Ok I have 2 Hb They have both been fitted with the stingerpreamp and Kent Armstrong musician Alclino pickups I have Yamaha BBP35 and an American pro 2 p bass Both the Harley’s cost just over £100 the stinger preamps are around £70 Kent Armstrong supplies a couple of different Musicman style pick ups have a look on there website they sound excellent I have a musicman 2 eq if anything the HB are better sounding

as a resident of Nottingham I feel duty bound to say that Robin Hood is more likely to be true than Nessie, or blowing speakers by turning an amp up to distortion levels by the 'sounds' of it. But hiding in the Major Oak or robbing from the rich to give to the poor probably as big a myth as the other two

Texas has a bit of an "exceptionalism" thing going on - in most places in the US, you see the American flag flying outside peoples' houses. In Texas, you're more likely to see the "lone star" state flag. They regularly threaten secession from the union and think they're better than the rest of the US. They're kinda the "Brexit Britain" of the US. Austin is a cool city - been there a few times. One of my favourite places over here. And it's very different from the Texas stereotype - young, progressive, geek-friendly, music everywhere, people bike and use public transport (they have a decent light rail system), and so on. Great food too - proper authentic Mexican food, Texas BBQ, good steaks, and surprisingly good Indian food! As a Brit in the US, it's also nice because they have a good football team (Austin FC), Nando's and a decent British pub (run by Brits) that does a Full English and a good Sunday lunch! But you don't have to go far out of Austin to be reminded where you are - miles and miles of nothing, megachurches, people in the biggest, most jacked-up pickup trucks you've ever seen (all the big car manufacturers make special Texas-only models!), people carrying guns, and so on.

Very nice indeed. This is something I thought about doing and even looked at putting a fretless neck on the yellow Mike Dirnt when I had one. he pickups are awesome and the original Mike Dirnt neck is a baseball bat so it would have made it quite playable with a fretless neck.

You have it backwards. SS amps are more linear. What you are describing is the tube amp starts to saturate and "compress" more when turned up. That provides a bit of a cushion to the sound whereas the Class D amp will just get louder. With SS amps there is no output transformer. The wattage changes with impedance. See the specs for our 1000 watt Class D dUg Ultra. 1000 Watts RMS minimum, @ 4Ω 600 Watts RMS minimum, @ 8Ω 300 Watts RMS minimum, @ 16Ω Many commercial SS amps are rated at 2 Ohms because that's the biggest number. The only time I ever blew up a power amp was running at 2 ohms.

Actually it is. From the spec sheet. Wattage 200W into 4Ω (Simulates 85W Tube Amp Performance) Speakers Two - 12" Jensen® N-12K Neo Total Impedance 4 ohms It makes sense. You want more available headroom when using the SS amp vs the tube amp. Coming from the sound reinforcement side of things the basic rule of thumb was always doubling the amount of power in relation to speaker wattage. ie 1000 watt of speakers use at least a 2000 watt power amp. I found this out the hard way by constantly blowing tweeters in my PA tops because I was using an underpowered power amp. With musical instrument amps it usually goes the other way. A 300 watt SVT is paired with an 800 watt 8X10. A 100 watt Marshall will be used with a cab rated at 200-300 watts. Of course this begs the question what is accomplished with with all that complex stuff under the hood? A lighter, less expensive amp that has more flexibility and no maintenance other than software updates. The repair and reliability is hard to quantify at this point. Digital amps usually can't be easily field serviced. If the processor goes out it needs to be replaced etc. We do some repairs on the Class D power amp modules in our amps but it's usually more cost effective to replace the module. While tubes became an obsolete tech in the 1950-60's and have their own set of drawbacks they are still being made. The original Line 6 AxSys 212 which came out in 1996 is no longer supported by Line 6 and can be very difficult if not impossible to repair and yet my '66 Fender Bassman lives on.

I don't think so. If that were the case loads of us would be blowing cabs all over place. For example, someone running a Trace Elliot Elf into an 8 ohm cab rated at 400w is only using the Elf at its 8 ohm power rating of 130w. There are dozens of players who do that and i doubt any of them have blown their cabs doing so. I'm not a tech guy but my understanding is that the power rating of a cab is the maximum power it can take within its limitations. So running 2000w flat out into a cab rated at 400w probably wouldn't be the best idea in the world, but running an Elf into that same cab would be fine as the Elfs power rating is less than the maximum that the cab can take.

Just had a follow up from my MP who apparently sent my concerns to the Secretary of State. I'm not sure the reply really says anything we didn't already know though.

The Bugera PCBs won't be involved in my build. I'll be making my own eyelet board - the layout will use some aspects of the original, but modified to accommodate the smoothing capacitors which Fender used to put in a separate 'dog house'.

The TC head will be Class D amp and the Sound City ‘old school’. A different class that someone more knowledgeable than me can explain. Any ‘new’ (class D) amp will need to be several times the wattage of your SCs 120w to produce the same sort of power. There are lots of threads here explaining the ‘details’. For your particular problem I would have thought ‘more watts & turn down’ would be the way to go. But beware that you need to make sure bandmates don’t ’helpfully turn your rig up’ thus blowing a speaker.
