  1. I certainly DID read the notification about backing up PM's because all messages will be lost. That's why I have, you know, backed up my PM's before the switch over date. BassChat did it's best to let everyone know. I managed to get the message ok and I was under piles and piles of vomit these last couple of weeks.

  5. Honestly, I don't mind the feedback. I know there are things to clean up and sort and I'll do all I can, if I still had hair I would be pulling it out. Thing is though, I saw this forum software before all the issues and once the performance cracks on it'll fly along and is a lovely smooth experience. Some stuff I didn't anticipate I'll try to add in as long as it doesn't clutter things up or slow it down too much. The nicest thing for everyone involved will be the fact that now we have supported software where we're in the driving seat, if there's a popular feature that people want then we can look into that! Ultimately, we love the forum and it's the members that make it up, it's nothing without our community after all.

  6. This is easy, for two reasons. Reason 1 - The Birdies Song (Portsmouth Radical Club 24/12/1978) Reason 2 (same night) - a member of the audience (dancing to the same number) died on the dance floor. Over to you, everyone! :-)

  9. New site is beautiful and a pleasure to use , well done! Pity about the PMs - they were useful for sale & trade history. Fortunately I managed to find most of my conversations in my gmail, using search term: basschat personal conversation May be helpful to others

  10. I'd like to just say thanks for all of the efforts in improving site. Having worked on system upgrades for the last 20 years I know how difficult they can be and the problems faced. Hopefully the majority of users won't be impacted by the lost pm's and can appreciate the benefits of the new features.

  17. Dear Basschatter, Welcome to the new updated website. I just wanted to mention a few things you might like to read before getting stuck in. Please read on to find out more - and as ever, ask us if you have any questions! Enjoy! Here are some of the main new features: You'll find things are easier to keep track of, using the 'Activity' tab. You can even save your own custom streams such as 'New topics in Basses for sale in the last 7 days' as well as your standard options for new content, replies to your own topics and followed threads. A better search. Fine tune your results and find what you're after. The search is now 100% reliable whereas the old site had some issues with indexing. The BC shop. Here you can buy marketplace subs - you can manage your purchases to see when they expire. Having a sub will allow you to create marketplace posts as before, but now it'll say how long you have left (on a £20 sub) or how many single use (£7) tokens you have left. Renewal prices have been dropped for returning customers. We'll be offering special discounts at various times of year and give away subscription voucher codes to members for contributing to the community, for example b organising a Basschat Bash. We're working on a system where you'll be rewarded for referring a new user to the forum. The BC shop will be selling a whole range of items at exclusive BC prices - coming soon. We now accept PayPal and Stripe (card payment gateway, soon after launch) All new user support system for getting help when you need it Attachments have been totally revised - now you have 500MB of space to upload pictures. No faffing about, you can upload by drag+drop. Attachments are displayed at full resolution, scaled for the browser. Notifications now appear in real time (if you grant permission). Notification emails (if chosen) are sent when a reply is made to a topic you've subscribed to, not every single time someone replies - although you can adjust your preferences to suit your own working method. New tagging system. We'll encourage people to add a few tags to their post, because the system will find similar content and display it at the side for further reading. Tag a user into a conversation and they'll get an alert to come and have a look. Simply use @ followed by their username, like on Facebook etc Improved mobile interface. Also, resizing the window on a computer will bring up the mobile site if you make it narrow enough - ideal for multiple window viewing or less than obvious use at work! Send sticky notes to other members, or yourself Have a play, get stuck in and please be patient whilst the site gets back up to speed Cheers ped A quick note about PMs Unfortunately PMs couldn't be ported to the new site because they're in a completely different format. Whilst we did everything we could to tell people, it appears some had not seen the announcements and the email we sent in the two weeks leading up to the move. The email was sent to every active member (logged in during the last 365 days) on the 18th October. There were also threads in Off Topic and the new 'Please Read' category with information in there. My actual words were probably not strong enough because at that point I wasn't 100% sure and nobody seemed to raise any issues about it during the few weeks it was running, but I said "I'm Pretty sure PMs will transfer no problem, but probably a good idea to get copies of anything important just in case". The other message I posted in Off Topic was more directed very clear but it was only a couple of days before we moved so possibly too late for some. Again, I probably perceived the lack of replies as it not being an issue. Looking back, that probably wasn't good enough and I'm sorry. One of the main reasons we had to migrate was that the old software stopped being supported in 2014, so behind the scenes we were pasting over cracks and you will have noticed things like spam appearing on the site. Frankly we're all surprised the site wasn't badly compromised by a bot but we go lucky but we were on borrowed time. There was a massive lack of options for us to get in touch with everyone. We couldn't make an announcement (the best I could do was make a new forum at the top of the site with the 'Please Read' title) and the mass email system may not have reached everyone if they opted out of emails. I know it reached lots of people because many replied, but still. Now, we can post a note and everyone sees it when they visit. So given the options I did all I could. Again I'm really sorry if you missed it, and I fully appreciate why you might have done so. All I ask is that you please try and empathise with Rik and I who have been working tirelessly to bring you the best we can. Rik in particular has been doing nothing else for months now and has managed an incredible amount in very difficult circumstances, going form an old unsupported platform without support to a new piece of software. So please consider this a personal apology about the PM thing. I hope most of you can simply strike up conversations again and pick up where you left off, but if you did lose anything really critical, let us know and we can dig around in the old database and see if we can find it. You never know, once we've got a bit of time to work on it we may yet find a way to bring them back. On a more positive note we're getting better speed and reliability (we know some people aren't so hang in there) - there are lost of processes going on in the background so please be patient and send us positive vibes, we could use them! Cheers ped

