  1. Swearing at people in work isn't professional though, irrespective of what kind of environment you are working in. You certainly wouldn't get away with it in my workplace. Sounds like this person you choose to label a snowflake stood up to some typical alpha male bs macho behaviour, and you don't like it. Good.

  2. Sure beats my usual method of weighing my wife and then getting her to hold the bass and then weighing her again

  3. I like that they're making crossovers from various classic Fender models, but I wish they'd do it with a little more... taste? For example, I really dig the stuff RS Guitarworks is doing with some of the classic designs, like a Jazz Bass in '50s P-bass style. Just awesome! https://rs-guitarworks.myshopify.com/collections/basses/products/contour-bass-54

  5. those lyrics were written down by Knopfler, almost verbatim from a conversation he overheard, as such he is singing in character. Changing the 'offensive' lyric, not only detracts from the ire towards the person being sung about, but also changes the person being sung about (80's American hair metal type). IMO of course

  6. More or less just an excuse to say what a top bloke Paul Young seems to be and what a shame to lose his wife at such a young age. One of those guys who make me wish I could sing like him (if I could sing at all).

  7. Why didn't Fender think of the RS-guitarworks 50s style jazz bass. It's fabulous.

  10. New bass day: BB1025 They say you don't miss something until it's gone. Well that was very true in my case with a new 'end of line' BB425 I managed to get my hands on last year but then parted with, too soon, in a trade for another bass. I came close to getting a Vintage White ('VW') BB1025 from Rimmers earlier in the year, which was the finish that I'd wanted (the same as my former BB425, in fact), only to find that stuff that was supposed to have already sold out had, in fact, sold out! The trouble with seeing the black 1025 for trade in the FS section each time it got bumped, is that it reminded me I'd really like to get my hands on a VW BB1025! But not at the price the Yammy Store in London had listed theirs online for. @dannybuoy mentioned a little earlier in this thread that they would be willing to price match, so I thought I'd see what I could negotiate. I was in town today and met up with @CameronJ for a pedal swap (returning a loaned bitcrusher and buying a couple more Source Audio pedals off him!) and persuaded him to meet at the Yammy store. We A/B'd a new P34 on display with the VW BB1025. Why they only provide relatively under-powered Hartke amps to show off their wares, I have no idea! The P34 is indeed a lovely bass and had they had a P35 in stock I might have been half tempted, but they didn't and I managed to persuade them to undercut the Rimmers' price on the 1025 and to also include a really good quality Yammy gig bag (which seems to be a lot better than generic one included on the Rimmers' website). There was no way a P35 was going to be worth more than twice the price of a 1025 for me, which should make for an excellent gigging bass (and without being something I'll fret about the occasional ding along the way, which I probably would with a P35). There are just a few differences between the 1025 and the 425. The 1025 has a better body construction with a 3 piece body & spline joint; a better bridge; nickel rather than plastic nut which should improve the articulation on the open strings a touch and the P-pups are split blade rather than split single. That's pretty much it. The PUPs on the 425 are a P-bass on steroids; they deliver a very impressive punch for a passive bass and I found myself dialling-back the mids a touch with the 425. The 1025 pups are more balanced in that regard. So I think I have been fortunate enough to get my hands on very possibly the last new VW BB1025 for sale in the UK; I hope I've learned my lesson from letting my 425 go, too soon, and hold on to this one for a fair bit longer!

  12. Given that he's not done a lot with the guitar since it was dropped a couple of years ago I've decided to go with 9s. I spoke with my mate Feritt at Foulds in Derby. After we'd talked through the merits of 8s, 9s and 10s he sold me a set of machine heads for around £15 and some strings for £5. The machine heads are of a good standard he says because he's used them before. We reckoned it would be better to go with the light strings and make it as easy for the lad as possible. The set shown has a spare top e. Not a bad thing since the 0.009" is the most likely to break. Whenever we asked him about getting the guitar fixed he would go quiet about it. I have a feeling he got a severe telling off from his dad about it and has been reluctant to go near it since. Today is his fifteenth birthday so it's time we got it fixed for him so he can have a proper go and if it isn't for him, he's got a good guitar to sell and put the money towards some of his sports activities. The old tulip machine heads are packed up in the pack from the new heads and will do for spares. The lad's granddad Jack says he might have them for a uke build. The new ones pop in nice and snug after I clean out the holes with a 10mm auger bit. It turned out that the older heads had a slight taper down from 10mm and there was a bit of crap in there from paint prep at build. 9 to 42s with a spare 9 thrown in Replaced full set of machine heads Full restring Polished frets Cleaned fretboard with lemon oil Checked wiring (good) Tightened nuts at each pot as one was quite loose and the others finger tight only Cleaned, polished and buffed entire instrument It sounds great and that's just through my bass rig. A light refurbish for £20, not bad.

