I certainly DID read the notification about backing up PM's because all messages will be lost. That's why I have, you know, backed up my PM's before the switch over date. BassChat did it's best to let everyone know. I managed to get the message ok and I was under piles and piles of vomit these last couple of weeks.6 points

This thread title sounds like it’s something to do with a purchase from an Anne Summers catalogue. Just sayin’.4 points

Honestly, I don't mind the feedback. I know there are things to clean up and sort and I'll do all I can, if I still had hair I would be pulling it out. Thing is though, I saw this forum software before all the issues and once the performance cracks on it'll fly along and is a lovely smooth experience. Some stuff I didn't anticipate I'll try to add in as long as it doesn't clutter things up or slow it down too much. The nicest thing for everyone involved will be the fact that now we have supported software where we're in the driving seat, if there's a popular feature that people want then we can look into that! Ultimately, we love the forum and it's the members that make it up, it's nothing without our community after all.3 points

This is easy, for two reasons. Reason 1 - The Birdies Song (Portsmouth Radical Club 24/12/1978) Reason 2 (same night) - a member of the audience (dancing to the same number) died on the dance floor. Over to you, everyone! :-)3 points

I’ve taken a dep in a couple of weeks, which will involve me playing ‘Quando, Quando , Quando’ in a social club. 30 years of graft for this. Shoot me now. :-D2 points

I've not had a chance to watch this properly yet myself so don't I don't know if it's a good watch or not but anything that shines a spotlight on the often under-appreciated John Deacon has to be worth at least a look.2 points

New site is beautiful and a pleasure to use , well done! Pity about the PMs - they were useful for sale & trade history. Fortunately I managed to find most of my conversations in my gmail, using search term: basschat personal conversation May be helpful to others2 points

I'd like to just say thanks for all of the efforts in improving site. Having worked on system upgrades for the last 20 years I know how difficult they can be and the problems faced. Hopefully the majority of users won't be impacted by the lost pm's and can appreciate the benefits of the new features.2 points

There's a lovely guy based in the Cotswolds called Gerry Watkins who has an ongoing mission to set up this thing called The Big Yellow Bus Project...effectively it was a one man crusade to buy a bus, put beds in it and have it as somewhere homeless people could bed down overnight, have something to eat, have a shower, launder their clothes etc. His efforts for fundraising are all his own doing; he's put on gigs and is begging for any help he can to raise money for this (and other projects). My band have already done gigs for him (his efforts raised over a grand for a wheelchair football team earlier in the summer and we're doing a Yellow Bus gig in December). I'm doing all his posters/artwork for gigs. Happily, he raised enough to buy a bus a couple of weeks ago and it's all being refitted with beds and so on. Now then, he's putting on a gig in Cirencester on 2/12/17 and the guys who were providing the PA (free) have taken a paying gig, so he needs a PA for the day. Oh, for free. Whoever provides will get their name stencilled on the bus and an immense feeling of wellbeing. Anyone know anyone who have a PA he could loan for the day? If yes, please shoot me a message and I'll forward on detail to Gerry. Thanks1 point

SSL certificate is high priority but we couldn't organise it until the site was already live with the correct server and domain. It's on the list! @ped - if it's not on the list can you put it on the list? ?1 point

Yeah, fantastic work guys. People don't realize how phenomenally difficult this stuff is to do and how no matter how well you plan, unforeseen stuff can hit you out of nowhere.1 point

You can rough it up first and try ferric chloride, but the reality is that even on real vintage stuff chrome pits but never really dulls (it gets scratched which can look similar) If you want the real aged look you need to go with nickel parts1 point

@Phil_T I never use the buttons either. There's a marked increase in volume using the silver box Behringer instead of just plugging into the mixer. Since I mainly play a single coil P-bass with flats I appreciate the kick in volume,1 point

13lbs is insane. Maruszczyk built me two Jakes (traditional Precision style) which each weigh around 7.2lbs, with no neck dive.1 point

This Friday I'll be seeing our fellow basschatter Bobby Kewley playing bass for The Christians & Altered images on a triple bill with Midge Ure! Sunday will be Mr Big at Shep Bush, then hopefully next Friday Cloudbusting (Kate Bush tribute) at Putney. After that, possibly Simply Dan in Raynes Park on the Sunday.... Corduroy in Guildford on the following Friday and then Airrace/Lionheart in Camden on the Saturday! Phew....!!1 point