  18. Hi all - I was working through @geoffbassist's lesson on playing Chamber Mates with the bow - I found the rhythm a bit tricky so I had a go at transcribing the head. Here's the transcription if anyone's interested and please let me know if there are any mistakes as I'm no expert when it comes to dots. I posted this to the Theory forum as well but I took the liberty of posting here as it's a good example of something to play with the bow. Cheers Chamber Mates.pdf

  19. There's a lovely guy based in the Cotswolds called Gerry Watkins who has an ongoing mission to set up this thing called The Big Yellow Bus Project...effectively it was a one man crusade to buy a bus, put beds in it and have it as somewhere homeless people could bed down overnight, have something to eat, have a shower, launder their clothes etc. His efforts for fundraising are all his own doing; he's put on gigs and is begging for any help he can to raise money for this (and other projects). My band have already done gigs for him (his efforts raised over a grand for a wheelchair football team earlier in the summer and we're doing a Yellow Bus gig in December). I'm doing all his posters/artwork for gigs. Happily, he raised enough to buy a bus a couple of weeks ago and it's all being refitted with beds and so on. Now then, he's putting on a gig in Cirencester on 2/12/17 and the guys who were providing the PA (free) have taken a paying gig, so he needs a PA for the day. Oh, for free. Whoever provides will get their name stencilled on the bus and an immense feeling of wellbeing. Anyone know anyone who have a PA he could loan for the day? If yes, please shoot me a message and I'll forward on detail to Gerry. Thanks

  20. SSL certificate is high priority but we couldn't organise it until the site was already live with the correct server and domain. It's on the list! @ped - if it's not on the list can you put it on the list? ?

  27. This Friday I'll be seeing our fellow basschatter Bobby Kewley playing bass for The Christians & Altered images on a triple bill with Midge Ure! Sunday will be Mr Big at Shep Bush, then hopefully next Friday Cloudbusting (Kate Bush tribute) at Putney. After that, possibly Simply Dan in Raynes Park on the Sunday.... Corduroy in Guildford on the following Friday and then Airrace/Lionheart in Camden on the Saturday! Phew....!!

  28. Sorry, I don't know anyone in the area who would have a PA But I just wanted to say, what a great cause Gerry Watkins has set up This is brilliant news - and I hope it may inspire other people, in other areas of the UK Once again, homelessness is an awful problem, and it's getting worse all the time Well done to you too for getting involved. If I was closer, I'd be drumming up the support of musician pals (I did a homeless charity gig in Merthyr a couple of weeks back, and was pleased to see quite a few turn out to support the event) But this big yellow bus project is a brilliant idea. Hats off to everyone involved, and best of luck with it

  30. Now I realise what's going on I'm happy to let the mods deal with the problems, they'll get there I'm sure. Stop criticising and let them get on with it. (it is a bit of a pi$$er losing all my emails, like John I needed to keep some of mine)

  31. IMHO, this has already crossed the line, where if I was the IT manager, I'd revert this pile of steaming doo-doo, go back to the old software, until such a time as a proper migration can be done, to something "fit for purpose", like vBulletin.