  14. But would you be offended if they didn't change the line? My band changes the homophobic lyric in Dire Straits' Money for Nothing. I wouldn't feel comfortable with a homophobic insult used in that context. However, if the op is referring to "I look all white but my dad was black" then unless I'm missing something in context or other lines I don't find this offensive, it's not saying being black/ white/ mixed race is good, bad or better one than another or giving an insult. Society still has a problem with race and mixed race and calling that out to think about is no bad thing... Unless I'm completely misunderstanding.

  15. Always had time for Steve Winwood, his music and his bands, and some years ago I met him by chance at a christening. So really, I should now tell you what a terrible twunt he was. However, he was charming, urbane, funny, showed a genuine interest in what I was doing musically and we chatted for some time. Sorry.

  16. Another useless bit of Ruts trivia but guitarist Paul Fox played drums for me a few times in a jam band I was in circa 2007, just before he died. He got up and did Babylon's Burning, flicking everything to full on a 40w Fender tube amp - it was the loudest most punk rock I ever saw.

  18. *NOW TRADED* Looking to trade this bass for a 4 or 5 string Precision or good copy of similiar(ish) value. Based near Bath/ Wiltshire area. This is a 1999 stingray. Well played but all working perfectly. About a year ago I had a glockenheim 3 band preamp professionally installed which on this bass sounds immense!! Its seen a bit of action with dings, chips and cracks here and there on the body. Nearly all of these which are on the body are on the top, bottom or back of the bass so it still looks in pretty good shape from the front. None of the issues are structural, or deep- more chip and finish cracks. There is a small ding in the neck which was professional filled, apart from that the neck is all good and plays nicely. Weight on my bathroom scales is about 5kg....(not sure of their accuracy but it ain't a light bass- well balanced though and perfectly manageable with a decent strap) The reason I'm selling it is simply that I've settled on another bass for all my live work and I really want to get a precision for recording. Don;t really want to see it go but can't afford both right now. Its a great bass, a lot of bass for the money- as long as you are not to worried about it being road worn! There is a soundclip under the photos - stingray wav . It was recorded direct into the computer with the eq set flat. Fingerstyle with the phase selector to the right, slap with the selector to the left..... please excuse the cod funk playing...... stingray.wav

  19. Run a bath, then put the bass in it. Measure the volume of water displaced ( make before and after marks on the side of the bath) and calculate the weight of the bass according to Archimedes. Then take the next five days to dry out the electronics and check the neck for any warps. This will save you the £5. May need refinishing.

  22. Yes, definitely loving this. Spoke to Richard Ruse about a pedal like this after I got my Trickfish rig. Sadly Richard passed away recently but hopefully Trickfish will continue to grow and do the guy proud. Will probably cave and get one when they're available, especially with all those routing options!

  27. I have an NS CR4M and I get an authentic sound using Spirocores and a hair scrunchie that goes right around the body and positioned just over the bridge to reduce sustain. It's important too not to use too much bottom end in the sound as a real DB is inefficient in this area due to the constraints on size of the sound chamber. I've had best results using a Fishman Platinum Pro (old design) with the Deep control adjusted to 11o'clock area into a Markbass Minimark 2x6.

  28. Probably a bit late now, but... I'd also recommend trying him out with 10's. As has been said they'll feel like 9's would on a Fender because of the shorter scale length (243/4" v. 251/2"), and the extra mass in the strings should give a slightly fuller tone. Marginal, but worth a go at some point before he gets too used to the 9's.