Super Furry Animals ? I can smell a rat. Surely one of their friends or relatives compiled this list. They might just scrape into the top twenty bands from Wales. Another questionable inclusion would have to be T Rex. And Radiohead at 3 ? Such lists seem to have been put together by music critics of broadsheet newspapers, who want to rewrite the story of rock music to fit their own pretentious agenda. Thats why bands like Iron Maiden have been conspicuously omitted. They don't fit into their airbrushed view of history, despite being one of the biggest selling and most influential British bands ever. To be honest with you, I can't stand their music myself, but nonetheless Maiden are surely much more important than most of the bands on this list.1 point

Sorry, I don't know anyone in the area who would have a PA But I just wanted to say, what a great cause Gerry Watkins has set up This is brilliant news - and I hope it may inspire other people, in other areas of the UK Once again, homelessness is an awful problem, and it's getting worse all the time Well done to you too for getting involved. If I was closer, I'd be drumming up the support of musician pals (I did a homeless charity gig in Merthyr a couple of weeks back, and was pleased to see quite a few turn out to support the event) But this big yellow bus project is a brilliant idea. Hats off to everyone involved, and best of luck with it1 point

Now I realise what's going on I'm happy to let the mods deal with the problems, they'll get there I'm sure. Stop criticising and let them get on with it. (it is a bit of a pi$$er losing all my emails, like John I needed to keep some of mine)1 point

If that is the case, that's disappointing, especially since I raised the issue on the site migration thread (from the old forum) and was assured that the new editor would be even better than the old one. So if I type a post where my BB tags are technically correct but don't give the result I was hoping for how can I edit them so that they do? I know that now most software is so fully featured the only way the writers can justify upgrades is to make it easier to use for the technologically challenged, but it would be nice if the "power user" features could be retained. Besides IMO if someone really wants to be able to use a feature, they really ought to take the time to learn how to make it work for them.1 point

I'm with FuNkShUi on this..... OK, it probably wouldn't be my first choice of colour / design... but I do quite like it, I must admit Funny thing is, I have a sneaking suspicion my wife wouldn't like it... lol EDIT: Please do tell - how much did the price come out at? Just askin'1 point

It shouldn't turn into that here as we're not using at a "positive vs negative" marker. It only shows how many times people have liked what you've said or similar If I had enabled the negative reactions I could imagine this getting really silly!1 point

Your access has been sorted mate, something you did (god knows what, I've asked some security bods) triggered a security protocol. I've asked them to look at the settings so that it affects as few members as possible while still blocking the baddies. Sorry for the inconvenience!1 point

Compression is something that I think is widely misunderstood by a lot of people. When used in moderation it is the icing on the cake of a great bass tone, in my opinion of course. Because it isn't an obvious effect as such in the way that something like a drive pedal is, some people (and I'm not saying that you are one of them ) have a tendency to set the compressor so that they can hear it working, at which point you're invariably adding way too much squash to your tone and killing all dynamics. The secret of great compression is to use it in moderation so that the peaks are tamed but you still have dynamic control when you're playing. A little goes a long way. Compression is more obvious in a band mix that it is when it's just the bass in isolation. Once you have found the compression sweet spot, the bass will be more punchy and even across its range in the mix that without any form of compression. I find the best way to find the compression sweet spot is to set it up at a rehearsal while the rest of the band are playing, it is more obvious in the mix and at a louder volume than at in-house levels. I prefer to use my ears rather than any sort of in-built metering in the compressor itself. I used to play a lot with a plectrum and used a touch of compression. These days I play more with my fingers and still use compression and I do think it is more obvious with finger playing that with a plectrum, but it is still a subtle effect to listen out for. As with everything in life, there are people who won't like it and you might just be one of them. Nothing wrong with that at all I personally won't leave home with one1 point

Jimmy Lea, ex of Slade, on Sunday afternoon at The Robin in Bilston. He was premiering his new DVD of his one and only solo gig. Did a one hour Q&A session with the crowd, spoke at length of his current battle with prostate cancer and how his hormone treatment affects his breathing, his throat and fitness due to muscle wastage. He then excused himself to "look for some notes" and came back on with his treasured black Strat and with the help of backing tapes and much support from the 300 crowd he belted through four Slade classics. I didn't see a dry eye in the house. What a bloody trooper!!1 point
