  1. Bill Evans’s chords in the intro to So What are sublime. BTW, the intro was penned by Gil Evans - no relation.

  3. I'm sure there's been a few threads about this but oh my god, this kind of hyperactive attention whore-ishness represents everything I hate about the internet. I see that annoying face and the awful clickbait every time I look at YouTube, there is just no getting away from it. You search for anything to do with bass, and bang, there he is, with 4 thousand novelty party trick videos, pulling stupid YouTube faces and pointing at 12 string novelty basses. "Finally, a funky fretless 19 string slap bass jam! Leave a comment, like and subscribe LOL etc smiley face" ad infinitum. Jesus christ. Yes I'm sure these guys are all very talented and special, but when I see this stuff, all I see is a bunch of ballerinas prancing around for attention. Anyone remember a time when people got laughed at for being attention-seeking show-offs? Those days are long gone. Now I know this is a rant and I'm being rude, and I'm obviously in the minority, because 1 million followers blah blah, and I know it's a 'business model' blah blah.. but it annoys the living crap out of me personally. Stock Aitken Waterman was also a business model, and their pinnacle was 'The Reynolds Girls'. Just because something is a 'business model' it does not mean it's good. There are people like Adam Neely out there who also have a trillion followers, and they're not resorting to this stuff. No disrespect to anyone who loves it obvs, just my personal view. /end rant (I also hate 'Remco Hendrix', and that german guy with the ridiculous massive beard, and every other o.c.d. novelty internet show-off out there).

  4. I've had a few Status basses over the years. My Series II was bought new in 1985 - I still use it regularly and it's sat next to me now. I've had a few Streamlines too and still have one. Weirdly, back in the '80s, I had the choice of the Status or a Wal. A Wal might have been worth more now but I've had a number since and they don't last long - they just don't really suit me. As above, the SII still here and is played all the time. As to what you can expect, well with an S2 classic, you can expect a very modern, powerful and focused tone with a rich and detailed fundamental - almost a compressed in a way. though they're a versatile instrument and can offer a range of more 'classic' tones. The mid-scooped slap-tone is certainly there and you'll hear videos all over youtube. As for tuning, it's super-accurate and super-stable. Balance is lovely on the headless instruments, and, if you like a flat D neck profile, then this is the classic Status shape. Fit and finish is of a generally very high standard, fretwork is always good (in my experience), and the brass hardware is well designed and easily adjustable. The SII isn't a light instrument but it looks very classy and isn't ridiculously heavy - there was a lot of graphite in the earlier models (not so much now, and certainly not with the bolt-ons). The notion that Status basses are 'sterile' is commonly held but much over-played in my opinion. There's quite an organic tone available if you're prepared to look for it. I tend to favour the bridge pickup with treble rolled back and bass boosted substantially - through an Avalon U5 on setting 2, this is close to the grail of bass tones for me. Lovely instruments and a company that stands behind its product - very easy to deal with and always helpful should you need anything. I also like Status own brand DBE strings (30-90 is my favoured gauge). Good luck - if you're around Manchester, you're welcome to try my Series II

  9. Hi BC I like the threads where we post up stuff we like - it's a great way to find new music and bands etc. I also like stuff that gets the blood pumping faster. I'm into rock and metal - which is obviously mostly meant to be pretty exciting stuff, but there's always those tracks that make you that bit more breathless than others, just listening to them. The ones that you shout yourself hoarse to in the car when no-ones listening and then realise that, yes, you really had better slow down.. I've got loads - lets see what you've got - any genre - just make it really primal, exciting stuff (someone else can start a cerebrally exciting thread..) Here's one of mine - enjoy!

  10. Now this looks like a hot gig. The clip captures excitement and fun for all. Your band sounds fantastic great musicianship and chemistry. And I don't throw words around like fantastic very often. Most of the time I'd say; " Ok, another marginal. rendition of " Sweet Home Alabama" But you guys were fully committed to the song and rocked the hell out of it. Andfor the cover haters there is nothing easy about what Mudpups band did with the song. No matter what you say it's not a paint by numbers proposition when you do a top notch job with any cover. 14. Bought my chunk systems 00 Funk from Ian via bank transfer. It was packaged really well and arrived the next day. Really nice guy to deal with and would happily buy from again in the future. Cheers!

  15. I've used an GK MB150S and it was OK for home use but the only way I could make it work on a gig was to add the extension 112. At home I use my Barefaced One10 with whatever amp I have to hand, usually the TH500. The tone is seriously huge and the whole thing is smaller than the wast paper basket.

  16. Wow that's tiny! I would definitely recommend trying before you buy and I suspect you may struggle to find one second hand, because I doubt many folk will have bought one new? OK - I am going to stick my neck out and say that this seems, at least from where I'm sitting, to be ridiculously expensive (c. £800 new) for what it is delivering and the brand? If I had a choice between the GK MB150 combo and some of the other options listed above I would go for one of the others our fellow BCers have recommended every time. But maybe that's just me?! In the price range that this is in you could get a really excellent combo that knocks this into the dust e.g. the Markbass CMD 121p which Lozz recommended or possibly even the best small combo in the market today: the EICH BC112 Pro IMHO, YMMV etc.

