  2. ...Just a bit of fun. Descriptions seen in ads that maybe true but are faintly ridiculous. (I'm not pleading innocence here by the way) I'll start with... 1. Plays like butter (often spelt buttah) 2. Never been gigged (never really seen the point of that one) 3. All original (so what if it's as good a bass you're telling me it is) 4. Bought it new for £1300 a week ago. (Take it back to the shop) 5.?

  11. Another idea would be to set up a custom search of the kind of content that does interest you, then save it as a custom stream and make it your homepage. There are no sidebars on those pages.

  12. @BigRedX I will probably look at creating a lightweight theme in the coming weeks. There seems to be some demand for it, part of the problem is some people want everything on the screen, others want a minimal amount and it's not easy to cater for both

  13. Was Andy Irvine the originator of the reference to butter? I know he always claimed it aplied to every Warwick he picked up. The other one I don't get is "plays itself".

  19. Had a load of really good suggestions for semi hollow or hollow basses to fill a hole (ha!) I've had for a while. Checked them all out, and was left feeling pretty meh. The main issues were: - Short scale (I want 34") - Silly slim nut width (I like 45mm) - Odd pickup combos (not sure I have use for a neck mudbucker) - Availability (as in I'd need to find one used and they are as rare as rocking horse droppin's) So, I dropped my fave secret squirrel parts maker a message on the off chance. And he does do semi-hollow. He sent me this teaser: So an order spec went in double quick, given my second PJ build is currently on hiatus whilst I get some lacquer checking on it! What are we looking at then? - 51 P style body (slab) chambered (as above) - f-hole - No pickguard - going with vol, tone and jack on the front and that's it - Trad 51 P style pickup rout - I will probably get a split coil pickup custom wound for it - vintage output to emphasise the semi-hollow body tone - Traditional bridge - Swamp ash body and cap - Maple neck, Rosewood board - 45mm nut, slim front to back - Tele style headstock - Ultralight tuners Should be with me in time for Christmas, so something to do over the hols Will update as I go, but in the meantime I need to gather parts and decide how to finish it.

  20. Having decided that my goal of being in a regular gigging band is no longer going to happen, after over 20 years of trying, I've reconciled myself to just enjoying my bass playing at home. I could write a book on the misadventures of my 'career' as a musician I've sold my gigging cab and amp. I've a couple of pedals on sale here too (cheap plug). I've gathered a huge collection of assorted books over the years as well as leads, straps and other odds and ends. I'm amazed at just how many books I've gathered. I've now got to sort though boxes upon boxes of CDs for them and I'll sort them and put them up for sale with heavy discounts on bulk buying. I've still got 7 basses, I used to have 27!

  23. A bog standard (if there ever was one) J-Retro comes factory preset at all the right places. Very musical preamp. John clearly knows a thing or two about designing great preamps. I discussed with him briefly over email about his J-Retro with "Marcus voicing". Decided to go for standard voicing on my DJ-Retro. I really like the flexibility of the mid-sweep and the pull bright switch of the J-Retro design. It does have a gentle EQ curve built in though. If you don't want that coloured sound already added the J-Tone may be the one for you. Whichever one you choose you will not be disappointed.

  31. On the same subject - can you retrospectively react to posts from pre-new-site-changeover? If so, thanks a bunch admins. I'm now going to have to go back through all the posts on this site and like the ones I liked at the time but couldn't react to them. There goes my week. Great.

  33. Man I hate this. They have it on SBL. Hopefully it will be ok here (with the higher average age.) It all gets stupid when quantity of likes gets taken as a member rank. SBL even posts who got most likes in the past month... urghhh. Can we please establish here and now. I'm an unsociable got and I don't like anyone.

  34. I think the key words here are 'released shortly after'. It seemed a lifetime for the GED2112 to drop...10-12 months, while the wait was worth it, I only have so many 10-12 months left!

  37. The age old problem is that these things are subjective. Also change is hard, change management is even harder. My subjective opinion is that the design is cleaner, clearer and easier to read

  38. I get on much better with the new layout - the display is cleaner and the fonts seems to be much easier on the eye, though that could be my age! I'm happy with less clutter meaning fewer threads per page but everyone is different I guess.

  40. You might want to try again with the truss rod nut undone (if it has one), use the clamp to get a slight backbow if you can. Then tighten the truss rod nut once you are happy with the relief. Keep an eye on it if you put it in your shed, for a shortish period you should be fine and the damper atmosphere may well help, but don't subject the bass to anything too drastic. Good luck!

  46. You are right to identify the need for a dedicated sound person. That makes one of the advantages of going through the PA less easy to achieve. The advantages of going through the PA are simple enough. Going through the PA means someone out where the audience are can balance the sound for them meaning the whole band sound better. Secondly any sound going on behind the mic line will be picked up by the vocal mics, including your bass. This muddies up the sound going through the PA and means you can never get a clean vocal feed. Then there is the issue of the sound level on stage. High levels damage your hearing long term and make it difficult for us to really hear each other well. Singers are often forced to belt out their vocals straining their voices and making it far harder to sing with any inflection or subtlety just to be heard over the racket. Without any help from the PA you have no choice about volume, it has to be loud enough for the audience. The only advantage of not going through the PA is simplicity. No mics or Di's means less to go wrong and setting up is simple enough for all to understand. Turn up until you are loud enough to match the drums and no-one is louder than each other and then just play. The balance will be the same for every song and whist it might not be perfect it shouldn't be too far out if every band member is sensible. This only works though in small venues if one of the instruments won't reach the back of a big venue you've pretty much got to accept low sound values or all go through the PA.
