  1. I told my darling wife I wanted nothing music related this Christmas. I got a Christmas jumper and a 'worlds best bass player mug' , amongst other delights. I'm happy, now that it's out there.....

  5. For Sale or Trade £325 Now £295 Bergantino HT115 Purchased a few weeks ago from here on Basschat https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/309875-bergantino-ht210-and-ht115-new-price-sold/ Gorgeous cab but it’s a bit too big and bulky for my needs so I’m passing it on to someone who will get a lot more use out of it than me. Location is Southampton. For sale for £295 or trade for a lightweight 2x10 cab or possibly a good 12” cab like a Barefaced or similar. Might also consider a powerful combo that I can use for practices and small/med gigs. If I got the right combo I would also sell my Markbass LMIII. At the moment I can only afford one bass outfit for everything hence the need to change things around. Collection is much preferred or meet (up to 50m from Southampton) or I can ship via Interparcel UPS in the UK for £20 uninsured or £30 insured. Bergantino HT115 1-15" & Horn Speaker Cabinet 15" cast frame woofer w/ 80oz. magnet, vented pole piece and 3" voice coil High intelligibility tweeter with cast horn Power handling - 400 watts rms Custom phase - coherent crossover with tweeter level control Frequency response: 40hz - 18khz Sensitivity: 99db • anechoic: 2.83v/1m Impedance: 8 ohms Dimensions: 18"H x 22-3/4"W x 18"D Weight: 59lbs (26.5kg).

  6. Hello chaps. I had another gig last night, and acoustically it was the opposite of last week. Last week the bass got lost in the large and relatively bare concrete venue - very difficult to hear any definition, and seemed like there was no bass at all. Last night I was stuffed in the corner which seemed to reinforce my sound - absolutely loved it! The sound guy said it was nicely balanced out front, but on stage it was all ME! I mentioned it before, but I find with such lovely tone and oomph at my side, I feel more confident in my playing. I find myself just noodling in between songs because it sounds so lovely!

  7. Ok guys I'll tell you what I did. I discovered by accident that Gear4music do what is called the LA bass for about 90 quid, it comes with a rosewood neck which I hate but I bought one anyway to see how bad it was. Imagine my surprise when it arrived and it was as light as a feather! When I checked the spec' the bodies are made of Paulownia wood which is very light so I wondered if they had a maple neck that was also 61mm. They had so I bought one to try out and it fitted! very tight but some very light sanding made it fit spot on. There was a little neck dive, nothing much so I bought some wilkinson schaller stylee tuners which fixed it. I bought a loom from John (KiOgon) and a pickup of choice to finish it and it's brilliant. Issues with doing this job. The first one I did the neck wasn't exactly straight and the strings ran off a bit but it was easily fixed by using a Schaller 2000 bridge that has lateral adjustment so the strings could be lined up exactly. There are other cheaper ways to sort that though. The fret edges can be a bit sharp but that's easily filed and smoothed, also the maple necks are a bit paddle shaped, my friend Dave on here very kindly made me a headstock template so shaping it was just a jigsaw and a bit of sandpaper away. I'm very pleased with my cheap lightweight basses, my gas is now satisfied. HTH Tom. Oh the necks are only £35

  8. About an hour ago through gumtree I picked up this little beauty, a decent gig bag, a fender cable, and a leather strap (a cheapo one, but still...) all for only £200. There's not a mark on it, not even on the protective plastic which is still on the scratchplate. Just put on an old set of flats that I've had sat in the cupboard for a while, and OMG this thing sounds flipping amazing.

  9. I went to Gear4music yesterday to try out some speaker cabs to go with my CTM100 valve amp as my (Now departed) BB2 didn't provide quite what I was looking for with this amp. First I tried a b-stock Laney Nexus N410 which I quite liked, good tone & quite punchy but I hated the honky horn. I wanted to try a TC Electronics K410 but sadly it was out of stock. Then I tried the Fender bassman neo 410 & a had wow moment,it made the Laney sound like a toy. What an amazing speaker cab, bass aplenty with loads of punch & the tweeter is so sweet with no harsh honkiness at all,I really loved it immediately,it jusy had to come home with me. Now I'm itching for the new year so I can hear it in a band setting & I'm certain it'll be awesome.

  10. The 424x sounds great with flats on. I've tried Thomastik TI flats which were great but a bit pricey. Currently using a cheap £15 brand called Olympia from Amazon and I really like them. Great feel to them. Both sounded great on the 424x.

  12. I'm not too fussed. I took a punt on an offer that was too good to be true, but too good to pass up, just in case. At this time of year it's bound to take a few extra days to sort any refunds out.

  14. Well today I got a DVD and a couple of books. I wasn't complaining though as a couple of weeks ago I'd already had an early present from Mrs Painy - one of the bargain Gibson EB 2013 5 string basses from GAK .