  17. Hi all - I was working through @geoffbassist's lesson on playing Chamber Mates with the bow - I found the rhythm a bit tricky so I had a go at transcribing the head. Here's the transcription if anyone's interested and please let me know if there are any mistakes as I'm no expert when it comes to dots. I posted this to the Theory forum as well but I took the liberty of posting here as it's a good example of something to play with the bow. Cheers Chamber Mates.pdf

  18. I don't mind his videos, he looks like he is enjoying himself. A lot of what he does isn't really my cup of tea. It's like John Virgo doing trick shots in the intervals at the snooker (yes I live in 1988) or footballers doing the crossbar challenge and keepyuppy tricks, fun and not to be taken too seriously. Just my take on it.

  22. Excellent! I only got one correct and that was the DB player. But I’m not meant to know about landscape players.

  23. That could be the correct diagnosis, thinking about it....maybe I'm just stagnating with the band I'm in the and the others I'm peripherally involved with...good call! I've reached the point with gear where I have no more room for shiny new bits of kit, so anything coming in has to be matched by something going...and there is nothing I can part with (at the moment...)

  24. You already have some of the best basses, amps and cabs. . . . . I reckon you have reached the stage of having enough. That's a good place to be. Now you only need to focus on the important stuff, what your are playing, where and with whom; the set, the gigs and the bands.

  25. ...and sometimes some people take the internet a little too seriously. These things come up on our recommendations cause click on them. If we didn't click on them YouTube's algorithm would soon give us many other recommendations. That guy seldom comes up on mine but he will now that I have looked at him once. He's good at what he does and a lot of people watch him. He must be doing something right.

  26. The Moog bypass is supposedly a bit like a slightly coloured preamp - hated by some so that they use a true bypass loop; but on the other hand I have heard of at least one person who loved the sound of that always-on preamp so much they got a custom made mini box to replicate it's tone!

  27. One thing I do remember about the Moog filter is that it wasn’t quite as responsive to the envelope as some other pedals. @Bo0tsy, did you see the Xerograph sale post I tagged you in?

  28. You have to distinguish between 'entertainers' and musicians. There's a lot of pretty egoistic stuff on YouTube to wade through, and some of it is bxxxxy annoying, but as a learning resource it's still unequalled. Where else can you compare 8 bass players each doing their own covers of even fairly straightforward songs like Steely Dan's 'Josie' ? The general standard of bass playing is so high now compared to the average player 20 years ago it still amazes me, and I think the internet is the main reason. And some players are so good they don't need to go attention seeking - just check out anything where Rob Mullarkey is on the bass - what a supreme talent!

  29. I already know I like it as I rented one from faxpedalrentals.com. It’s worth doing to get a feel. The patch bay is really versatile. I’ll be getting the phaser too as it opens up loads of possibilities, eg using its LFO to open the filter, or using the envelope to sweep the phaser. The main thing lacking on the filter is a down sweep but I’m looking into finding a CV inverter which should hopefully solve that. I’m also seriously thinking about getting a Glou Glou pedal too as I really loved it. I may well have to list a few other pedals for sale and possibly even a bass.

  31. I understand your point of view. But, it’s the same like you would get pissed off about the comments under the videos. There’s nothing you can do about it. Hate is a strong feeling, not necessarily a good one either. These guys do it for living, and they need people to click on their videos to get paid. And YouTube makes it super hard for them. If they still manage to make a living out of it - I say well done. Just another point of view. But I do know what you mean, it gets annoying sometimes when that’s the only thing you see when typing “Bass”.

  37. IMPOSTER!!! There is no such thing as a BC member without GAS, and if there was somebody who was temporarily content with their set up they certainly wouldn't miss an opportunity to shop if/when their partner offered them the chance. Also no self respecting BC member would admit to having "No GAS" even if such a condition existed (which it doesn't BTW). Continue with your lies and accept the consequences!!

  38. I’ve decided to let my MXR BEF go as I’m focusing on low pass filters. I’ve negotiated a deal on a Moogerfooger lowpass filter from my local shop and may even get a bit more off on Friday.

  40. Pretty sure it doesn't ... there's no tweeter! Even if it does, the Trace 208 appears to cost the same as, or more than, the cab I'm after, and would have all my hard-earned dosh going to a Yankee megabucks corporation rather than to craftsmen here in the UK. 10 years ago I was one of Alex Claber's first regular customers, partly because I like his cabs, and partly because I want to support people doing stuff in the UK music industry rather than just channel money to the USA and China. I'm happy to be dealing with Tricky Audio, and I suspect I'll get much better service from them than I would from Peavey! Now if only Mike Lull would leave Seattle and re-locate to Uxbridge ...

  43. I like my basses to be unique, if not, then "different" at least - you don't get this from a painted finish. How many other people have a red/black/3TSB P bass? Give me an exotic finish every time...

  44. Saw him on Thursday in Newcastle. It was a great show but we commented numerous times about the spot operator. It would randomly appear on the rhythm guitarist while he was playing a verse but rarely when it was needed and sometimes it was on nobody at all! Well worth seeing though.
