  1. I realise that they're not to everyone's taste, but I'd rather he spend his time on making yet more custom instruments than another U2 album.

  3. NO TRADES PLS............Need the cash This is my Laurus T800 sixer. Priced to sell - stupid price infact. Maple top and low low action for any sixer by a mile. Pope pre-amp and overall a beast. I should be asking a lot more for this but It's not getting used. If you've ever been Laurus curious, now is the time.

  5. I've started knocking a few idea around for a 4 string headless. I've got a an old Hohner B2A that I bought many moons ago when I was just a lad. It fell out the back of the guitarists Mini about 25 years ago and the body split, so I cut the sides off and glued on some 'wings'. It's a bloody mess but I've always quite liked headless basses!! So when some headless necks were for sale on here a while ago, I bought one and put it to one side for a project and now I'm looking at what to do with it. The neck is really nice - just something about it feels 'right'. The tricky bit will be cutting the neck pocket for this as all three side of the heel taper from top to bottom (presume this was to aid removal from the mould) so this will need some thought. I will try to make some form of jig so I can use a router but it may end up having to be done very carefully with a chisel...but that's a long way off at the moment. I've roughed out a shape and am thinking of using a pair of EMG pickups (a P and an MM) and a two band preamp. I've made a bass with an EMG MM and 2 band preamp before and really liked the sound of it. I've got one of the 'TW' versions for this so I can split the coil and so should be able to get P, P+J, P+MM and MM options from this setup. This is my starting point but certainly not set in stone: I have made a couple of basses recently with spalted beech tops so I will probably find something else just for a change!!

  6. I must be getting ill. I was in Oxford today with my wife and she asked if I wanted to drop in at the music shop (our rather splendid newly located PMT on the Cowley Road) and I said...no....I can't think of anything I need....even worse, I couldn't even think of anything I wanted, either! I'm sure there must be a cure for something as serious as this, but what is it?

  13. Songwriter, guitarist and a band-leader in both the sense of dynamics and musical direction. Though overlooked by critics and record-buyers, Malcolm Young exerted a force upon rock music that cannot be underestimated. How cruel that his life ended so early and under such sad circumstances. Let us remember him in happier times - a bit more of him in this vid than usual.

  17. Will do. There will be a lot of posting about wood stain and tru oil first I reckon, and then lots about pickups. I will get there tho

  18. The B string if it were heavy enough gauge you’d be able to ‘try’ the theory out but nothing will be as good as the correct gauge for the job. I use a minimum of 182 for F# and i have a 190 to drop tune to E. D’Addario do a 170 gauge which of course will pair very well with their other sets. I’d recommend giving them a go. I’m just using the last of my Kaliums but after that I will be having Newtone Strings make these custom gauges for me. They are very good!

  23. Thanks discreet. I am actually feeling sad about the demise of DefunkT, I've mostly really enjoyed my time with them and at five years or so, it's the longest dep I've ever done Hope the next one is as much fun, sure it will be but first, another set list to learn.

  25. Cheers all - thanks for the suggestions. I tried them all, for now Publisher is the winner for me! Quite pleased with my efforts - even resized this for a Facebook event version. (I know it's easy but it makes me happy )

  26. Another vote for DFA swiches. I've got one on my OLP Musicman. That's the knob I twiddle ostentatiously when the sound man asks me to "drop the level of the bass onstage, please". Works every time.

  29. I think he was just being (very) funny! He certainly made me lol! Seriously guys (@Alex and @Ashdown) if your point here is that gear makes no difference and that an Ashdown head (or a Barefaced cab) is only as good as the person using it, then let's all get something a bit cheaper and spend our money on bass lessons, instead?

  30. I have 2 of these, BSR6GN (walnut/quilted maple -01 and mahogany/flamed maple -98), and there's a reason for that. Best basses I've ever owned, and I've owned quite a few (Fodera, Fbass, MTD), and these 2 have stayed with me. And £3000 is a very reasonable price for a piece like this.

  31. If it is not good enough for pillows and duvets, it cannot be any good for amps. I would also not buy a duckdown or goosedown amp.

  34. Alice cooper in Glasgow on Sunday. Brilliant! Had Dennis Dunaway out for a handful of songs which really made my night. Spent the early 70's learning the basslines on Killer and Schools out. The tubes were a great support act. The mission were just crap.

  35. The latest version of my board! recently sold a bass so had a bit of cash to splash on the board. I added a couple of new pedals and finally upgraded to a cioks DC5. my chain as follows Cali 76 CB into a Boss Ls2 set to A/B/Bypass (the cali works on every channel) bypass channel - goes into TC Polytune mini straight to amp as my clean channel. channel A - 3 leaf Wonderlove with Cog T65 in the effects loop. The T65 has a 3 leaf your doom in its effects loop. This allows me to use the parallel octave and preserve the dynamic nature of the you're Doom while octave/fuzz are in the wonderlove loop, so the dynamics of that are not affected. This is my Synth channel Channel B - this is my dirt channel with a Cog Knightfall always on and switchable with the ls2. I also have the phase 90 and EBS unichorus when I want modulation (will turn off knightfall) and by switching the LS2 into Bypass A/B mix mode I can blend the modulation wirh the synth channel when required, or use a clean blend with the knightfall. dead chuffed with this setup and it's working well, so I think I'll leave it, although I may just have room for a TC sub n up mini or a cog T16 for clean octave
