Hi, Not wishing to be contentious but....would you like to add some meat on the bones of that comment? Wouldn't mind knowing if that was meant in jest or actually was meant seriously. Happy to discuss privately or on here. I can quite happily confirm that every piece of kit I've ever reviewed has been reviewed and tested by me either at home, at BGM offices in years gone by or in-store if we're conducting a review day. Having written for the mag for 13 years, every review I've written has been with the gear at my disposal. All the best one and all, Mike3 points

And any I’ve seen have a pretty awful/unique tone... there is a different vibe and sound to acoustic basses beyond just the look. They are great to tinkle on around the house without worrying about amps and stuff. As others have said, for and ensemble playing a small amp is a must. There’s a huge variation in cost and quality in the sound (esp of the pickup) so try before you buy is pretty much a must. Ive got a Faith acoustic bass which I got a great deal on new at £500 and it'sgreat fun in more acoustic settings. For your jam session an electric bass and small amp would, of course, work fine. But if it’s also about the vibe and the look and a less electric tone and you just fancy one then definitely try some out. Then you can make an informed yes or no decision.2 points

I was trying a joke on the fact a bitcrusher isn't meant for very quiet musical contexts or sweet melodies. Nevermind.2 points

@dodge_bass @basexperience great little demo Dodge bass! lofi sounds nice and subtle but deffo adds abit of synthyness to the octave (an Oc2 by any chance) basexperiece ive just started myself and my set up isn't as elaborate as yours (my board and setup is in the pedalboard thread) my core sound is a cog T65 with 3 leaf you're Doom. and Wonderlove! but I've also a cog OD and MXR phase/flange/chorus so in using combos of those pedals! The cog octave with the dirty up is a main sound and i can blend in other FX via its loop. I'm looking at expanding my setup with ring mod/bit crusher and getting an expression pedal next year! I'm also going to try and get another Digitech bass synth wah as they sound great. The keyboard player has absolutely loads of vintage synths and arpegiators as well as a really cool nord! and he really knows how to use them, he also has an original deep impact which I think I'll be borrowing off him were doing some covers of electronic Sci Fi film soundtracks (terminator in 7/4, stranger things theme, John carpenter themes etc) as well as prog rock and fusion (herbie Hancock etc) as well as original material. As ive judt discovered Jojo Mayer and nerve through researching pedals ivecgot really into those sounds! Its all for fun and im finally getting to mess about with my pedals2 points

Watching the Cbeebies panto with the kids and I think the bassist is playing a V7, nice to see an inexpensive bass on a high profile gig.2 points

I've had a look and can't see mention of this elsewhere. Alan Cringeon is a valued friend. I've followed his career as a luthier for at least 11 years, from the early days. Many of you will know him and his work, either directly or from various bass resources. I won't go on but I would like to offer my congratulations as a Salace 5 String E-Type has just been awarded the accolade 'Fretless Bass of 2017' by Bass Guitar Magazine. I know how much time, effort and pure craft Alan has devoted to building both basses and guitars over the years and I for one am dead chuffed for him. Peter1 point

Well I'm booked into have my left done on Tuesday which is eight weeks after I had my right one done. Whilst I played a gig 17 days after the surgery on my right hand it's still not 100% and still has some healing to be done, there is still a very slight numbness in my finger tips, if I have a day in the office on the computer it's very sore the next day, and the cold plays bloody hell with it. Fortunately playing bass is absolutely fine 👍 Gonna do a bit of a carpal tunnel recovery blog (with photos) on here for anyone who finds themselves in a similar position and wants to see what it's all about, see you on Tuesday night, wish me luck!1 point

I love the fatness of an opto compressor. .... They're just squidgy and add real grooviness that I clearly can't put into words 😂 Or get a great vca compressor, they are a really good best of both worlds workhorse tool.1 point

Strings make such a huge difference and there's no logic to it. I wonder how many basses I've moved on over the years that would have sounded killer with the right strings on them. Lesson: if you don't like the sound of a bass, don't change the electrics or pickups, try changing the strings first!1 point

A pre-EB Stingray that I picked up for £250 in a shop called Back Street Music in Edinburgh in 1981. The pickup was way out of alignment (no idea how it got through quality control!) but I had it messed about with over the next few years - refinished in white, scratchplate replaced with a little chrome ring round the pickup, Schaller bridge, brass nut. It was far from 'original' but it sang and played like no other bass I'd owned! Foolishly, I sold it when I couldn't make the rent just before Christmas 1985. I still have a copy of the receipt I gave the buyer - Phil Winter of Holdenhurst Avenue, Finchley N12. God knows where he (or the bass) are now, but I'd love to get it back. If anyone sees it, do let me know....1 point

5 weeks into the wait for this. Carbon rods in neck, Aguilar 60s j pickups, swamp ash body, passive electronics (I have an easy j retro sitting here waiting to go in) , luminlays. Looking forward to it.1 point

