  1. Stolen from elsewhere, made me laugh....could easily sub Basschat and some bass related topic I fear! How many Facebook group members does it take to change a spark plug? 1 to change the spark plug and to post that spark plug has been changed. 14 to share similar experiences of changing spark plugs and how the spark plug could have been changed differently. 7 to caution about the dangers of changing spark plugs. 27 to point out spelling/grammar errors in posts about changing spark plugs. 15 know-it-alls who claim *they* were in the industry, and that "spark plug" is an electrical device threaded into the cylinder of an internal-combustion engine to ignite the fuel mixture by producing timed sparks between electrodes. 2 to post that this group is not about spark plugs and to please take this discussion to a spark plug group. 27 to defend the posting to this group saying that we all use spark plugs and therefore the posts *are* relevant to this group. 16 to debate which method of changing spark plugs is superior, where to buy the best spark plugs, what brand of spark plugs work best for this technique, and what brands are faulty. 2 to post URL's where one can see examples of different spark plugs. 12 to post to the group that they will no longer post because they cannot handle the spark plug controversy. 4 to suggest that posters request the spark plugs FAQ. 16 to post "F". 44 to ask what is a "F"? 4 to say "didn't we go through this already a short time ago?" 3 to say "do a Google search on spark plugs before posting questions about spark plugs". 14 to post photos of spark plugs they own. 1 forum lurker to respond to the original post 6 months from now and start it all over again....

  2. Again, who are you trying to protect here with this proposed ban? Fender and their trademarks? An unwitting buyer? If the latter, as long as the bass being sold isn't being misrepresented this isn't a problem. If it is being misrepresented (e.g. a Limelight being advertised as a genuine Fender) this breaches the forums terms and will be pulled when its inevitably spotted. If the former, who made you the forum prefect? This is not your issue to police, nor is it the forum's; it's an issue between Fender and (e.g.) Limelight. This whole thread just seems like a pretext for you to alter what can be bought or sold on the BC marketplace just to suit the fact that you don't understand why / disapprove of someone putting the wrong logo on a bass. Your proposal is a drastic solution to an issue that - as far as I'm aware - simply hasn't been a problem on this forum and you're invoking some ill-defined 'protecting of innocent buyers' notion as a pretext for it.

  3. I am sorry to say I have recently fallen for such shinannigans, I brought a Fender Custom shop 1963 Precision bass secondhand, with all the certificates and case goodies, it now turns out the bass was actually built in 2016 and contains no genuine 1963 parts at all, I can't believe I fell for such a con, should I burn the darned thing now so no future potential owner can be deceived in the same way I clearly have been? I seem to have made this mistake before, I brought a Fender 50's classic Precision bass that also turned out not to be made in the 50's I didn't like the bridge, the pick up or the sticky reverse wind tuners, I replaced them all with better quality parts (Gotoh and Lindy Fralin) do I still own a Fender Precision or is that also an unsaleable copy, please help, confused of Northampton?

  4. Then what a good job you were here to point it out. 'Basses for Sale' works very well and has a way lower incidence of deceit and fakery than the usual suspects such as G*mtr** and *B*y, where one is much more likely to encounter less-than-honest sellers. BassChat 'for sale' forums work very well because the people who put items up for sale here are largely honest and community-minded. If you want to imperil that with a draconian rethink of the existing system then you risk throwing the baby out with the bathwater. It's a non-issue.

  5. Yes, you are reading it wrong. It is to avoid having to talk with (or be talked at) by John Hall. talk to him, you would understand!

  6. Are we already suffering from too much holiday time on our hands, or what? I say every Fender bass made after 1965 is questionable - because Leo sold the company to CBS in that year and thus they were no longer made by him. Thhp! Maybe we should have a member vote on it? And should the site owners go nuts and say we can list only 'genuine' Fender basses on BassChat, I'll be more than happy to PhotoShop the decals off mine before posting the pictures. And subsequently PM any prospective buyers to tell them that it still has a Fender decal on it. How''d you like THEM apples, ladies? This is first-world-virtue-signalling-snowflake-problem stuff, people. If you're determined to worry, there are far more important things to be worrying about. If you really think the possible misuse of guitar decals is any sort of an issue, I would suggest you thicken your skin somewhat, get out a bit more and start enjoying life.

