3. That's a nonsensical, illogical stance though. But I give you that if you stop 10 random people on the street, at least 5 will agree with you. In the real world however, the most talented musician most probably (almost but not wholly by definition) will be known by, and understood by, very few. The moment you people want to educate your kids, and think that newborn babies have little knowledge, is the moment your popular view has become a falsehood. Cue the Triangle of Knowledge. People who think that Paul McCartney is the most talented musician ever simply have no clue, and when they attack people like me for being condescending, they are in fact being arrogant themselves. It's the Dunning-Kruger effect at large.

 5. Needs a couple of prongs sticking out the top with a blue electrical wave arcing between them (and maybe a hunchback manically turning the dials as well).

 9. I know the last time I said something about not liking Prince's work, I got slagged off. I still don't like the vast majority of what I've heard of his. Like a latter-day Paul McCartney. Still, while it's OK to say what you like about Coldplay or U2, Prince is sacrosanct so I suppose I'll get slagged off again. I won't deny he's composed a lot of stuff and could play lots of instruments, but I'm not convinced of the merit of what he's composed.

 10. Looks like an original Mustang routing to me, especially considering that plate on the bottom, but someone has done a really awful job of perhaps trying to fit a standard Precision pickup in there at some point. If this routing wasn't on the original product description from Mr Baxter, I'd perhaps be having a quiet word, because if I'd known about that at point of purchase, I'd want a few extra quid off. Si

 11. Found images of your amp on Google, and as you say there is an external speaker jack on the front. This will do one of two things - either enable another cab to be added as well as the internal speaker in the combo (in which case will need to be at least 8 ohms?), OR enable another cab to be added whilst cutting out the internal speaker completely. Without knowing the spec of the amp and what ohmage it will work into it is dodgy trying another cab, especially if the former option is the case as it could do some damage. Only thing that may be okay is turn the treble up a bit so you can hear some hiss, then quickly insert and remove a jack plug into the socket - if the sound disappears as you do this you’ll know it disables the internal speaker. UK distributor for Stagg appears to be EMD Music in Surrey, tel. 01293 862612. Maybe worth a call to them for spec details. Cheers.

 12. When I'm playing acoustic pub jams, I often take my tiny Tanglewood Elfin bass. It's about 25" scale.... I'm 6' and yes, it does look a bit "toy-like" - but do I care? Nah! Actually, it's often my backup bass too - surprisingly, it sounds like a full size Precision (don't know what pickups they are, but they sound great) and it probably only weighs around a kilo..... maybe even less

 14. Was lured out by the rap thread, so I figured I'd make an official introduction. Have been playing off and on for the better part of two decades, mostly guitar, bass and vocals. Stuck with bass for most of it, and have done a few stints playing in bands of varying levels of (mostly low) success. Have a pretty hefty arsenal of bass gear: MIA Jazz, Stingray 4H, G&L SB-1, Peavey Foundation, MIM Jazz Deluxe 5, Mesa D800+ through a pair of Bergantino NV115s, Fender Super Bassman through a pair of Orange OBC115s. Predominantly play heavier styles, and have recently re-embraced the pick. Also have a fair amount of studio gear, and will be starting proper guitar lessons after the new year. Not good at fighting GAS, as indicated by recently picking up a Marshall 1960 stack for a song, which has rekindled the urge to practice the skinny strings. I'm also convinced that my pedals are breeding when I'm not looking. Follow F1 and MotoGP fairly religiously, and am making an effort to start watching EPL and rugby - willing to take any pointers for either of those (asking for a friend). Aside from that, looking forward to the Grand Tour starting back up and I'm hoping someone can explain why BBCA in 'murka seems to only play Star Trek: the Next Generation on loop. Cheers!

 19. I've always liked the sound of the ABM amps but not overly keen on the look, the spec of this sounded right, it certainly looks right (to me anyway) and most importantly, over the past 3 years I've learned you are only here once, so if you can afford it... Absolutely. Top of the list, anything else is as nothing. ?

 20. @Osiris he did say though that he would categorically, unequivocally NEVER use it, nor even turn it on. Bas is a man of principles and conviction, he never backtracks on ideals and statements. i think we can give him the benefit of the doubt here. There will not be a thread saying ‘DG was the sound 2 years ago, but not last year, but is again this year’ I promise you.....

