  1. My acoustic short scale fretless bass. My goal was to build an acoustic that was as loud as possible without amplification. I failed. It isn't loud (enough). But I do enjoy playing it once in a while.

  4. Hi Basschat, The reason i purchased this bit of kit was through Janek Gwizdala who highly recommended it on one of his youtube VLOG's, have started filming a few live gigs with it, and the video and sound quality is actually great! Anyone else been using the Hero 5 Session?

  6. I'm sure I remember Doug confirming this exact thinking in his podcast interview with SBL. This topic (the original post mainly) basically highlights some peoples lack of understanding of what is sometimes necessary for full-time musicians to undertake, basically to monetise whatever you possibly can. Clearly there is a 'market' for his more esoteric solo performing, at trade shows, clinics etc etc, but as has been mentioned above, it probably represents a tiny percentage of the bass playing he undertakes daily. He's good at it, people will clearly pay him to do it, why wouldn't he play like that. In any case, the whole 'bass should stay in the low end' is the most boring, yet constantly visited, rhetoric going. These people are musicians, that they choose the bass guitar to represent their voice is a moot point. Those players will likely stick to a 'role' for a lot of their musical life, but who cares if they diverge if it's an enjoyable experience for them or someone else?! Si

  9. I loved the JJ Burnel sound, and his bass on the Stranglers first album "Rattus Norvegicus" was what first made me listen to the bass guitar So that's my contribution - not necessarily my fave album these days, but it's what got me into bass

  11. Hi all, It's been a while but I have finished another analysis of Jamerson's playing. This time I have looked at his bass break from Marvin Gaye's 'At Last (I Found A Love). The full article featuring my analysis, full transcription and cover video can be found here - Jamerson Analysed Or, if you just want to watch the video, you can do here - At Last (I Found A Love) Enjoy! 12. For sale is my Dingwall Combustion 5 string. Since I have owned it from brand new, it has been upgraded to meet my Dingwall AB1 bass. You can not buy a Combustion in this specification. The original specifications are: Alder Body. Maple Neck. EMG Active Preamplifer. Dingwall FD3n Neodymium pickups. Four way selector switch. Ability to make this bass an NG2 as the pickup slots are routed at the factory under the pick guard. It now features: Official Hipshot USA ultralight tuning keys instead of licensed versions. (£120) Black hardware all over verses standard chrome (£60) Dunlop Dual strap buttons (£?) Dingwall SF2 Super Fatty II pickups!!! (£200) A pair of roller string trees to aid string changes. I'd also mention tuning stability using these, but the bass was always rock solid for days anyway! Things to note: Where I removed the old string retainer there is a small drilled hole where the screw came out. There is a small 2mm wide dip on the lower edge of the bass. It's the same colour as the paint anyway so pretty much unnoticeable. I've tried to photograph it but I can't see it in the picture lol. I have moved the rear strap button downward, therefore there is a hole (that you could put something in I suppose - another button or even a neat screw to fill the space. For these reasons the price is marked well below that of it's worth. The original pickups are not included in the sale. Original hardware not available. (Bass is pictured with string retainer not rollers here) Collection is of course going to be the wisest idea and a cup of tea will be forthcoming Payment by Bank Transfer. - However, should you wish to have the bass shipped to you, payment will be made by bank transfer, no PayPal. I will ensure the instrument is safely packed in a soft case inside a shipping carton. It will be marked as Fragile with full details of address to be sent to. The arranging and shipping of the instrument will be up to the buyer and thus any claims insurance claims for loss or damage by the courier will be the responsibility of the buyer. No returns. (Photographs of the instrument and case and packaging will be made prior to collection. I can provide the necessary details for the buyer to arrange the shipment. Don't offer me less than £1000 heh heh! There's about £1300 worth of bass here already! Should I find a way to find £1000, this bass will be removed from sale. I've struggled as this bass should be my keeper, but financial situation has made me put it up for sale.

  13. When looking for a fretless 5 a little while ago, I read various reviews and then decided to take a chance on something that was from a reputable maker and had good reviews. I the. Found on line a bass at a very good price which I thought, if I have made a mistake , I can sell this on at at reasonable .price. I got a fretless Spector Spectorcore 5 string. Very well made in his own factory in Korea, comes with magnetic pickup and piezo, a bonus which I now really like. I find the string spaci g a little narrow but not a huge problem. Plus it's quite light, has an ebony board and has an wry nice looking maple cap to boot. May be a risk is worth taking?

  14. Best thing about that bass was the bridge! Bad bass, good bridge! Way better than needed on these Satellites... (Picture makes the bridge look chrome but it was/is brass!) Suits both string-through-body and normal string basses I believe.

  17. I’m tempted, but very loyal to my Sansamp. It’s the mains only thing that bothers me...I know it’s because of the valve...but having battery/phantom power options (and no noise) is so useful 😜

  20. So this started with a generous offer from ikay to share his library of chords. And then all sorts pile in and the whole thing descends into the usual forum mire. Quite pathetic really isn’t it? I suspect that some guys here won’t venture out after dark without a comprehensive risk assessment and a man with a torch.

  22. No not at all - I still use the POG for solo's but as an all-round great octave pedal the BOSS OC-2 wins for me, the low octave on the POG doesnt seem to be as tight as the BOSS, its a bit washy, but the high octave is killing obviously :-)

  30. I bought a Sony (XB20 I think) one from Argos, I think off their Ebay sales, about £55/60, its okay, I don't know much about bluetooth speakers so started off with this cheepie. Cases are available online but they won't hold the larger mains plug so I used an Apple usb wall plug.

  31. I think the bit and sample knowns are mislabeled, big knob is samplerate, small is bits. And mooer is definitely acts quite differently depending on what you put into I compared to the Frantabit.

  35. SS amps hate very low impedance loads or shorted outputs, tubes hate very high impedance loads or no load. The one saving grace of a 1/4" output with tubes is that you can use a switching jack to short the output transformer secondary to prevent damage if there's no speaker plugged in to the amp. Fender has used that arrangement since the 50s. The Fender switch is on the Speaker jack, not the Extension Speaker jack, so if you plug into the extension rather than the speaker jack the switch remains closed and you get no output. I doubt there's a Fender owner who ever lived that didn't find that out the hard way, even to the point of thinking the amp was blown. Tubes are also almost immune to too low an impedance. Back when I didn't know any better I ran Fenders into 1 ohm loads all the time with no ill effect.

  40. I'm 49 and just about to start playing. If I thought I'd be giving up by 60 I don't think I'd bother. Age is just a number and it really depends on what you can manage - plenty of much younger folk wouldn't be able to play any instrument through poor health/mobility/flexibility. I'd have thought that playing 6 strings is a good indication that you can do it. A bit more practice and you'll get there. As I say, I'm a bit younger, but I'm finding the physicality needed is a surprise but with time it'll ease. I may need to change my bass as I do have lower back problems and the T-bird is a bit heavy and awkwardly shaped (nose dive anybody?).

  43. Even at the local level it's important. Ever bring a guy into a band and you notice after the 1st couple of gigs he only packs up his own gear and leaves. Not cool. Off topic: Pick of me in 1969 playing my Gibson EB-3. Nobody can tell me I'm not "hood" 😂 Blue

  44. Just to be argumentative, I don't think neck construction, neck joint, bridge construction and/or attachment or tuners make any difference to how a bass sounds either, but that's just my opinion of course. When I swap out stock tuners for Hipshot Ultralites there is no difference in 'tone' and they are very different, engineering-wise. In my view its strings, pickups and the position of the pickups that make the difference. Most basses sound a lot like... basses.