Relisting this for sale as I simply don't use it enough to justify keeping! It's a 1978 fender usa jazz bass. As far as I know it's all original apart from some solder on the pots. Fitted with some light roundwound strings, she sounds very aggressive! It's a heavy bass, will try and get an accurate weight. Plays and sounds great. The body paintwork is very heavily aged/cracked and as such would recommend viewing however I will post. In my opinion looks fantastic and a proper road worn bass! The price is fixed, would take a lakland 4402/4414 as part trade deal but that's all. Comes in a hard case, don't think it's the original. Can include a lightweight allparts jazz bass body for extra if any buyer wants it. Collection prefered, can meet within reason for serious buyers. Check my feedback. Any more pictures just message me. Thanks!1 point

Obviously you're a highly suspicious person... I have to complete a single Captcha to start a thread, but that's it. Firebox 57.0.1 on Ubuntu linux, if it helps.1 point

My Gibson EB-3 from 1969. Great bass I don't remember the gig or what happened to it. Wow, I had a lot of hair in 69.😁 Blue1 point

Spent some more time with this, I'm really loving this little rig. The cab seems to correct everything I didn't like about the 'tone' (or lack of) of the Big/Super cabs; the subtle eq curve of this speaker is really pleasing and surprisingly (or not given the ampeg vibe) works really well with my distorted lines. I found the other BF cabs I have owned simply too clinical and found they really didn't work well with distortion without heavy EQing. I will be trying this out in rehearsal and looking into whether or not a dual One10 rig would be enough to actually use with Barbikan, but that being said I still don't envisage a gig where a backline/PA isn't provided. The Mesa is really impressive tonally, used with the Darkglass B7KU I find myself with a much more flexible setup than the M900 alone. I really, really like the Voice knob and deep switch. I also don't think I have ever spent so long gazing and admiring a rig!1 point

I take it all back about the guitarist not having spare strings after I turned up for tonight's gig. Post should have read What sort of roadie forgets the f*#$&*g mixing desk!! 😂 I'm not joking either.1 point

Cool - I’ll sure to be great! I’ve got a nice Rode set-up for my DSLR, but I tend coy to use it ‘cos it’s a bit conspicuous. Looks and sounds great when I do use it, though!1 point

I would think you could have some redress againts the organisers if you are injured or your kit damaged. Not an area I have any experience in but I bet a few on here will have. I don’t go out on the big dos at work because of one guy who always tries to start fights with random strangers when he has a few. Some people are just idiots.1 point

Email Alex at Barefaced. If he can't put a smile on your face a mile wide and save your back at the same time you should be playing a flute.1 point

I endorse this statement 200%. In some cases, compared to reasonably sized “normal” pedals with top jacks, nano pedals can be a false economy. You potentially gain nothing in terms of pedalboard real estate but can sacrifice controls/functionality.1 point

If you need to be completely un-amplified you are going to need a double bass. Acoustic bass guitars simply aren't loud enough to compete with anything more than a single quiet (not strummed) acoustic guitar because the body isn't big enough to project the sound. Low notes and a decent volume requires a large body, hence the size of the double bass. There are a few very large bodied acoustic guitars like the Earthwood Bass, but they are very rare and expensive. The other issue you will come across is that decent small-bodied acoustic basses (one you will be using with an amp) tend to cost a lot more than an equivalent quality electro-acoustic guitar, partly because they aren't so popular and also because once again amplifying low notes is more complicated than a standard guitar. Unless you get very lucky with something like a bargain-priced second hand Takamine TB10, expect to pay at least £1k to get something of the equivalent quality to a £350 electro-acoustic 6-string guitar. TBH if you are going to have to reply on amplification you might as well use your favourite electric bass and a small and unobtrusive combo. It will sound better and you won't have to worry about feedback or excessive handling noise from cheap piezo pickup systems.1 point

err Thoman, I've changed my mind, instead of a Fender Jazz I want a Precision bass. Keep the Jazz as well? why thank you!1 point

If you still have plenty of lacquer left in your can I'd be tempted to knock it back now. Go steady though and maybe do it over a couple of days. Knocking off the surface will help to release any trapped solvent. Once the bloom has gone give it another round or two of spraying Edit to say that a cold or damp garage is obviously not the best environment for spraying. Try to do it at the warmest part of the day.1 point

I wasn't there, but Silverfish were ace. I do remember them having a fair bit of music press coverage at the time, and the slot on Snub (BBC2). Could it have been Transvision Vamp? They had a lot of music press coverage / indie darlings.1 point

Here's a 28'' scale fretless I just finished (build thread in the Build diaries section). It's called the Flea Market Funk Machine as it was made entirely out of wood from furniture found at flea markets.1 point

Confused.....didn't somebody say recently that Alembic had copyrighted the use of the oval fret markers? Lovely looking bass, Chris but you know what? It's just cluttering up your playing space...best you drop it round here to get the space back...you know I'm right...1 point

Pirastro Evah Pirazzi Weich strings growl nicely and bow nicely. 99% of sound guys have never done a double bass and have no clue. They treat it like a bass guitar... boost the bass, cut the middle... wrong, wrong, wrong.1 point