 22. @Al Krow are you really suggesting JPJ and Flea lurk in the background? its plainly obvious that those two, especially JPJ drive the songs and the energy of each song. all or the sounds have to blend for it to be a good sound, look at Primus as an example, Les does some crazy stuff, but his guitarist also has crazy effects he uses to fold around the bass and it as much makes the song as the bassline. i would argue it’s the same across a lot of genres in a lot of circumstances, and more than you would think. a classic example of missing how a bass drives a song is listen to Evil by Cactus. Then listen to Black Stone Cherry’s cover of it on their recent album. They downtuned it and slowed it down and it lost all the energy, whereas all along the bass was subtly driving it, in the background and you may have missed it. i agreed with you once earlier today, usual service resumes!

 26. I think Sibob has hit the nail on the head. It looks very much like an amateur attempt to fit a regular precision pickup in there (seems to happen a lot to old mustangs). It won’t affect what is still a cool bass but you should have been informed and the seller should have known about it, especially as I thought he dismantled most of the basses he has in, or used to. You seem to have been really concerned about the bass from the start so I think you would be perfectly within your rights to return it. If it was me, I would suggest seeing if there was some haggling room and seeing if you could get a decent chunk off what you paid. As the Bass had been modified anyway, I would perhaps look at having the route properly done for a Precision pickup to smarten it up, and you have the option then to swap in the future. I doubt it would do anything to the value, especially if you have the work done by someone with a lot of credibility and shielded properly etc.

 30. I always send post EQ as well - the sound of the bass in our band is as essential a component of the bands sound as the guitar is, going pre EQ would completely destroy the sound of the band to the point where there wouldn`t be any point in doing the gig.

 36. Stu, in the main forum menu there is the gear porn section. In there, there are dedicated pages, one of which is a Wal only page. You may just want to move your unveiling there since thats where 'we' are easiest found.

 37. I hear that the Medium was cancelled due to unforseen circumstances. Unfortunately, or not depending on your perspective, this is what puts paying bums on seats in Felixstowe, and similar sized venues in similar places such as Clacton West Cliff Theatre. The Spa Pavilion tried the alternative, went bust and on balance I'd rather have the venue survive on a diet of mostly tribute bands, panto and the occasional more interesting event than see it going back to being closed altogether. This is an 800 seat venue. To sell that out for a jazz gig you'd need to be offering something very spectacular, especially in Felixstowe which is not exactly the easiest place on the planet to get to.. What we really need in this region is a venue like the awesome Apex Theatre in Bury St Edmunds, which is exactly the right size and vibe to attract all kinds of brilliant events, but we're struggling with the local alternatives.

 40. I'm kind of in agreement that this sounds like its not gonna happen, however my own personal band circumstances - geographically there are 238 miles between furthest flung band members, we meet up for practice once every blue moon, and several members are involved in 'other projects' of various denominations. However, its the most fun I've ever had with a bunch of like minded plonkers....sorry, band mates, we're travelling all over the UK and to be honest we aint doing too bad. Only you can decide if this is worth waiting out, but for my two penneth, Id say don't go burning any bridges just yet, but obviously keep your eyes open. (Also) dave

 44. If you are cutting out the front of house, it sounds like you are driving the inputs of the speakers far too hard and the circuitry is cutting the speaker in order to protect the components. Make sure that your sound guy knows how to gain properly and the input is set such that the speaker doesn't not peak. With regards to the crossover, you consider the PA system as a high and the crossover routes the frequencies coming from your bass to either the tops or/and woofers appropriately. An in appropriately set crossover wouldn't cause your PA to cut out - that would be the incorrect gain staging and pushing too hot a signal to the speakers from your desk's output. Set your speakers to 100Hz but with all honestly, with what you've said, it sounds like your sound guy isn't... and could do with a crash course before he/she causes damage to your PA speakers.

 47.
Nile Rodgers is the same, hit maker strat strait into a DI or the desk, with maybe a some Slight compression. If only we could all sound that good without help!!
Yes, I was just thinking about Nile ... to the OP, the bad news is that your problems are not solved even when you have managed to get a Bernard-ish tone and can play his lines tolerably well. An even more intractable problem then awaits: getting your guitarist to approximate what Nile does. If your guitarist comes from a rock/blues background (and needless to say, many if not most do, in this country at least), then it's going to be an uphill struggle. The problem is that many guitarists think funk guitar is 'easy' - just a couple of chords, lots of choking and that fast strumming plectrum thing - how hard can it be, eh? But when they have a go at it, you get this horrible churning sound that rock guitarists always make when they think they are being funky. Many do not even understand how to eq their amp for funk playing - turn off that reverb and distortion, FFS! Anyway, good luck with it!