  7. As far as BC is concerned, I think its sole ethical duty boils down to whether there's an intention to deceive a prospective buyer. The OP first raised this earlier today on an ad placed by a BCer for his Limelight Jazz bass. That bass is clearly being sold as a Limelight - not an original Fender - and as such imo there's clearly no intention to deceive a buyer. They know they're buying a Limelight, not a vintage Fender. And imo there ends BC's (and the buyer's) responsibilities. To claim that they must also be responsible for any future selling of that bass, possibly long after they sold it here, is nonsense. You wouldn't expect someone to be held responsible for the correct & legal resale down the line of, say, a car they sell tomorrow on autotrader, so why would you a bass? As for the ethics of putting Fender stickers on non fender basses; personally, I'm not remotely arsed about whether some huge corporations trademark is being infringed, and i'm surprised that anyone who isn't a corporate lawyer acting for one of those corporations could give a hoot either. Are we all gonna start acting as unofficial trademark policemen for private corporations we have no connection with? Seems a bit weird and cult-of-Apple like to me...:)

  9. Same outfit as me: B|Amp and 2x HD 112's Great sound. I bought mine from Bass Direct back in September and didn't realise they were going to get so difficult to source so I'm glad I did!

  10. That list could be on any forum anywhere. And one of my good reasons for not being on Farcebook

  11. Sounds like you may need to mute the strings between the bridge and the tailpiece. They make a right racket through the piezo.

  12. We all know. You proposed a similar ban on such things being sold on here (which could be anything, even on the sell anything pages) and this was rejected. What more is there to say. Yes, we implicitly condone it but we don't care. You seem to have one sympathiser as far as I can see but the mods have stated that nothing will be changing. Carry on by all means but it's your head and your brick wall.

  13. Sorry I got to page 8 and then gave up: 1. The forum T&Cs clearly outline it is prohibited to decieve 2. The mod team and about 15.000 other active members already jump onto members if they misbehave, misrepresent etc etc. 3. 99.9% of BC users are here because this is a specialist bass site 4. 99.9% of BC users are trustworthy 5. No clear examples of deception can be reproduced 6. There is no real method to guarantee fakes are spotted To me this spells non-issue. It’s like putting a roundabout on a road nobody uses, you csn do it but it costs time, effort and does not solve anything really.

  14. Making a mountain out of a molehill is perfectly acceptable unless someone tries to pass the molehill off as a mountain. That would be an attempt to deceive and I would probably have to go onto mountainchat to denounce the practice. In fact, I've seen several molehills for sale recently, each of which had been described as being a molehill but nevertheless had a little cocktail stick 'flag' stuck in the top with the name of a celebrated mountain written on it in biro. There was a 'Snowdon', a 'Ben Nevis' and - unbelievably - an 'Everest' with a little plastic figure purporting to be a representation of the Dalai Lama. I have referred the latter instance to dalailamachat and enjoy considerable optimism that the moderators will recognise their duty of care to Buddhists and stamp out this repugnant trade in fraudulent models of this much-loved religious leader. Imagine the pain and suffering when someone thinks they've bought the real Dalai Lama and it turns out to be a tiny bit of cheap Chinese sh*t. Some people might think that's acceptable. I don't.

  18. I don't mind smaller companies copying a bass, as long as their own label is on it. People putting Fender logos on Squires is wrong, especially if they try to pass it off as a Fender. If you want a Fender, buy a Fender.
    2 points
  19. Nope. Nope. The misuse of brand logos is an issue and is illegal. As I mentioned, another site (The Fretboard) has implemented a no fake logos for sale policy, and at least one FB group has too. It is a real problem, not least exemplified by the fact that someone has posted on this thread that they bought a bass with a fake logo thinking it was a Fender. Commenting on whether folks have a thick skin or not is quite missing the point and is irrelevant.

