They look like modified Hipshot D-style bridges, with different saddles and forfeiting the usual tailpiece: 4 String D Style Bass Bridge Really interesting idea!

OP may want to check out some of the information on the thread below. Personally my preference is the SMX amps, but I think this is more for nostalgic reasons in that they were "the" amp at the time I was 18 and unable to afford one! I had a Mark V AH250 for a while but it was too heavy to be practical and I also didn't like how the little green buttons used to stick.

How was Your rehearsal last morning or night ?
dmccombe7 replied to nilorius's topic in General Discussion
Because we don't rehearse much i actually quite enjoy them. We all bring sandwiches and juice or coffee and sit and have a chat for a while in the middle where we catch up on what each has been doing and gossip really. Its a close as i get to hanging out with a bunch of mates like the old days when i was young After one new song by ABBA which i thought was pretty standard stuff for any bass player the guitarist told me i'm the first bassist that he hasn't had to show how to play the bass line in that particular song. He said the same with Wizard Wish It Could be Xmas Everday when we first did it. Maybe because my background is in Prog / Jazz-rock i just find them relatively easy. ? Dave -

Barefaced SuperMini review from a blind player's perspective
JGSpector posted a topic in Amps & Cabs
This review covers the SuperMini speaker cabinet from UK manufacturer Barefaced. I have owned a few different Barefaced cabs over the years but I now own a SuperMini so felt that it would only be fair to review a cab I still own and use on a regular basis. Disclaimer: I’m just a dude who gigs in a few projects and bands for fun, I am by no means a professional reviewer. All views are my own and I have not received any payment or other incentives to write this piece. Overview. I’m a huge fan of what Barefaced do and I have to say, getting a SuperMini has not changed that. I have owned a SuperTwin, a BigBaby III, a SuperCompact and a 210 and they were all absolutely fantastic cabs that made me smile every time I played through them. I did also have a SuperMidget at one point, which is what the SuperMini used to be called, but I rather stupidly sold it to help fund a new bass or something, yep, you guessed it, GAS again. Around the same time that Barefaced renamed the SuperMidget to SuperMini, they also made it available in two versions, the SuperMini which doesn’t have a tweeter and the SuperMini T which does have a tweeter. I hardly ever used the tweeter on the SuperMidget I had owned previously anyway, so the standard SuperMini appealed to me for several reasons. Mainly because I knew it would sound great but also its small size and weight due to it not having a tweeter really fit with what I need in the real world when it comes to a cab. Small but mighty. The SM is a 3rd generation 12XN model and the build quality, just like the other 12XN models I’ve owned is impressive. It’s incredibly well put together, tidy, very compact and looks awesome. It’s also comically lightweight. All of the 12XN models come with a black powder coated steel grill as standard but there is an option to have the cab built with a high strength silver or black cloth grill. The cloth grill saves some weight compared to the metal grill version as you would expect and the non tweeter version is around 1kg lighter than the version with the tweeter. The quality of sound is superb. Clear, responsive, punchy with nice tight lows and smooth highs. I pretty much always play 5 string basses these days and it handles the low B with ease as well as octave and envelope filter effects. I really like the tight lows as they seem to have more definition but I guess that’s more of a personal preference thing. I play in a rock covers band, a metal/atmospheric instrumental band and a function band. The SM works wonderfully in all three without breaking a sweat. What I particularly like is that, as with all of the 12XN models, whatever sound you put in is what comes out, just louder. I use an amp with a tube pre amp for the covers and instrumental bands and with the instrumental band I tend to use a fair amount of fuzz, octave and chorus. For the function band I use a pure solid state amp but also use chorus, octave, envelope filter, a little overdrive and fuzz, not all at the same time obviously but depending on the song. Because I’m playing all sorts of different sounds and styles the SMs ability to handle them all works brilliantly for me. Cab Specifics. Height: 17.5”. Width: 16.5”. Depth: 11”. Weight: 8.5kg (Cloth grill no tweeter), 9.5kg (metal grill no tweeter), 9.5kg (cloth grill with tweeter), 10.5kg (metal grill with tweeter). Max amp power: 600w RMS. Max output: 127db. Frequency range: 37Hz - 20KHz. Impedance: 8ohm. As a side note, you can even use the version with a tweeter as a high quality PA speaker by turning the tweeter all the way up. Barefaced sell top hat stands for this purpose. Summary. I’ve been using Barefaced cabs since 2017 and I haven’t looked back. They sound fantastic, have a small stage footprint, are easy to move and look great. For the bands I play in these days I just don’t need the big double 12XN cabs like the BigTwin III or SuperTwin. Even the larger single 12XN models don’t quite fit my needs these days because of their size compared to the SM, particularly when 2 SuperMinis will give me more than enough output for the larger gigs that I play whilst giving me a modular solution. The SuperMini whilst not able to give quite such deep lows as its bigger brothers the SuperCompact and BigBaby III, does produce tight thick clear lows that still beat larger cabs produced by other manufacturers. The fact that the SuperMini is small, weighs next to nothing but can handle up to 600w and just one of them can easily keep up with a loud band makes it a no brainer for me at this stage. Can it do massive lows like a BigBaby III can, not quite, but the lows it does are more than suitable for my needs. series/split/parallel but with a DPDT on/on switch and a pot...?
Danage replied to Danage's topic in Repairs and Technical
Close, I've clearly explain things badly! The switch would be an DPDT on/on switch, so only two positions, which would be series and parallel. The idea is to get all of the series/split/parallel options, but also with the ability to blend out one coil in the humbucker modes. Also this would allow the use of a push-pull pot. In series the signal flow would be: Coil A > volume control > switch > coil B > volume control > output In parallel the signal flow would be Coil A > volume control > switch > volume control > output Coil B > switch > volume control > output I think I've got it figured out - I could get the additional volume control to work in both series and parallel modes by attaching it to the same lug on the DPDT as where the output of coil A goes. To get it to only make an effect in series mode, I just need to attach it to where that same lug connects to when in series mode. If I have time at the weekend I'll just tack a pot on to my existing series/parallel switch setup and have it dangling out the back of the control cavity to see if it is any use. Danage. -
That's the other application for me - A near-Status when I don't want to take a Status to a particular venue. Again, my only complaint with the Space Basses is the output is a little low - about equal to a passive Jazz bass, but that's sortable by turning up the gain.