  31. forgot to mention.. with light strings the nut has to be spot on - or there will be zero chance of staying in tune at the lower frets. The following method has served me well for years... 1) fret string a the 3rd fret 2) tap string onto the top of the first fret (the wire itself), you will almost certainly feel the string move ( too much clearance) before you hear a metallic click. 3) very carefully lower nut slot (keeping the break angle) until you feel no movement but you still hear a click as you tap (any further is to far and will fret buzz). Err on the side of caution here until confident. 4) repeat until all strings are at optimum.

  32. How long until they re-issue the '55 P - single coil pickup, contourd ash body, 2TS finish? That's the perfect design. As far as I'm concerned, there was no need to re-invent the Precision Bass in 1957.

  34. A number of factors at play here. Type of EUB, body size, materials, pickups and electronics, strings, action etc. I have a Baby clone and it sounds bloody good and close to the real thing (a decent DB sound). Have had many a compliment on this very thing. Initially I had been using weedwhackers on it for a while and it sounded more dark and gutsy and closer to a DB than when it had steels on it. I was playing mostly pizz. I then replaced the E & A with hybrid whackers with a steel core and this gave it a bit more sustain and balance. I also added a second 'clicky' pickup to the back of the fingerboard for slap playing. I blend the two signals together. I have since added Pirastro Slaps and that has made it seem even more realistic again in terms of achieving a good acoustic upright sound. I have also found using an Aphex Big Bottom Bass Xciter has made my EUB sound more 'articulate' all round, particularly giving it a bigger, and generally 'rounder' sound. The trick with using this pedal is that less is more. (I am keen to get my hands on their Acoustic Xciter pedal too, as I am given to believe they can improve upright tone quite substantially.) I run that to a VT deluxe where I have programmed 3 of the channels specifically for the EUB My EUB does sound pretty close to a full upright as-is, but all of these extra little additions definitely help give it that last nudge towards fully authentic. I have live recordings from each of the different periods between mods/additions and the differences are noticeable each time.

  35. Just wanted to say I’m very, very happy with the PL. I’m so glad I found that before getting any of the much more costly boxes. It worked so well with the BDDI that I had it on almost all night. I’m fact I turned the BDDI off a few times, which I have never done before. Rehearsal was the first time I plugged it in, so I’ve not really messed with it much. I will do the mod at some point but over the weekend I’ll be able to have a proper play and mess with the trim pots inside. i should also mention that I was using my Vanderklay cab and Sire V7 tonight for the first time in months, and the bass really made a difference as well. Going to bed happy knowing that my quest is over......for now. I am thinking of getting a smaller cab for rehearsals though, maybe a BF 1x10. Our new studio is on the first floor.

  37. I've had a G30 for a few years...it works fine but the above elements are a bit hokey. The belt clip is frankly awful and I live in fear the battery door will just spring open (but it never has). About ten days ago I bought a Levys MM4 pouch. Have a quick look on You Tube and you'll find videos. I favour Levys long polypropylene straps...the narrow ones; the pouch wraps around the strap beautifully (via Velcro flaps) and the pouch itself is elasticated so the transmitter (less the belt clip) goes in nice and snug. Fantastic bit of kit.

  41. Strange really, from my own point of view, as a friend of mine recorded a fantastic jazz/rock album in the 80's ( i still have it ) and he used a 4003 and the sound was ace. 44. I have an AER Three. They have the most astonishing bottom ends of any compact amp bar none. I mainly run with Demeter into Bergs 2x12's and 4x10 but I have to say that the AER is my go to compact. It is the one I will take to any small venue. Bass or Eub in one hand Amp Three in the other. fits in the boot of a small car on the front seat. The pre amp and controls take some mastering but once you find 'your sound' it will be as good a sound as anything out there. Less crisp than the small marks, but the bass reproduction is out of this world. If you are using a P / EUB or micing a DB they are incredibly good. They require a bit of work to master control wise and many people don't get there. The Compressor is also really useful. I actually had 2 at one point and ran them a as a stereo pair but I just couldn't use the power. One is definitely loud enough. Every conceivable back panel out and feature - and of course stupidly high quality components and build. Those two 8" drivers kick like a mule but there is not as much brightness as an aggie, berg or mark small cab. You can wind plenty of treble in and its a sealed cab so it does respond well. It just doesn't have a horn for that very top pip.