  20. This is great. I feel like I’m embroiled in some type of conspiracy. My life has just got interesting. I’m selling the bass in question on the forum. The original sale line I put up was “ Fender Jazz with limelight love” Another chatter pointed out that this may be throwing others of the sent. ill be perfectly honest, when I bought this bass I thought it was a fender jazz reissue that had been pimped by Limelight. I honestly thought that’s what they did. Like some people do with cars. Once I had read upon the company I realised I’d made a genuine mistake. So changed it immediately. Im not sure of the legality of logos etc. i completely agree about not promoting the sale of fake instruments in any way. I don’t think it’s the quality of the bass as the Limelight is stunnng to play and I own genuine vintage fender jazzes. It’s the intent to decive that would damage the site. Maybe it’s an issue for the powers at be need to consider ( wait until I’ve sold my Limelight first please) I do believe in the integrity of BC Members. I’ve been buying and selling on here for years and have never had anything but good experiences. I’ve often relied on the comments and knowledge of other members to inform my decision and increase my own knowledge I’ve always felt I can post questions Maybe we need a section to “Ask the experts”

  21. So I’m still very good friends with All but two members of the band. Nice Christmas messages from all of them. They’re carrying on without me and the singer who left at the same time. The plan is to earn more, think my mate the guitarist will turn to bass and they’re going down the much more tried and tested “Dakota” route. A shame really - but I wish them well. Tomorrow we meet with Neurosurgeons and have a look around the family quarters at St.Marys in Manchester. All grand, Iris (the little bundle of stress/joy/fear/interpretation) is also going to be seen in 3d and we’ll hopefully come away with heads full of More information. Anyhow, we’re all enjoying Christmas...Jenny’s Nanna turned 100 today, and my Nanna turned 82. We met a new family addition today at a do, and my eldest daughter (Ella) got a guitar for Christmas and has declared I’m to be her bass player when she’s famous.

  22. So... we ban the sale of overt replicas, and allow only the sale of either genuine basses, or the surreptitious sale of fakes. I'm really not sure what the benefit of this approach is...?
    2 points
  23. Practically any bass is suitable for any music. You only need to look at photos of different bands playing in a style of music, and you'll see a variety of instruments being used. As has been said, turn the treble down and favour the neck pickup, play nearer the neck, maybe use flat wound strings.

  30. But that's exactly whats been happening! There is NO evidence that anyone has listed a bass for sale with the intention of selling a fake! No need to change anything. It was all ticking along nicely until someone decided to make a mountain out of a molehill.

  32. Sorry for leaving this thread unattended for a while. Since David Heyes is running a bass workshop in North London on Sunday 15th April, it seems like a better idea to avoid that date. I suspect there'll be a several basschatters who'd like to be there - I know I would. The following weekend was suggested, but I have a recording commitment pencilled in then, which could make it tricky for me. So, here are two options: Saturday 14th April, or Sunday 22nd. I may not be able to make the latter date, but I'm happy to help with the organising even if it turns out I can't be there. One way or another Pete, I'll make sure there's cake.

  33. Thanks for the information in the topic. I have been trying to decide if I needed to change the strings on my Kala Rumbler since they look a little rough. However, they stay in tune and sound good to my ears so after reading this thread I think I'll keep 'em on for a while.