  16. Moogs do have a sound all of their own - and its primarily a that of a fuzzy, slightly detuned oscillator - which is actually musically pleasing. Having said that I have owned Minioog's (original), more recently the Voyager, Voyager XL, Voyager Old School, and played about with the Little/Sub/Sub 37 Phatty's. All very nice, but there is a little bit of 'myth' going on about how superior their sound is - the rest of the world has caught up and we are spoilt for choice. Not least in software emulations! Monark is good, but try Arturia's Minimoog V - I believe you can download a free demo. Having said all that the 'one knob per function' tweakability of classic Moog instruments is the appeal - you won't go far wrong with a Sub37, and don't worry about the third oscillator - most of the classic vintage synth sounds were adequately made on 2, not 3. Remember the original Minimoog mostly used the third oscillator as a modulation source. The best VFM at the moment in monosynths is unquestionably the Arturia Matrixbrute - its basically a hardwired modular studio in box and for only about 400 sovs more than a Sub37, which I hate to say it, it easily outclasses. Of course this is a Bass forum - the daddy is clearly the Moog Taurus III Pedals - now sadly out of production. If you see a set going second hand buy them. No, scrub that, tell me first - I'll buy them!!!

  20. Rutherford's Shergold instruments were custom order. The "halves" could travel in separate cases. The modular body construction allowed various permutations of twelve, six and four string. There were even the missing body sections to complete individual guitars, if required.

  21. I've hated them on every other bass I've tried but TI flats sounded fantastic on my Stingray fretless I tried Chromes on my Sterling when I bought it and it sounded terrible yet I've used them on a lot of basses over the past 7 or 8 years with great results

  22. I have been working on a Latin version of Bach's second Cello concerto all month. The themes are all written out but it is too complicated for me to play and my PC is playing up and I couldn't record it in sections so I didn't enter it. Sorry guys. I bit off more than I could chew!!

  27. Seems a lot of hassle maybe just look at a did power supply? The new new strymon Ojai R30 is all in one rather than two bits but there are many more. No isolation between the outlets aswell not a big thing if the pedals are ok with it but the pog and pulsar I’m guessing would add a bit of noise, being big drawing digital pedals

  31. My acoustic short scale fretless bass. My goal was to build an acoustic that was as loud as possible without amplification. I failed. It isn't loud (enough). But I do enjoy playing it once in a while.

  32. I am 59, took up bass a couple of years ago. Play in a 70s classic rock / blues covers band, playing the stuff I grew up listening to. Always wanted to be a rock musician and know what being in a band was like. We play pubs and beer festivals. Now I do. Best thing I ever did. Almost 60 and finally I feel cool.

  34. I think flats on a Jazz sound great, too. Don't get me wrong, I like the boingy single-coil sound of a Jazz with rounds, but there's something about using flats on a dual-pickup bass that's greater than the sum of its parts. And a lot more versatile than you'd think.

  36. I believe Duncan Designed are made under licence (probably in the Far East) to a lower price point and SD's are made by the "real" SD guys in the US to a different and higher price point. There ought to be a discernible difference with the SD's having the "better" sound or else SD's business model isn't up to scratch. If you have the pickups sitting around then I'd be using them. It's a reversible mod so if you invest the time you probably gain a much better sounding bass. If not put it all back and sell the pickups.

  37. The very moment the bass was sold the old owner doesn't get a say in what happens to it anymore. That could be if it was repainted, split for parts, used as a baseball bat or sold on for more money. It doesn't matter if that was the buyers intention or whether on the morning he got the bass he lost his job and needs some cash fast. To complain about what the new legitimate owner wants to do with his property is pathetic and infantile. A few years ago I sold a pair of Markbass cabs on here to a guy somewhere in europe. Might have been France. Can't remember. Anyway - after about 6 months he decided they weren't for him and put them up for sale. I didn't notice until a prospective buyer sent me a PM to demand to know what price I had sold them for (and it was really a "demand" and whether the current owner was ripping me off. Turned out that the prospective buyer didn't even think about shipping costs to another country (seller was doing an inclusive price) or market changes (the cabs had been discontinued and there was a bit more interest in them) or any other factor - like changing in shipping fees or even the use of a different speed of shipping service. He also seemed amazed that I genuinely did not give a flying flip at a rolling donut about the new price for the cabs, and he got quite upset that I wouldn't tell him the final sales price or the shipping cost to get them abroad in the first place. Apparently not divulging the content of private discussions is "against the community spirit" or some other bollocks. Absolute tool.

  42. If you find this behaviour a crook act, what about anything you buy each day, like that gasoline you bought for say £100 GBP when the real factory cost all included is £1 GBP... That's called in marketing language : (huge) profit and that's the world we live in. The only illegal thing in what you describe is the use of pictures and text without permission, that's all. The rest is simply a guy who have seen a good opportunity to make some quick and easy money. Don't tell me you never done this as we are all chasing the good deal !
