican/American ones? I bought a used American Performer Mustang a couple of weeks ago and love it. It's a perfect tonic to play as house bass player at a Sunday jam I do after a long distance Saturday tribute show with a Jazz strapped to me for two hours.
  13. I'm liking the extra large volume control

  15. A fantastic overdrive from Spaceman. What really makes it unique is that it has a resonant filter that allows you to create big filter sweeps when used with an expression pedal. It’s not quite as dramatic as a dedicated resonant low pass filter but still produces really nice sweeps. In excellent to mint condition and includes box and shiny space bag…for cables, miscellaneous plecs, space rocks etc. Price also includes shipping or you’re more than happy to collect from Reading/London. This is what Spaceman have to say: Polaris is a dynamic medium-gain overdrive, with incredibly flexible tone-shaping capabilities. Featuring a 2-pole resonant filter, fully controllable via expression pedal for filter sweeps and out-of-this-world overdrive tones. Zach Rizer offers a great overview including the resonant filter section: Pics: And Spaceman’s own demos:

  16. I'm going to give my usual recommendation for VFM five stringers - Cort Artisan Space Bass 5. You can get a really nice used one for around £500. There's nothing better for the money. FishFaceFour has a Cort Artisan B5 in a lovely red stain for sale on these hallowed pages, which uses the same Bartolini Pickups and MarkBass preamp for about £400. Good luck with your search!
  17. This PCB has a Ruetz that's handled by a trimpot, I think I tried that already, but will give it another go. I used Fuzzdog's own PCB. And I thought the same about the IC and VA, but the breadboard version does not do this crazy distortion on leg 7, neither does my other (non-operational) Fuzzdog PCB attempt. It's only this latest version that very angrily distorts on that specific leg. And the same A100K pot works completely fine on the breadboard, no short operational range there. Now my mum is visiting so have limited time, but I'll measure some more voltages, probe some audio at various points, and will try to play more with the Ruetz trim. Also, I still haven't fully tested the first attempt, which failed somewhere else. If all else fails, I got 2 more PCBs I can give a try...
  18. It’s just buttons 4 and 5 via the expression socket to select presets.
  19. Eagerly awaiting those sound clips!
  20. Oh my god, this must be able to make every simple sound in existence. I just passed on that C4 as I just got the same bass envelope filter 😅 and here you are, running both, I'm so jealous
  21. C1-C6 do look like hf stability to my rusty eye, maybe even a slight tonal rolloff? C17 seems to be just dropping the voltage a bit (and a bit of extra filtering) - it's the same AC load .
  22. Aw mate, I really appreciate that!
