  4. Sorry but that's horsesh!t. Bowie used samples in loads of songs. Remember that tune he made with Goldie in the 90s? It was all samples.

  5. Right. I tried the QSC at rehearsal last night. Observations: - 5 piece band: drums, keys, 2 guitars, bass + vocals (Americana/rock) - Plenty of headroom - more than enough. Lots. Like buckets of it. I was at about half vol on the QSC and controlled volume on the bass or Preamp pedal. - It plays with Preamp pedals very well - gave a good representation of the sound I was after - Lots of bass for a 4 string - never felt like the lows were struggling - No parping out or rattling - nice and smooth. Response was as good as a Barefaced Compact and it was louder. - Projection across the room was also good All in all it worked very well.

  10. None of my basses play like butter thankfully. I play in a mod band and often sport a tonic suit. The mixture of heat a dairy based spreads would be a disaster.

  12. Just sold my SR605 to John. He made every aspect of the transaction easy, with prompt payment and good communication. He was patient enough to wait a week or so while the dust from the holiday season settled, and I got into the swing of things in a new job. So, don't hesitate to buy/sell - he's one of the good ones!

  13. Well, last year I reached a bit of a milestone in work - 30 years! So to mark the occasion, in a moment of madness, I decided "to hell with it" and ordered myself a Limelight bass One of my fave colour combos (if not, my fave) is Fiesta Red, with rosewood board and tort plate (of course) Since having my old Squier P bass converted into a P/J, I've become a real fan of this pickup configuration A few years back, fellow South Walian pal FuNkShUi was selling a Limelight P, in Fiesta Red, and it had a Jazz style neck I tend to prefer Jazz width necks, or at least I don't mind P width necks.... but don't like them to be too deep.... So that was my order - a P/J Precision, fiesta red, with Jazz width nut. I missed out on FuNkShUi's bass back then, as I had to sell a bass before I could buy another A week later, the MM I was selling had sold (to another BC member) - but the Limelight had gone, and I had been kicking myself ever since Mark at Limelight has done a superb job. I asked him for a medium-light level of "distressing". I know not everyone is a fan of Relicing - I don't care.... it's MY bass I think it looks lovely. A quick noodle, and it feels amazing! Sounds lovely through my small practice amp too. Can't wait to plug it into a larger amp and crank the volume up Since the new CITES rules , Mark had a bit more trouble than usual sourcing the Rosewood fretboard neck - however, I wasn't in a huge rush, so I told Mark not to worry .... my new bass has been worth the wait. I'm a happy boy - but am currently in work, and can't wait to get home, to try my new bass (Pics courtesy of Mark at Limelight)

  14. Yamaha BB1100S £250 This is my "vintage" Yamaha BB, made in about 1985. It has been my instrument of choice for the past ten years. When I first bought it, I loved the P-bass sound but hated the thin sound of the rear Jazz bass pickup. So I embarked on a project to fix it. It took a few years and pickups from several makers. A Seymour Duncan alnico Musicman pickup eventually gave me a result I was happy with. Not only does it give the Musicman bass sound, but its output also matches that of the front P-bass pickup - and they both work well in combination. Here's a vid that gives a good idea what it sounds like (at least with rounds): <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYDLKCrGQsc> It looks like that guy also had an issue with the rear pickup, as he has something fatter in there. Features a Jazz-type neck (thinner than a P-bass), tobacco finish, 3-way selector switch for front, back or both pickups. Switchable active circuit with bass, mid and treble. Active can be switched out to give a purely passive option that doesn't need a battery. Strung with Thomastik flats. This is a 30-year old bass that has been played. It still looks the part, but it does have its share of the dings, dents, scratches and holes that are more obvious up close. There's a bit of buckle rash on the back (as in the photo) but the frets are in good shape. Weight is around 4kg - about average. I changed the front pickup to a Seymour Duncan SPB-1 vintage. If you'd like to keep that (and you should), please add another £40. Otherwise, I'll refit the original Yamaha pickup. You'll get the original Yamaha pickup either way.

  15. Yeah, I also have a Protection Racket rucksack, and whilst it`s a nice rucksack it is a case of pretty much everything in one compartment, so on gigs where I don`t need everything (which I generally find out at the gig, so still have to bring it all) I still had to take everything out in order to put back what wasn`t needed.

  16. Tone foam is tricky stuff. If you can't get pre-CBS foam then modern foam that has employed wax-based products gives the best results. Be sure never to wash it though!

  19. I’ve got a ton of pedals but for my “clean” I disengage everything and just go dry bass > hi-Z input on mixer set flat > speaker. My basses sound phenomenal straight in with no tone shaping other than their own onboard EQ controls.

  20. Not the usual sort of thing that I post, but as it's January I've been thinking a lot about how to get the most out of practising and realised that there's not much point putting in the hours if you can't focus in the first place: There's a more detailed rundown of all the books, apps and strategies mentioned in the video HERE The site has had a facelift and been transferred to a new server, so things should be looking better and running more smoothly than before. New transcriptions on the way next week...

  24. I've played one. They weigh a ton because the body is so large. Plus, they don't sound the same as the guts are totally different.

  25. I've a SWR Goliath SR and it's awesome. A little on the heavy side at 115lbs but sounds amazing with the tweeter off. Best thing is no one seems to want these behemoths so are dirt cheap on the 2nd hand market. Tone wise, a great presence, strong in the mid range, a clean tight sound.

  28. I've had regular white nylons and really liked them. Seemed to have a harder surface than the black nylons, and were smoother to the touch.

  29. The tension on the La Bella low tension flats is only a little higher than the TI. They are very close. If you like your La Bella FLs you might want to just try a lighter gauge of them instead

  32. The J pickup on yours is in the 60's position - i.e. further from the bridge. It'll honk less than the 70s position, but in theory it'll be louder as there's more string movement where it is - so it should balance better with the louder P pickup.

  34. At the moment it's still Chromes - regular light gauge: 45, 65, 80, 100. Bought them October 2012. They feel and sound great. Not too stiff and really easier on the fingers.

  41. Happy New Year to all Basschat members. Ok, so I’ve been dipping in and out of the site for the past month or so to see what’s what (and to read some very interesting / funny threads) but there's nothing new been added to the thread about the Wal and with no news from anywhere else I think it’s time I can actually call it my own. So, as promised (if anyone is still interested) here are some pics. As soon as you see them you may understand why I didn’t want to just post pics etc but rather wanted someone to come forward and say “is it serial number $%^$&* and is it such and such a finish?”. Being such a distinctive bass nobody could have guessed the details i don’t think so it would have been pretty apparent that they actually knew the instrument! I can’t imagine there are many like it out there?!!! as I haven’t heard a thing from anyone about it or even a hint of a mention of it anywhere I’m really hoping that I’ll be it’s new custodian from now on but if these pics throw up any new leads i’ll follow them up for sure. A little bit about the instrument. It was virtually unplayable when I found it; action was through the roof and the neck was so loose in the pocket it would move from side to side with little effort. I appreciate some people may have liked and played a set up like that (apart from the loose neck perhaps) but I got the feeling it hadn't been played for a while. It all just needed a little tweaking though and now it plays wonderfully, though it does still have some electrical problems. a quick once over by electric wood at some point will sort that I’m sure. Ok, so over to the pictures to tell the rest of the story. Not a beautifully exotic wood faced instrument and perhaps not everyone’s cup of tea (or glass of banana milk?) but…it’s….a….wonderful…..WAL (and definitely not something you ever expect to find at a bootsale so keep your eyes peeled!).
