I had the same dilemma. Do I spend £400 improving the sound of a £200 bass My lightbulb moment was to buy a Sadowsky preamp for £50 (other preamp pedals are available). This has improved the tone 1000%.

Lots of good things happening there then

Mokl started following Lollar JB Pickups in place of EMGs?
-
Either what Lozz said, or try some cheaper pickups and see what you think? I put a Tonerider in the neck position of my 70s Jazz as getting a bit broke but wanted to replace the ole DiMarzio bridge pup someone had shoehorned in there. I should qualify this by saying that I've never been shy of spending on gear. I want expecting much, but it honestly sounds excellent.

After so many years and so many amps the GR Bass range is so transparent and clean. https://www.grbass.com/portfolio/one/

Lozz196 started following Lollar JB Pickups in place of EMGs?

If it were a bass I liked and wanted to keep & play regularly then yes I’d spend on it to get it where I wanted it. I know full well from experience if it didn’t sound as I wanted I’d rarely pick it up, so if I were in your situation to me that would be £600 well spent overall rather than £400 wasted.

I used to play this in a band at college. Great Fun. Yngwie's solo in this shows just hiw unworldly Alan Holdsworth was!
-
Many good suggestions here. I also have an AG700 which is a fantastic amp, and very clean and uncoloured, but seems to me that they designed the TH500 to be on the same wave length as the Precision bass. It enhances the Precision-ness of the bass perfectly.

Bass Wielder started following Newtone Double Ball string sets (37”)
-
All unused, top quality sets. Double ball ends but possibly can be used for shorter basses. 37” length. (I could use the outer strings on my standard scale bass but would rather sell as sets). * Newtone 5 string sets x 6: Diamond Bass, hex core, stainless steel, 46-130, length 37” (ball end to ball end) with tapered B. £25 each (discount for multi purchase) ( I also have a Hot Wires 5 string flat wound set…pm me)

....although what I will tell you is that it is a Warmoth Precision that is so ludicrously underweight that it has a contract with a Paris model agency for the Autumn catwalk season

Lord Sausage started following Yngwie shreds on bass
-
He plays fretless on a lot of his stuff. There is some shredding on this I think.

That's a cracker

All in good time my friend.........., all going well all nine should be in the public domain by close of play tomorrow 👍

Beedster, what's that dark coloured 'bitsa in the middle of the box with the very flamed neck? (Third from left.)

Anyone bought a cheap (Chinese) neck off eBay?
police squad replied to NancyJohnson's topic in Bass Guitars
It's just a body that john sprayed the wrong colour and let me have it cheap to make the red Sting fretless The paint wasnt even flattened and polished It has a fender 63 pickup in it and sounds amazing Just shy of 10 pounds in weight -
My Activer One10 arrived this week. My rig is almost complete apart from trying different pre-amps. I currently have it running with a Sansamp BDDI mk2 and I am liking the sound with all three cabs. All 3 work together really well. Very growly. A single One10, either the Activier or a passive cab with a gnome, sounds a bit thin but I believe that's due to the hard accoustics of the room. I've used One10s live and they are fine. The new cab however is winding up my OCD as the Activier One10 does not match the two previous cabs. The handle is on the opposite side and the new logo is .... Hmmm. xs2bibla.bmp

First up, maple FL Precision, Shuker neck that is rather wonderful, 70's Daion MIJ body that has that 'I'm genuinely old and not reliced' vibe, EMG Geezers, and yes, LOLLIPOPS It's not a responder so the Badass is coming off to be replaced by a nice 70's RI BBOT

It’s great, it’s Muff-based but it’s far better than original Big Muffs IMO. It doesn’t scoop out the mids, it keeps the low end and there’s loads of gain available. Fuzzy grind with definition. I used it on guitar for years and just kept it on my board when I went back to playing bass, and it’s just as good now.

Got this Hamer Chaparral Bass two years ago. I like it Made 1991 I believe. Aftermarket Seymour Duncan pickups, not the original EMGs. I found it in the classifieds here locally (Iceland). It was left for some time without a bag or case in a loft of a youth center. The janitor looked for it with me on every floor until we found it behind an old drum set on the top floor. The owner was out of town at the time and needed the janitors help in finding it. From the moment I played it unplugged with old strings it was clear that this is a quality instrument, it resonates and plays well. I would love to own a Cruise bass, I remember when version 2 came out and got a perfect review in Bass Player.

The GR Bass One range would definitely fit the bill. Very flat uncoloured natural sound with the eq enabled and also has the Pure button which takes the whole eq out of the signal channel so you're straight in the front and straight out of the back. I recently sold one as it was a bit too uncoloured for my personal taste. Great features though with the onboard tuner and 9v output https://www.grbass.com/portfolio/one/ From some of the suggestions listed above I also have experience of the Genzler Magellan 800 and its a lovely amp. Really nice build quality and features and one of the best Class D that I have used. It's not an uncolored amp but it can do a clean sound very easily. I have a Quilter BB800 and thats definitely not uncoloured - it's very good at doing huge clean uncompressed volume but doesn't have a natural clear sparkle to it - the top end can feel a bit muted although not dark. It would work well if you needed a lot of volume and used it as a power amp with a preamp of your choice though. Maybe you should add an EBS Reidmar to the list too...