  35. Hmm... here's a C&P from grocerchat.co.uk: NO FAKES Let's try to make this 100% clear. We have rules on Grocerchat. You should read them *before* posting, and re-read them as often as necessary to be able to remember them so that you don't break them. Regarding "Fakes" specifically, Rule 10 states; Do not post baked beans for sale that are not what they appear to be (fake, counterfeit, etc). We will not - we can not - allow the forum to be used for advertising baked beans that are not what they appear to be. If you're selling baked beans and your photos show, or your description says, that its got a label on it that shouldn't be on it (ie it was added retrospectively and not by the copyright holder), then it falls foul of the rule and is NOT allowed. Disclaimers in the description do not offset the visual evidence. It doesn't matter if you say that it's NOT Heinz (which is the most affected brand). An inappropriate logo on the tin still makes it appear to be something that it's not. For the avoidance of doubt, if you've put a genuine Heinz label on a non-Heinz tin, our legal advice is that the item as a whole is still considered a fake and so we can't allow it to be advertised here as a complete tin. For the further avoidance of doubt, I've referred to "Heinz" only as an example because that's the brand that's most commonly affected. but it applies to all brands equally - HP, Tesco, etc. In future, ads that breach this rule and show or refer to labels that shouldn't be on the tin/s being sold will just be removed. Members who repeatedly breach this rule will lose their ability to use the grocerchat.co.uk.

  36. Perhaps if you pm'd perceived "offenders" before affecting their sales threads?????
    1 point
  37. I believe Mark uses generic fender parts ie allparts etc, I dont think they are fender parts. When I originally sold it, I advertised it as a limelight 62 stack knob jazz bass. No mention of Fender A real 62 stacknob would sell for considerably more than the £750 i sold it for.

  39. Last week I decided to finally put the Labella flat wound strings that I had bought almost 2 years ago on to my Yamaha BB 1200. You can imagine just how gutted I was when the A-string broke as I was putting the strings on. Finding a single replacement string was clearly highly unlikely so this would render the whole set as useless or at least mean that I would have to buy a new set and have three spares. On the off-chance that they might be able to help me I wrote an email to Thomann.I heard nothing back for several days and thought, “oh well tough luck”. Imagine my surprise when, four working days later, I received a single replacement A-string in the post and that during the Christmas rush. Many thanks to those nice people at customer service at thomann. Merry Christmas XXX.

  40. as long as an amp is small enough to fit in a gig bag it's small enough. The elf is ridiculously small, but you are gonna sit it on top of a speaker cab which is much much bigger........the elf is unnecessarily tiny.

  41. The thing I don't understand is why people do it. I once inherited a company car for a few weeks where the fool who had it before had stuck a "Turbo" sticker on the back; it was a clunker. The thing about BC's responsibilities is that they do not end there; websites cannot claim a hands-off approach, especially when they demonstrate a willingness to arbitrate on other similar matters (ie. Rickenbacker). With regard to the ethics of faking Fenders there was one just today where it seems that somebody on ebay has bought one. (The thread itself turned into a nice sideline about UFO, though!) As for protecting brands rights, I've no affiliation with the companies, but I do feel a duty of care to the potential buyers; I'm at the stage where I don't trust things with Fender logos. And heck, some of the fakes/fogeries may stand up in their own right; the saddest thing of all is seeing a vintage Tokai with a Fender logo on it.

  45. These are all class D Amps with switching power supplies and although very efficient, the still produce heat. Usually the total combination is about 80% efficient so at 200 watts, total power is 200 X 100/80or 250 watts. So you still have to dissipate 50 watts of heat. If you can touch it but it is very hot it is likely around 60C, at 70C you cannot keep your finger on it. Many Amps have their over temperature settings between 60-70 degrees. Make sure the space around the amp is clear to aid airflow but in general if the Amp is not cutting out, I would not worry.

  46. The logic of this suggestion might seem a little oblique, but what about using an electric fretless? That's what I've started doing for acoustic gigs. Obviously, you've got to balance the consensuses that: you'll probably have to plug in anyway; a decent acoustic BG with a good pickup is likely to be a sizable investment; and a normal electric bass is likely to receive a few disapproving tuts from some of the purists. Fretless basses can sit really nicely in a gentler acoustic setup. More importantly, those likely to care enough about you using an electric instrument are also more likely to notice if your bass guitar has no frets; if they can spot that difference then they're also more likely to know that it (usually) has a softer and less intrusive tone than a fretted bass, and perhaps give you the benefit of the doubt that you are at least making some concession to their pedantic acoustic purism. (Am I way off the mark here?)

The bass arrived this morning and is everything he said it was. First class deal and hope to trade again. Thanks Tomas.