  33. If that is the case, that's disappointing, especially since I raised the issue on the site migration thread (from the old forum) and was assured that the new editor would be even better than the old one. So if I type a post where my BB tags are technically correct but don't give the result I was hoping for how can I edit them so that they do? I know that now most software is so fully featured the only way the writers can justify upgrades is to make it easier to use for the technologically challenged, but it would be nice if the "power user" features could be retained. Besides IMO if someone really wants to be able to use a feature, they really ought to take the time to learn how to make it work for them.

  35. It shouldn't turn into that here as we're not using at a "positive vs negative" marker. It only shows how many times people have liked what you've said or similar If I had enabled the negative reactions I could imagine this getting really silly!

  36. Your access has been sorted mate, something you did (god knows what, I've asked some security bods) triggered a security protocol. I've asked them to look at the settings so that it affects as few members as possible while still blocking the baddies. Sorry for the inconvenience!

  43. Compression is something that I think is widely misunderstood by a lot of people. When used in moderation it is the icing on the cake of a great bass tone, in my opinion of course. Because it isn't an obvious effect as such in the way that something like a drive pedal is, some people (and I'm not saying that you are one of them ) have a tendency to set the compressor so that they can hear it working, at which point you're invariably adding way too much squash to your tone and killing all dynamics. The secret of great compression is to use it in moderation so that the peaks are tamed but you still have dynamic control when you're playing. A little goes a long way. Compression is more obvious in a band mix that it is when it's just the bass in isolation. Once you have found the compression sweet spot, the bass will be more punchy and even across its range in the mix that without any form of compression. I find the best way to find the compression sweet spot is to set it up at a rehearsal while the rest of the band are playing, it is more obvious in the mix and at a louder volume than at in-house levels. I prefer to use my ears rather than any sort of in-built metering in the compressor itself. I used to play a lot with a plectrum and used a touch of compression. These days I play more with my fingers and still use compression and I do think it is more obvious with finger playing that with a plectrum, but it is still a subtle effect to listen out for. As with everything in life, there are people who won't like it and you might just be one of them. Nothing wrong with that at all I personally won't leave home with one

  45. I thought I would post my rambling thoughts on these strings. I was fortunate to have my players circle points made up enough to get a set of NYXL strings back in July, and rather than post first impressions, I thought a long term assessment might be a little more useful. Straight out of the packet (which is pretty amazing in itself) they were very bright and were maybe a tiny higher in tension than my normal Elixirs. the tension was marginal though and they were really nice to play. They are nice smooth strings, quite close to Ernie Ball slinky strings, which was a nice surprise as I have found some of D'Addario's strings a little rough for my liking. The strings went on my Stingray at the end of July and have been through 8 -10 practices and I think 5 hot and sweaty gigs as well as home practice. I have very corrosive sweat and normally deaden strings after a couple of practices and maybe 2 gigs at most. This is the main reason I switched to coated strings. Although the NYXL strings don't claim to be long lasting strings, these have done remarkably well. I have lost a little of the top end off them but easily counteracted that with the EQ on my stingray. In fact I found them overly bright when they went on and I really had to dial the treble down. Great for slap etc but not my kind of every day tone. They have outlasted Ernie Ball's which I love and I would say that they had a little more 'fullness' to them than EB's, I didn't just get lots of top end and low end out of them, there was a lot of midrange presence which was great. All in all these are really great strings, and to be brutally honest that is coming from someone who never really got on well with D'Addario in the past. They are still on the bass and will be doing at least another 2 gigs before I even think about taking them off. They have completely blown me away, I have never known un-coated strings last so long and maintain such a good core tone throughout. They aren't the cheapest of strings, but in this case I would definately say you get what you pay for.