Sorry Chris! My scepticism may be terribly misplaced but I’m struggling with this one -
Active basses have never sounded right to my ears with overdrive.

I’m a big fan of these pickups, but now that I’m keeping my Fender Active Flea I’ve added a neck pickup to my trusty Stingray and gone back to alnico pickups, so this is not needed anymore. The Classic series is brighter than the Original series, but retains the lush smooth Bartolini tone. I personally feel like the Classic is the best all rounder. These are ceramic, and therefore deeper than an alnico MM pickup. The back has some sign of wear, my mistake, as when I first I put it in my Ray I forgot to put in the foam, so it got marked due to my DIY drill-routing. One of the wires detached, so the wires needed soldering to fix it, but it's working great - so just don't forget the foam to protect the exposed wires! I may even have some foam I can throw in if you need it. Postage included. Cheers

My gig last night was a recording session for which I was the engineer. My mate has opened a small studio where he records his music school students, so it's mainly acoustic guitar and singers. His initial attempt to record were, in his own words, rubbish (well, actually he used non-Basschat language which I have translated) so he asked me in to do it properly. Having been recording myself and bands for years (I started on small Fostex 4 track cassette in the late 80's and went through an 8 track reel-to-reel machine and various digital hard disk recorders), I have some experience. Last night was a beginner singer/guitarist who wanted to record a CD's worth of cover songs so it was a relatively simple set up. He wanted to sing and play at the same time, which made getting separation from guitar and voice impossible and he kept moving around, so trying to get a consistent sound was hard. We managed to get through about half of his list before his voice gave out and he started to struggle nailing some of the guitar parts. After he'd gone, my mate explained that he was in his 90s. He didn't look it, and my admiration for his performance went up a notch or two.
